I actually got the thread idea from you elkaybie, where jlanca says he coulda phrased that question better, I just assumed he asked you to marry him but you were sleepy so you grunted.

So that's good news.

Dude

Matt keeps saying things like
"Hurry up and graduate so we can get married" (this sentiment is starting to get old)
"Marriage is just a formality at this point"
"Hurry up and graduate so we can get married. I want to have kids"

You know, I tried real hard for that whole "the one" thing, thinking that was the right way to go about it. It was not.

Now I'm pretty sure I just need to fuck things. Well, female-people-things. And as far as the religion aspect, I'll just do like whichever Saint that was who said, "Yo Jesus, make me a good guy and shit...but do it in like ten years. kthx."

In retrospect, I think I had a shadow of doubt about my wife being "the one" before we got married. In fact, I personally believe that each of us can fall in love with not just "the one" but a choice from a somewhat broader spectrum...and it's not written in stone. A good relationship takes time and peace of mind to grow.

All that said, there was pretty damn good evidence to suggest that I should have bailed out of that one before we said "I do." But I pretty much ignored it, only to have to come to terms with it later.

Moral of the story: TAKE A GOOD HARD OBJECTIVE LOOK AT WHO YOU'RE WITH BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE IT PERMANENT.

I thought he was until he started saying stuff like "I dont want a serious relationship" and "I like you but I don't love you" ... after we'd been together a year.

I'm still with him tho, since it takes years for him to "let someone in".... and he helps pay my mortgage and cleans and I get sex and he cooks once in a while...

lol zxappeal what big red sirens did you have?

Our relationship isn't perfect but we damn well love eachother and put the effort in to make eachother happy.

I don't want to get married anytime soon, I just want to know you're at least somewhat committed to me long term.

No, they aren't.

I don't want to get married until I have a degree because I want to be able to support myself. I mean it's no fun being married and still having mom and dad paying for things. Therefore when I get married I want to be in my career and have the moola.

I was fortunate. We didn't really have any mutual assets, and thank god we didn't buy a house (I'd been wanting to).

Bottom line...though I paid her post-separation support for a year, I had plenty of documented evidence that would have absolved me of most, if not all, financial liability. It took a while to come to terms with the fact that, although she couldn't take care of herself worth a damn, those were her decisions and she brought it on herself. I suppose deep down I was just waiting for the axe to fall. And it did.

I'll say it again...feelings will fuck you if you let 'em. Choose carefully and wisely.

She was way too much the rock-n-roller...and even though she had a child, she still wanted to live the party life that she always had...which included getting stoned frequently with her best friend (a very obese, creepy guy 15 years older than her)...a move that almost got her raped. She came from a broken family, and has a mother and a half sister with well-documented mental issues. I thought she was the sanest one of the bunch (her father is a great guy, intelligent and well-rounded; he joked with me about the first marriage being for practice), but she was just the best at hiding it.

My mom told me once (and it shocked the hell outta me; meet my moms and you'll understand)..."Dan...you're thinking with the wrong head." She had a point. Great sex does not a relationship make.

hoping to wife her soon, but its probably gonna be a while. She wants to finish graduate school and be in the working world for a while before doing the deed.

I think its more expensive not being married. Mostly because we aren't living together.

Technically not until we separated, or so she says. But she left me for this other dude, who turned out to be a total dud. The grass was greener, but all it was was some cheap-ass spray paint. True color was shit-brown.

BTW, I trust her about as far as I could throw her with two car batteries tied to each leg.
