For those of you in the know, I am looking for a puppy to give to my girlfriend for Christmas. Of course, she wants a small dog. She lives in an apartment so that is the biggest reason since she doesn't have the space needed for a large dog.

Do any of you know of any puppies for sale at the moment or due anytime soon in the Triangle area? I'll spend up to $500.

i check the spca quite often and it seems they mainly have medium-large breed dogs up for adoption. very rarely have i been in there and seen a small breed up for adoption.

the spca is where i got my dog from though about 2 years ago. she's been great. american staffordshire mix... she was the runt of the litter which may explain her size (only about 55lbs, but pure muscle) and i moved home recently while i finalize some things with a new house and she even gets along great with my sister's chihuaha.

$500 is pretty much the absolute max that i will go for. and that is definitely stretching it, but if the breed is worth it then i may have to drop that much.

looking for something in the free - $250 range. but the small breed dog's that she likes ain't too cheap.

Understand that dogs are not a good gift idea. A dog is a 10-20 year commitment that requires attention and hard work.

Good thing your girlfriend is not on this forum, because I'd strongly suggest that she kick your ass to the curb for shit like this.

Give a gift certificate to the local animal shelter.

That way SHE can pick out the dog. If she's not ready for a dog, then she can wait until she wants one. In a few months, there will be lots of Christmas puppies at the shelter for her to pick from. The other option is a gift certificate to a breed rescue.

wrap the certificate up with a leash, food bowls, and another gift certificate to a pet store so she can get some high quality food.

A $250 dog is going to be a HELL of a lot more expensive than one that costs a grand, because small dogs are prone to many very expensive health problems. this is why you get one that's slightly older at the shelter, you have a better idea of how healthy they will be.

Thankfully my boyfriend is not a douche, and realizes that my next pet will either be from the animal shelter, breed rescue, or a breeder of working dogs that have won national and international level competition and completed more health clearances than most people know exist.

ok so does anyone know of any puppies in the triangle that i can take a look at getting her? she will go with me to pick it out and my aunt is a vet so she will make sure the puppy is healthy before we make the final purchase. hopefully my aunt comes through with a litter or two like she does quite often since she works at the vet, but can't rely on that.

and i've tried petfinder. but the majority of those dogs are too big or too damn far away from where i live (cary).

since you have a dog already, i guess you know how much of a commitment they are. that's good! i highly recommend adopting from somewhere/someone instead of paying a lot, although with adoptions you will still probably pay a fee. anyways, here's what i found in about 15 minutes:

Keep in mind that free-$250-$500 is only the beginning. I rescued a kitten from the woods for "free" and just calculated his vet bills to date and I've spent $750 on regular first year exams, shots, and a neuter and declaw. That does not count the food, toys, and other care products. A dog is a HUGE commitment of time and money.

^Beagles are NOT a good suggestion for a young woman who lives in an apartment and wants a small dog. They are communal hunting dogs and do best in an atmosphere with someone who is home a lot and gives lots of mental stimulation. Plus they bray a lot and leave HUGE poops.

Small dogs are in high demand, so often they go fast at shelters, tell a few shelters what you're looking for so they can call you if one comes in.

I like the gift certificate idea.

Stay away from pet stores (puppy mills, overbred/inbreeding)

Johnston County SPCA had a bunch of smaller breed dogs/puppies last time I looked.
Visit the Wake County Animal Shelter (not the SPCA off Tryon)
the last few times i've been there they had quite a few smaller breed dogs/puppies. a purebred maltese, pomeranian, and rat terrier puppies. That shelter doesn't get as much attention as the SPCA and usually has A LOT more animals. worth taking a look.

small breeds are hard to find in shelters.

search there for breed rescues or through the AKC's list of breeders.

If you buy from a breeder, ask to see the parents, ask for references, their vets number (to call and ask about any chronic health problems with their dogs) etc... Too many people out there breed these smaller/toy/designer breeds without considering the genetics involved which results in adorable puppies they can sell for $$ but can have tons of health problems down the road.

this is a very good idea. i wouldn't want anybody else picking out my puppy, that's a huge part of the fun of getting a new dog!! it's not usually a good idea to surprise someone w/ a new pet. that's the first thing they tell you at any adoption agency or reputable breeder. if she's not ready, doesn't like the breed you pick, doesn't like the color you pick, doesn't like the temperament, you're screwed.

seriously, this is a horrible idea. please don't do it.

if my bf ever thought of doing this, i would hope that he wouldn't take the fun out of picking the puppy. why would you want to ruin it like that?

this is a pet, a 10-20 year commitment, not a scarf or a pair of shoes. you have to take this kind of shit more seriously (and responsibly).

websites can be deceiving. If you're interested in a puppy I'd go and visit them. ask to see where the puppies and other dogs are kept and raised. spend some time with the animals.
ensure that the parents are at least 2 years old before they were bred (most health problems don't surface until 2 years old). ask for vet references and proof that all animals are UTD on vaccines. ask for other references.

Hopefully the people care about the animals and are breeding healthy individuals rather than just breeding 2 toy/small breeds together to create a "designer small breed (mutt)" that they can make a huge profit on. I personally wouldn't pay $450 for a mutt. If you do pay that much I'd hope the puppy has received it's first round of vaccines and dewormer.

and about "surprising her"... it won't really be like that. we've gone dog searching several times together and i know exactly what she is looking for.

you don't think your gf would enjoy picking out a puppy? getting to see all the little puppies running around playing and being cute. getting to see the parents possibly to get an idea of what the puppy would be when it's older. have you thought about that at all?

He's just looking for ideas of breeders, etc. Talk to your vet office, they might keep a listing of people who are giving away a small dog (older people, child who is allergic, moving, etc.), they would also know people who are breeding dogs. How about a rescue group who works with small dogs?

I know its a bit of a drive, but this weekend at the martinsville, va spca they had the cutest beagle- boxer or shepard mix puppies. They were so adorable and VERY soft. All had a light tan skin with the brown hair on the face. SO cute.

thanks. i have a pit bull/am. staff/boxer mix and i really want to get another pup for her to play with, but i just dont have the space for two dogs that size.

i keep trying to convince my girlfriend to get a dog like that but she lives in an apartment and doesn't have space for a medium/large breed dog. and of course she wants a little ankle biter to start with.

definitely read up on breeds before making this big commitment. some small breeds tend to need more attention than others and be clingy to one owner. i have a havanese and he is always up under my feet and constantly has to be in my sight when i'm home. he's absolutely adorable, but a handful. i'm so thankful he is getting older now and getting out of this puppy phase.

he has been at the vet all morning getting checked out. he's good to go. 9 weeks old.

ended up finding him in the classifieds and luckily came from a very nice family who needed to sell their puppies because they just had newborn twins.

they have a female still for sale as far as i know.
