so i was sitting, thinking like "you never hear about the king, you only hear queen elizabeth II....so i'm like ok maybe i'll check wiki and see when the king diedwell it turns out the queen is married to a prince....why wouldnt the person she be married to be refered to as the king?
10/25/2007 3:40:26 PM

10/25/2007 3:41:38 PM

10/25/2007 3:42:01 PM
10/25/2007 3:42:55 PM
^^^^prince phillip is her husband
10/25/2007 3:44:14 PM
Royalty can only marry other Royalty. If she marries a prince, so be it.
10/25/2007 3:47:18 PM
so when does england get a new king?
10/25/2007 3:47:22 PM
^Whenever Elizabeth II dies, Charles' eldest son (William or Harry... can't remember which one is older)
10/25/2007 3:48:54 PM
^wouldnt charles become king before his sons?
10/25/2007 3:50:39 PM

b/c that's the way the British Monarchy works...if you're a man and you marry the female heir, you've got some power but you will never be titled King.however, if a woman marries the heir to king, she becomes Queen.isn't that fancy?but he got all the fancy British Monarch titles like Duke, Earl, Prince and dropped his Greek title when he married her.[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 3:53 PM. royalty has to marry royalty???[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 3:54 PM. Reason : ]
10/25/2007 3:54:01 PM
since the bloodline goes through Elizabeth II, her husband can not be king of england thus possessing more power than elizabeth. As far as Charles goes if Elizabeth II lives as long as her mother than a good chance says that Charles might not live long enough to be king. Even if he does; b.c of all the drama around him and his horse wife they may not allow him to be king in favor of Prince William
10/25/2007 3:54:34 PM
^oh ok[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 3:55 PM. Reason : man that sucks for prince charles]
10/25/2007 3:54:54 PM
So yeah, on the Prince consort thing...he's like the Prince Harry of the princes (unless William dies first)...so he couldn't have ever been a King anyway.^No, Charles is in line first...then William...then Harry.
10/25/2007 3:55:07 PM
i wonder what kind of cool shit william will be able to do once he's king.

so just to clarify on a few things...if elizabeth dies, charles is kingif charles dies before elizabeth, william is kingif elizabeth dies before charles, they might skip charles and make william king anyway?
10/25/2007 4:02:28 PM
^^the monarch can give their spouse the lifetime title of Queen (or King) Consort, but the title dies with them--they will never under any circumstances become the monarch
10/25/2007 4:02:44 PM
that's what I meant by it...but only females can get the title of queen marrying into the royal family, men can't.
10/25/2007 4:04:26 PM
Diana, while not royalty, wasn't remotely a commoner. Her father was the 8th Earl of Spencer.
10/25/2007 4:04:46 PM
princess diana although not royalty was a member of the english aristocratic class and of noble blood. I am sure grandma Elizabeth would not be very pleased if harry or William married a commoner although not law prohibits it.A lot of controversy around Prince Charles marriage besides the affair while with Diana was his new wife's lower class background. This is why Charles did not marry her originally. If you are crown prince you marry into a marriage of diplomatic value and have your mistresses on the side.
10/25/2007 4:05:43 PM
ok what if william has a kid, and then he dies...does it go to his kid or to harry?
10/25/2007 4:07:00 PM
10/25/2007 4:07:13 PM
his kid if he's 18..
10/25/2007 4:07:15 PM
William's son upon reaching maturity (18).Back when the monarchy actually had power; an uncle like Harry w/ approval from parliament would have acted as regent lord until William's son was old enough to take power.Regardless of the US's anti-monarchy attitude before the modern era; monarchy's passed down through the family actually supported government stability a lot of the time. Of course you always gambled on the attitude, intelligence, and benevolence of the monarch coming to power. You just have to look at the latter years of the roman empire to see how the lack of clear succession to the head of state cause a massive power struggle and instability within the nation.[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 4:11 PM. ^^^ The king is considered ascendant over the queen, thus if the heir is a queen, her husband can't be king or he'd rule the country which is not his blood-right. However, when a woman marries a king, she becomes queen and is still not the monarch. When the king dies, she becomes the "queen mother" while the next in the blood-line ascends to the throne.
10/25/2007 4:09:46 PM
ok what if william has a kid(thats 18+), and harry has a kid thats 18+and william dies(so it goes to his son), and then harry dies...and THEN williams son dies...does it go to harrys kid after that?
10/25/2007 4:10:12 PM
if he's next in line, yeh. but it would go to a daughter of william's if she exists.[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 4:12 PM. Reason : a]

anyone catch what amber1 had?ok just for a worst case scenario type of thing...what if queen, prince phillip, all the queens sons, william and harry are in a plane crash and die...what would happen then?
10/25/2007 4:27:13 PM
I would rail princess Beatrix and gladly be prince consort
10/25/2007 4:28:08 PM
^^princess margaret
10/25/2007 4:29:31 PM
^ Dude, she's totally dead.Argh. Wait, just look at the succession chart. The Queen's daughter Anne would still be alive, yes? And also Andrew's children? My guess is that Beatrice would be next, if you're just assuming the Queen's sons die.[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 4:32 PM. Reason : .]
