I want to move from Greensboro, NC to Durham NC. I got two couches, queen size bedroom set, king size bedroom set, dining room table with 4 chairs, and a couple of TVs.

About how much would a moving company charge me to move this stuff??

^ as long as it's a work related move i think that's true - i was told the same thing when i was moving and i think i recall looking it up

I am in Real Estate and have NEVER, i repeat, NEVER, heard anyone say they had a good experience with their movers. They always bitch, stuff gets broken, does not arrive on time, arrives early and they demand you pay for storage, they show up on time but then have to go downtown to the railroad tracks to "hire" people to help unload. I even had one that the mover guy showed up with the truck of stuff at dusk and went and found some kids (looked to be under 16) to help unload. The kids that were working had a bunch of younger kids carrying lamps and stuff in.

I mean I don't know that it's always the movers fault, but I guess what I am getting at is there is no reason to hire someone to do something that you can probably do yourself just as good or better. Unless you just have money to throw away try scrounging up some help and do the u-haul thing. It will probably just as much of a hassle as the movers. At least if you do that and some of your shit gets broken you won't feel like you paid someone else to break your shit.

I have a great idea: Use one of those POD companies. The ones that drop off a medium sized shipping container and let you take as long as you want to pack it up? That way you can pad your furniture, stack stuff how you want it, and you can keep your stuff locked up until it gets to your place, at which time you unload the container at your leisure.

I've liked the idea of those since they came out.

Getting a uhaul and a few friends to help is also a great idea.

i've used 2 men and a truck twice (in atlanta) and i have had good experiences with them both times. the last time i used them (in august), i had them move all my stuff from my old apartment, drive it to my new house, and unload it. there was a 2 hours minimum for their services, and it was around $115 an hour. it took them only 2 hours. to me it was worth it, because i am a smaller girl, i couldn't move any heavy stuff down my apartment stairs, and i had to move on a weekday, so my friends couldn't really help me. i don't think i would have asked them anyways because moving is the biggest pain in the ass and i didn't want to put them out....

it's deductable for the amount that isn't reimbursed back to you

Yeah, that's my point. You can't just deduct any move you make. It also has to be a certain distance.

I used Two Men and a Truck last time and was satisfied. They did however go downtown to "hire" an extra guy.

i've been moved by mordue moving company twice, both were a good experience.

however i will admit it was a corporate move which is paid 100% by the company and they send the best of the best since its a huge account

also, yes it has to be a work related move and a certain distance for it to be tax deductible but its worth looking into

moving sucks no matter which way you cut it. however its a great opportunity to find things you thought you lost & get rid of things you no longer use!

For piddly local crap I usually just get a U-Haul but for my last move I had too much to do on my own so I used a local company called "Movin on Movers".

It was a little pricey but they were professional, done quickly, and after it was all done I realized it was well worth the money. They finished the move in hours and it would have probably taken me a couple of days.

I used Upack.com to move an apartment's worth of stuff from (a suburb of) Indianapolis to here, cost me just under $400. I had to load the trailer @ their terminal in Muncie, IN and then unload it like 3 days later @ their terminal in durham. they do provide a door to door service but it would've been somethin like 3x the amount.
