OK, making this short - was trying to put pants on the kid and he jumped up & rammed his head into my throat at full force. I am a little sore but keep feeling like I have postnasal drip. No red visible at top of throat, not any more hoarse than usual, no airway problems. I've had ice on it since it happened (about an hour ago).

Is this something that requires an ER visit, or am I okay monitoring it overnight? I've been reading some scary shit on the intarweb, but not sure how much of it applies. The draining feeling scares me more than anything else - I do have some nasal drainage but not as much as I'm feeling.

TIA.

yeah, just got off phone with the nurse line, she got me to cough but no blood, so she said to watch & wait...

anyway - for something tww should be able to answer without bunching any panties - is student health equipped to deal with an injury like this, or will they send me off to urgent care/er? going to check it out in the morning if it doesn't escalate tonight.

Depends. If you're not having any symptoms really, then there may not be any workup indicated.

If there are signs of tracheal damage, you'd need imaging or maybe laryngoscopy/bronchoscopy, probably done by an ENT. Doubt you could get that done at student health, but they could at least point you in the right direction.

Student Health, in my experience, has a good track record with getting you appointments ASAP with specialists if your problem requires one.

As long as you're not coughing up blood, you're fine. I took a slapshot to the throat a few months back and felt sore for a day or so, but there was no blood so I just let it go and it cleared up with no trouble.

other than the hyoid bone, there's only soft tissue and cartilage in the front part of your neck...but i would think you could still bruise your trachea and/or have injured one of the C rings in that type of injury.

/no idea what im talking about, go see a doc

student health, in my experience, has a good track record with diagnosing you with mono, pregnancy or both. even if your left arm is missing and blood is squirting into their faces, you have mono.

just for the record, student health did correctly send me to an ENT and a neurologist, which lead to my eventual appointment at UNC hospitals and diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (rare autoimmune disorder). i had trouble swallowing food (it would go up into my sinuses instead of down my throat) and they saw that the "architecture of my throat" was normal. they said the swallowing problem was not normal, asked if i had other symptoms like drooping eyes and double vision, which i didn't realize until later were characteristic of MG, and got me an appt with the ENT that week. i was diagnosed in about 3 months, versus the normal 3-7 years it takes other people with MG to get a diagnosis.

score 1 for student health
