AHA, another moment to mention my genius mother...

She buys relevant and interesting lectures to listen to on the way to and from work. When she's done listening with her genius ears, she shares them with friends and family...

I currently have the sets of History of the English Language and the History of Christianity sitting in the backseat of my car.

By osmosis, I'm so much more informed than all you fuckers.

I've been listening to NPR since high scool. I played it every evening when I picked up my siblings from middle school, so that by the time they went to high school, they could pretty much name every host and regular reporter on the show.

I used to think that NPR was the evil domain of latte sipping, self-important, metropolitan, left wing fruits.

I mean I still do, but the reporting is far better than anything else out there.

I'm a total NPR homer. 88.1 and 91.5 are the only stations that I have programmed in the car

They (NPR) did a piece on us when we paddled down the Mississippi River that ended up on Morning Edition. That started off all kinds of media contacts for us, and for that, I'll be forever grateful. I can trace a hell of alot of what I plan to be doing over the next couple of years back to that interview.

Car Talk is terrible and only encourages clueless yuppie dumbasses to screw with their cars. Diane Reams has a voice for print and the callers usually make me want to gouge my eyes out. A Prairie Home Companion and Wait Wait both suck enormous amounts of cock so weekends on NPR are basically useless.

The Story is decent. Back Porch Music and the Thistle and Shamrock are excellent...when they're not begging for money, of course.

I've really gotten back into This American Life again lately. Dude does a great job of producing those clips. I've love to take a bunch of our audio from the Mississippi trip and piece something together like that, but that would take talent

I am still pissed about them sticking On the Media in the basement of 6am Saturday mornings. Thank goodness for podcasts. Also, you guys should check out Radio Lab. Sadly, WUNC doesn't carry their show but you can listen to all of them on their site. Science Friday is also wonderful.

^^^ Radio Lab is awesome.
This American Life plugged them a few months ago by taking a Radio Lab story as one "act". After that, I subscribed to the Podcast and have listened to them all. It's really, really good. They say it's on a limited run anyway, though. They are in their 3rd season I think, but they already have plans to stop at some point.

you can listen to them right on their site, or subscribe to the podcast
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/

i would describe it as kind of like This American Life (which i also really like), but not so sappy and without all the nasally hipsters. They take a theme or idea every week, like "Time" or "Morality" or "Space" and explore stories and interviews on that topic, but it's not like TAL where they get abstract in their story telling - they actually dig into a lot of science topics and talk to physicists and stuff.

I intend to finish my degree within the next few years. Then maybe keep going to school. Or maybe move into my parent's basement and work full-time as a volunteer. Or move up to the family orchard and volunteer in the community while doing some repairs on the main house. Or squat in an abandoned trailer at the beach or something.

Anything but get a job.

"YOUNGSTOWN, OH—Jason Baumer, a fancy little gent who is apparently too good to enjoy a regular cup of coffee, drank a cup of tea Sunday.
Enlarge Image Fancy Man

The fancy man rests a placemat beneath the precious tea to protect his beautiful table from any errant drips.

The 29-year-old web designer prepared and consumed his precious tea, which is imported from some la-di-da foreign country, at about 10:30 a.m with the loving attention of a brittle, shawl-wearing spinster.

"I normally have some Earl Grey in the morning," said Baumer, referring to a kind of tea named after a guy who used to run around England in a powdered wig and fruity tights. "Sometimes I have toast [and jam] too. Or just a bowl of cereal when I'm in a rush."

Instead of simply heating a mug of water in the microwave, Baumer used a hoity-toity copper-bottomed tea kettle, which His Lordship reportedly purchased at Pier One Imports in 2003 for the express purpose of tea-making.

Baumer's beverage is made with the use of a tea bag, a prissy little package of delicately scented, finely shredded leaves wrapped in a thin gauze and festooned with a bright yellow label tied to a string so that the user need not scald her tender digits in the hot water. Baumer, like all the other hens and dandies known to enjoy tea, must "steep" the drink, which is a term for gently lowering the bag into a teacup holding the hot water.

On this occasion, Baumer removed the tea bag from the dainty brew and added one dollop of honey made by his friends the honeybees and a splash of milk straight from his mama's precious teat. But even with these additions, the tea was still too hot for Princess Jason's sensitive mouth, causing him to softly blow on the beverage with his lips pursed together like a little rosebud.

"I like to do the crossword puzzle while I have my tea," said Baumer, making it easy to imagine him wearing a bonnet and a frilly pink dress. "Or listen to the radio."

Our precious baby Baumer makes nearly daily use of his fragile porcelain teacup, which he balances between feeble thumb and forefinger to drink his beverage with prim sips. He often places the cup on a special little plate that goes with the cup.

Baumer reportedly loves his tea so much that he knows about all the different kinds. He admitted to drinking a special type of tea at night called "chamomile," which is made out of pretty flowers. According to Baumer, the caffeine in regular tea robs him of his treasured beauty sleep if he drinks it too late in the day.

