"New N.C. Laws Go Into Effect This Weekend
Inside the Legislature, General Assembly

Posted: Nov. 29 3:57 p.m.
Updated: Today at 9:33 a.m.

Raleigh — The start of December means dozens of North Carolina's new laws take effect, ranging from stiffer domestic violence penalties to banning school-bus drivers from using cell phones. The laws will:

* make it a misdemeanor, with a minimum $100 fine, for school-bus drivers who talk on the phone while driving
* make it harder for speeding motorists to get off with a lesser charge
* revoke the driver's license of someone who provides alcohol to a minor
* set rules so motorcyclists can go through a red light that won't turn green because the motorcycle is too light to trigger a sensor in the road
* create new felonies with which police can charge people who shoplift high-end merchandise or conspire to steal multiple times from a store with the intent to resell the goods
* make it a felony with possible prison time for someone who willfully kills a police or seeing-eye dog
* create a low-grade felony for anyone who vandalizes or defaces a grave marker, tombstone or other cemetery monument, no matter how small the damage
* prohibit alcohol inhalers, which use a mixture of vaporized alcohol and oxygen to put alcohol directly into the bloodstream
* make it easier to prosecute residential mortgage fraud by defining the practice and creating tougher punishments for repeat offenders
* make it a higher grade of misdemeanor to kill an animal through intentional starvation
* create an automobile "chop shop" law that makes it a felony for someone to disassemble a car that was illegally obtained or purchase one with an altered identification number
* order law enforcement to turn over copies of all crime investigation records to prosecutors so that they can be made available to defense lawyers
* make it a felony when abusers ordered by a judge to stay away from their victims have a weapon if they violate the order
* grant victims of trafficking temporary access to human services and legal aid even if they aren't legal state residents"

revoke the driver's license of someone who provides alcohol to a minor

makes sense, because driving is 100% coorelated to buying beer for underage people.

This is like taking someones hunting license because they were speeding.

bullshit - the punishment should fit the crime

if you are driving wrecklessly or under the influence, by all means taking and/or limiting driving priviledges is an apt punishment

but if you buying beer for someone underage, how in the fuck does that relate in any way to your driving ability or safety on the road?

maybe a fine or some community service related to alcohol abuse, but wtf

"revoke the driver's license of someone who provides alcohol to a minor"

By minor is this someone under the age of 18 or someone under the legal drinking age. If the later this is absolutely ridiculous. The current "War on Underaged Drinking" has to be one of the biggest waste of taxpayers money allowing police to use Gestapo techniques to harass the young adults (18-20 yrs old) over an issue that by itself has a minimal negative impact on society. If the former is the purpose, providing alcohol to people <18, i might be a little more understanding. Unless its a big brother why is a 21 yr old associating with high school aged kids. Either way it is pretty stupid to take away a drivers license b.c of this; whats next revoking my fishing permit b.c i get caught running a stop sign.

If i lose my license b.c the Gestapo ALE sees my handing a bud light to my 20 yr old friend at a football tailgate; I may be cut driving for non-essential stuff to lower the risk but I am sure not riding the fucking bus to my job everyday.

That is the most ignorant comment I have ever heard. Maybe we should question why some laws exist in the first place.

most of these are pretty reasonable... but one stands out in my mind. why the hell would the lawmakers create this law

Quote :
"create a low-grade felony for anyone who vandalizes or defaces a grave marker, tombstone or other cemetery monument, no matter how small the damage"

to protect tombstones, which are obviously sentimental... i mean they are a lot more expensive than they look, but there are already felony property damage laws to handle high dollar shit.

no big deal, i get why they do it. but how the hell is it a felony to kick over a tombstone and only a misdemeanor to keep an animal captive and starve it to death?? i wonder if its a financial decision after all

THIS makes me very very happy. First off, I knew a bunch of kids in high school who were serial shoplifters. They kept getting really lenient punishments because it was "just shoplifting" but never mind that they were worthless pieces of shit who really needed to get thrown in jail.
Then, after working at a book store and watching serial shoplifters that we couldn't do anything really about because of the way the laws are worded, and now they're going to get punished worse. VERY happy making.

And don't forget that if you're caught going 25mph+ over the speed limit, you can no longer get it dropped for improper equipment or use a prayer for judgement. I expect a shitton of threads in the next month or so.

^ Thats just gonna flood the court with people taking them to trial. Either that or the DA is going to reduce the charge to avoid having a yearlong backlog of people challenging their speeding tickets.

I am curious of how this will be interpreted. Let's say you are going 70 in a 55 . . . Is it going to effect the cop side of the ticket, where he will write you a ticket for 9 and under rather than 10 and over? Or the court side where the judge will lower your 10 and over ticket to 9 and under?

I can see the thing for a seeing eye dog, but if its a felony for a person to kill a police dog it should also be a felony for a cop to kill a persons dog.

B.c we all know the guy slapping his girlfriend or stealing a pair of jeans is not nearly
the menace of the college dude drinking a beer before kickoff of the college football game.

I thought that was only if they are of "pure enough blood"

and not citizens

and only while on reservations

iow, why should non-natives be "prohibited" from changing to native religions?

that is, if they changed, why wouldn't they be considered by law as full members?

you can change your religion to catholic and then drink wine underage, right?

in fact, you wouldn't even have to change, you could walk in during mass and get in line for it

legal [ceremonial] peyote being only for racially "pure" natives is really racist bullshit if you think about it

what other [extant] laws only give rights to pure members of a particular race?
