how can you even include chardonnay among shiraz (syrah) and merlot? If you want an inexpensive red, I suggest Francis Ford Coppola's Diamond Collection Syrah or Pinot Noir.

The best thing if your on a budget is to get the "Summerfield" wines from a wine shop (like Wine Merchant.) Their Merlot was $2.99 the last time I bought it and all the others range from $2.99 to $5.99. None of them have been "bad" yet.

It's the $4 wine that tastes like it cost $7.99.

Mix em all. I dont believe youve the palate to truely distinguish between the varietals and their respective regions.

A California Shiraz and going to taste a whole lot different that an Australian Shiraz, which is going to be different from about three different regions where Syrah is grown