Those close to the tea-sipper have known about Baumer's refined predilection for hot beverages for years, but shockingly have not ostracized him for it.

"We sometimes have tea when we read the Sunday paper in bed," said Baumer's girlfriend, Laurel Altman, who would not comment on whether Baumer also stages tea parties with an assortment of dolls and teddy bears.

Baumer, as wrapped up as he was in his special soothing drink for old maids, was nevertheless able to make it out to a local park later that morning in order to "enjoy the nice weather before it gets too cold." "

"Where The Fuck Is Diane With My Fair-Trade Coffee?
BY BEN LESTERMAN
JULY 28, 2004 | ISSUE 40•30

Marla? Get in here. Where the fuck is Diane with my coffee? I sent her out 15 minutes ago for a large cup of fair-trade Ethiopian Dark Roast from the La Paz coffee shop. How hard could it be? You walk your ass to the corner, hand them my Utne Reader travel mug, plunk down the money, and pick up the coffee. Add a little soy milk and two natural-cane sugar packets, and you make sure the lid is tight. That's so simple, even Diane should be able to do it without fucking up.

Have a seat, Marla. We need to talk about the situation here. I don't ask for much, do I? All I need are a few comforts to make my workday start smoothly. You know this. When I walk into this office at 8 a.m., I'd better see these things on my desk: The New York Times, for a fair analysis of current events; the trades, to keep up with the competition; and, most importantly, my fucking coffee.

I want my staff working at 110 percent, and I want my coffee harvested by formerly indigent people making a decent living wage so they can feed their families, sustain their farms, and become sources for community development at a local level. What part of that is confusing? Let me repeat myself: I want a large cup of organochlorine-free, unbleached-filter-brewed, environmentally sound cocksucking coffee 10 minutes ago.

Christ, what's she doing? Flying to Ethiopia to purchase the beans from local farmers at a minimum price of $1.26 per pound herself? I'm glad someone is providing those farmers with technical assistance transitioning to organic farming methods, but that's not Diane's job. If I remember correctly, she works for me. And I need to be able to talk to our clients in a positive frame of mind. No one wants to talk about ecologically sensible office supplies with someone who can't keep his fucking eyes open. I do not need this shit when my acupuncturist is out of town.

And what's up with this radio station? It's sure as fuck not NPR. "Smooth jazz"? It may be smooth, but it's not jazz. If you want to listen to jazz, there's a great Coltrane retrospective on today. Or do you have something against expanding your fucking minds? You'd rather sit around like monkeys, listening to smooth jazz.

Do you even care what kind of shit is going down in the world? It's called Morning Edition. If I don't get some Carl fucking Kasell right now, I'm going to choke someone. Hold on. Change it right after this Terence Trent D'Arby song is done. I like this one.

And what was that stack of bills sitting in my mailbox this morning? Marla, do you think I have my home mail sent to my work address so I can open it in the conference room while gazing out at the swans? Marla? Do you care to venture a guess? Well, Marla, I will tell you: I have my personal mail sent here so that my personal assistant can personally assist me by fucking opening it. Get rid of this REI catalog. Get rid of this shit. Now, look at this Working Assets Long Distance bill. It hasn't been paid. What's the date on that Maya Angelou calendar? Look at the calendar, Marla. Do you even care about the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act that I help support every time I call my brother in Seattle? Then let's get on the stick! Here, put this Ben & Jerry's coupon in my canvas tote over there.

Another thing: No one even touches the Mother Jones until it moves from my desk to the table in the waiting room. Last week, I was trying to find my goddamn Mother Jones, and where was it? Sitting on the toilet tank in the men's room. I had to have Diane run all the way out to the newsstand and buy me a brand-new copy that wasn't covered in particles of shit and piss.

After I'm done reading the Mother Jones, you can do whatever you the fuck you want with it—before you recycle it, that is.

Next item on the agenda: Thursday, I put some organic radishes in the refrigerator, and on Friday, they were gone. As if that weren't enough, yesterday someone tossed a salmon wrap and half a Fresh Samantha's Mango Mama. Are you aware that there are people starving in Brunei Darussalam? You don't throw out stuff that isn't yours. It's just common sense, or didn't they teach you that in school?

Remember that we're all in this together. We all have the same mission: bleach-free 40 percent post-consumer recycled bond in every copier in America. If we can't agree on that, then what are we doing here? I'm not asking, I'm telling: Think globally, get your fucking act together.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to call the shop about my Volvo. "

yeah, i know. They are so accurate with their satire and parody in so many ways. Some of them are so relevant to a particular time, too. I like this one, from June 2007. If you read this now, it might be hard to figure out what he's talking about, or if you read it in 2 years, it will be completely irrelevant, but reading it in June 2007, anyone in the US would know what it was referring to
