The common argument that crime is caused by poverty is a kind of slander on the poor.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubt.

Abortion may be a sin against god, but it's seriously not the government's job to enforce that sin.

They'd be better off having a bake sale outside the clinic trying to bring people to Jesus rather than making asses of themselves with a protest.

only thing i can think of is that since abortion (a evil horrific action rarely justified or needed) is only performed on women they could jack up the cost at will?

many of our laws are stem from religion though. The government already sets laws on rape, murder, adultery.

i wonder if it would be legal to shoot someone in the face, had it not been in the commandments.

is it not considered acceptable, in remote african tribes, to murder for reasons we consider frivilous?

"Taboo" is a relative term.

^ Yes, but believing that the ideas for basic human rights stem solely from religion is rather ridiculous.

You just said MURDER and RAPE were outlawed for religious reasons.

And... no, it wouldn't be legal to shoot someone in the face.

To deny that our laws aren't at least somewhat based on religion is asinine.

Hell, we still swear to tell the truth in court by putting a hand on the bible.

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong.

The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to be governed by men worse than themselves.

I remember back in the 60s, my dad had come back from Vietnam and was
going to school on the GI Bill. These hippies were rallying outside the university (can't remember
which one) and keeping the armie students from getting into one building for engineering classes.
One guy pushed my dad so he punched him and broke his nose.

That dude went on to be some big honcho in the 80s. My dad gave me his name (can't remember
that either, come to think of it) and I told my history teacher in high school about it, and of
course he didn't believe me.

my uncle fought in Vietnam and says that people's "memories" of being abused upon returning home from that unpopular war are a little fuzzy

he says there's more of Rambo than rememberance in those stories
