where should i look for one? my boss wants me to pick out a new desk that's not one of those cheap ones from target/office depot/etc, and has given me a 350$ max.

I don't know that you're going to be able to get a "good quality desk" for a max of $350, at least not new. Used maybe. In my experience, $350 will buy you basically a nicer version of the target/office depot/etc kind of desks. It will still probably come in a box and be put together with cam locks etc. but it might look a little nicer.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing...I'm still using one of that type of desk that I got from Best Buy for around $300 back in '99, and it's survived three moves which all required some amount of disassembly. Required a few additional braces after this last one, but it's still a quite functional piece of furniture.

If you want a solid wood desk for under $350...good luck with that.

If you are willing to go used, you could try the State Surplus Property agency. They often have crap, but sometimes you can find nice big solid wood desks. Last semester they had a bunch of desks out of the capital building. The desks that they do have, have set prices and you don't have to bid. The main office is over off of Chapel Hill Rd and there is also a branch office at State and at UNC. Duke also has a surplus property agency that sells that kinda furniture.

Used, yes, state surplus is a good option, and also you can find good furniture on craigslist with a little patience. Or, you can check out consignment furniture shops...I came really close to getting a HUGE solid oak desk at a consignment place this summer for $100, but someone got to it before I made my mind up. Great deals to be found there sometimes though.

A bit unusual to go used in a professional situation though. Not a bad idea, but uncommon.
