bad deal in my opinion...especially for only coming with xp
11/25/2007 9:22:50 PM
i dont want vista, havent heard anything good about it (unless you count "its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be" as good)
11/25/2007 9:25:21 PM
bad deal
11/25/2007 9:33:54 PM
yeah doesn't seem that great to me
11/25/2007 9:34:41 PM
bad deal"only coming with XP" is a pretty retarded comment, but it still isn't a great deal.
11/25/2007 9:53:00 PM
shit if i buy a laptop with xp it better be like less than 500, but thats just me[Edited on November 25, 2007 at 9:58 PM. Reason : honestly the laptop he posted should be about 400 after rebates...if that]
11/25/2007 9:57:27 PM
its better than my laptop and cheaper than what I paid for mine 2 years ago. So its not a ripoff or anything like that. I'd buy it if I was needing a laptop soon.
11/25/2007 10:25:46 PM
i thought it was a decent price....so where should i be looking to get a laptop w/ these specs at $400-500?
11/26/2007 12:13:24 AM
not very hot deal. Should get XP pro or media center instead of home. And fuck vista. I want my dx10 on XP!
11/26/2007 2:36:47 AM
i'd expect an 800 MHz FSB for that price, too.
11/26/2007 2:38:10 AM
for those saying "bad deal"... i defy you to find an 8600MGT card out there for cheaper...it's not a "bad deal", but at the same time it's not that good of a laptop, the processor will hold you back from doing anything serious on it, and coming with XP home is just kinda weird[Edited on November 26, 2007 at 7:42 AM. Reason : /]
11/26/2007 7:41:44 AM
its a tad bit higher than i would expect for that price but its still alright
11/26/2007 11:56:36 AM
so would you guys be more keen on it with 160 gb hard drive & a processor more closer to 1.8ghz/800mhz fsb/2mb cache at a price of around another $100?again, if it's not a decent price then please tell me where these cheap laptops w/ sweet specs are hiding at
11/26/2007 12:28:08 PM
since i dont want to clutter up tech talk with another 'decent price for a laptop thread', how about this:AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL58 1.9GHz/800Mhz FSB/1MB cache (meh on the cache)15.4" Anti-glare Widescreen2GB DDR2 SDRAM 533MHzATI Radeon Xpress1150 256MB video120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability Integrated AudioDell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps) Genuine Windows XP Professional$785 + taxmeh i guess not really that good looking back at it. I have a still decent desktop at the moment, my old laptop just died and im looking for something to bring with me out of town and use around the apartment when im not designing/gaming. So mainly aim, internet, basic use etc. Not sure I can justify spending more than 600 dollars for casual use :/
11/26/2007 1:23:27 PM
it's a good deal...one year ago
11/26/2007 1:42:55 PM
yea there were a few things i had to change that brought it up nearly 200 dollars (XP pro mainly) from what it was when i started my post (noticed when i got down to the OS) but i proceeded to post anyways heh.im mainly looking for something for casual use alongside my desktop i still use for gaming/design. but something that isnt going to take forever to boot up and open programs and will still be running ok down the road.then again i do have a 4 yr old thinkpad with nothing but a crashed harddrive wrong with it. not sure if its worth reviving tho with a new HD and OS

thats the exact model and deal i have right now...so far its been working pretty good
12/4/2007 9:44:15 PM
That sounds like the specs on the Dell Vostro line...I got one of those, and it's a really nice computer, though I caught mine on sale for a good bit cheaper than that.Ignore drunknloaded's posts about XP and the valuation at $400...it seems he's escaped from chit-chat. The XP option is a blessing and any noobs who will bitch about "omg lol XP home! ripoff!" don't realize that most of XP Pro's features will go untouched and sight-unseen by 90% of users. Unless you know the difference and know you need it, you don't need it. Vista...well, I wouldn't dream of running Vista on anything with such a slow processor. XP runs great, and I can attest to that. All in all, the processor is definitely lacking(it is 800mhz FSB though), the hard drive is slow, and the display isn't very high resolution. The base model Vostro 1500 with these exact specs can be had for as little as $599, and it's not a bad deal. $600 is a more reasonable estimate for what a system like this is worth. I will tell you from personal experience that you will be hard pressed to find a comparable mobile graphics adapter in a notebook at this price as well. I upgraded all the aforementioned lacking components on mine and came out a hair over $900. Not a bad deal at all, and I can say that with one in my hands, right now.

Gut feeling is that you could do better than a $700 (after shipping) refurbished laptop off ebay. I'd rather drop the $700 on a new laptop, at least you know what you are getting that way.[Edited on December 30, 2007 at 12:55 AM. Reason : -]

i should also mention that my little brother works for IBM, so I can get a discount through him. I can also order Dell and HP/Compaq through AAFES and get a small discount + tax free there (although I think only Dell allows you to order custom builds through AAFES).

damn. i can't seem to find any really killer deals on what i want.-Core 2 Duo w/ 2MB cache-2GB RAM-15.4" screen-Vista home premium-DVD-R or RW-Firewire (not a dealbreaker if the price is right...can go with a PC card when I need it)-PCMCIA and/or Expresscard slot-decent video and sound cards preferable (no serious gaming, although I wouldn't mind rocking out Call Of Duty 4 if my roommates don't get it for PS3). -integrated Bluetooth preferable, though not a deal breaker

not a bad deal, but you sure as hell will want the 9 cell battery. That gives me about 3.5 to 4 hrs of life doing average work and even some photoshop work. I always keep the screen at it's brightest, especially when doing image manipulation, so battery life could be a little better if you turn it down. A 4 cell battery would limit you to about 90 minutes with that processor/screen combo. If you are ordering from Dell, it is MUCH cheaper to get the battery upgrade and, if you want, a spare battery from the same ordering screens and not through the accessories section of their site.
