Yea that is a little excessive and I would imagine the gaps in the screens would get distracting.Anyway what game is he playing?
11/27/2007 10:10:54 AM
Quake III
11/27/2007 10:11:27 AM
quake 3
11/27/2007 10:11:31 AM
quake 3 from what I hear
11/27/2007 10:14:05 AM
im not sure but i think that is quake 3
11/27/2007 10:15:15 AM
Yea I am embarrassed. I never really got into that game and I should have known better!Anyway wouldn't you think it would be tough to play that way?Now with a game like Microsoft Flight Simulator or something that would be sweet.
11/27/2007 10:17:12 AM
11/27/2007 10:20:41 AM
I think I'd manage with that many..
11/27/2007 10:21:55 AM
It'd be really difficult to get used to I'd hate using my current setup ever again if I were allowed to use that for a day.
11/27/2007 10:24:59 AM
the question is what video cards are being used?
11/27/2007 10:50:06 AM
I hope he has a decent sound system because that would kinda suck to have two puny speakers.
11/27/2007 12:39:40 PM
^^
11/27/2007 12:52:48 PM
its quake 3
11/27/2007 12:57:32 PM
quake 3?
11/27/2007 1:03:36 PM
I hear it's Quake 3 that he's playing
11/27/2007 1:35:54 PM
speaking of flight sims. they had a pretty sweet setup when we tried out the flight sims that the navy uses for their training.
11/27/2007 1:38:16 PM
I really am curious how they connected that many monitors.. even using a shit ton of PCI video cards I can't think of any motherboard with enough slots
11/27/2007 1:43:21 PM
i remember the first thread i saw this inok now i dont but [old]
11/27/2007 1:44:26 PM
I bet he's playing on linux and has the game run on a grid/cluster. I see lots of wires, but no boxes
11/27/2007 1:48:17 PM
pci bridge
11/27/2007 2:18:27 PM
^^ no way he'd be getting 45 fps that way.a long time ago my dad had a server with 10 pci slots (back in the day they didn't have multiple network interfaces on single cards, so it wasn't uncommon for 4 or more of those slots to be occupied by NICs). there's got to be a mobo out there with 12. 12 dual-out cards would do it.

^ those range from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. seems like a lot to blow just to play q3.
11/27/2007 4:48:41 PM
If you have it, why not spend it?I mean, if someone's going to drop a cool 100k+ on a car, why NOT dump a lot into a nice rig?
11/27/2007 4:58:04 PM
I can't see playing Quake on that setup for anything other than the novelty. There's better and cheaper ways to get a jumbo sized display for gaming.More than likely it's just some guy boating off at work.
11/27/2007 5:59:20 PM
yeah, since it doesn't seem to be increasing the field of vision it's just a handicap
11/27/2007 6:15:04 PM
i'm 95% sure that's at the HCI lab at virginia tech. it's distributed rendering using chromium and distributed multihead x (dmx). it's actually running on 12 servers, 2 video out per server. with dmx, it's a resolution of 10240x3072.and actually, recently they've been working on a 50-display version (25 servers) for a combined resolution of 12800x5120.confirmed:http://infovis.cs.vt.edu/gigapixel/index.html[Edited on November 27, 2007 at 8:13 PM. 11/27/2007 8:19:33 PM
sweet
11/27/2007 8:20:09 PM
is that quake 3?
11/27/2007 8:42:14 PM
nope, it's battletoads
11/27/2007 8:56:14 PM
Quake 3
11/27/2007 9:54:46 PM
guys it looks a lot like quake III or perhaps quake III arena. as you can tell from the shadows and some of the pixels here, there is a lot of similarity between whats on the monitors and whats in this actual screenshot from the game:
11/27/2007 10:04:20 PM
i can see how you could mistake it for either quake III or quake III arena - since they're the same game, but it's definitely battletoads
11/27/2007 10:19:17 PM
it's quake3 arena.
11/27/2007 10:21:07 PM
no, it's battletoads
11/27/2007 10:25:07 PM
I'm not a big gamer, but that looks like Quake 3 to me.
11/27/2007 10:43:44 PM
I'm still saying it's Quake 3 ... I don't like to change my answers.
11/27/2007 11:20:51 PM
i saw a 50 monitor setup once.. let me get the linktis the shiznit
11/29/2007 10:36:15 PM
