I'm going to rent a scary movie to watch tonight. I want some ideas for some really scary movies. I'm trying to stay away from movies that just have a few "jump" scenes and that's it. I want something genuinely scary and thrilling. The newspaper has some suggestions today..They suggested "The Descent", "The Shining" and "28 Days Later" are any of those movies scary? Any other suggestions?

I thought 28 days later was pretty good. Definitely leaves that unsettling movie "aftertaste" that all is not quite so well. Or maybe it depends on which ending as I think there were multiple ones.

i still haven't seen saw or any of those... are those "scary"?What about "The Hitcher"
10/26/2007 4:29:24 PM
The old one with Rutger Hauer was good. The new one with Sean Bean? Not so much.

I just watched the Audition.

can't lose with "The Shining". also, if you like sort of a sci-fi bent then "Event Horizon" freaked me out. also, "A House on Haunted Hill" wasn't too bad, the remake that is. i saw it in theater though so that may have helped things, never saw the original. stay away from those rob zombie movies, pure crap IMO.

I liked "The Wicker Man". The ending made was a w-t-f moment. And I fully understand that I am in the vast minority on this but "The Grudge" continues to scare me.Oh yeah, and the obligatory "Jesus Camp". [Edited on October 27, 2007 at 3:11 AM. Reason : .]

Ended up renting 28 days later. It wasn't scary, just weird at parts...I want a slasher, killer-type scary movie.

yea, 28 days later focuses more on the people and the emotional side of a zombie movie, whereas dawn of the dead is zombies eating people and people shooting zombies.i prefer 28 days later as a movie, but if i'm lookin for somethin scary, i'd definitely go with dawn of the dead. 28 days later, at best, is creepy in a few spots.[Edited on October 27, 2007 at 11:40 AM. there really aren't any scary movies anymore, don't get me wrong there are plenty of gore movies out there but nothing really scary. but hey what do i know.

I wasn't suggesting them, as i haven't seen them. I also fell asleep during Day of the Dead last night.

I liked the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It didn’t have a whole lot of plot, but its something that you believe really could happen. I mean what are the chances or aliens, or magical undead, vs the chances of a crazy guy?Believability is key for a movie to have any fearful aspect, I mean don’t get me wrong, I enjoy being entertained by most “scary” movies, but I just don’t think a werewolf or vampire is going to bite me anywhere other than facebook.

The Shining, Exorcist III

Audition was a joke. I don't believe anyone who tells me that it was scary or disturbing.

If you are looking for a truly creepy and scary movie, I suggest Poltergeist. That shit will freak you out. And if you ever see a TV on with just static again, it will make you wanna turn it off.

Event Horizonseconded. very underappreciated Sam Neil movie. Another one I like is 'in the mouth of madness'

I also second the new Texas Chainsaw massacre if you're looking for a newer movie.Other than that and a few rare others, you really have to go back 10 years or more to find a good scary movie. Like The Shining, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, etc.
