My xbox 360 just crapped out and got the 3 red lights in the ring o' light and now I can't do anything with it. Anyone know a way to fix it? I tried wrapping it in towels and leaving it on for 15 and that worked twice but it won't anymore.(weird huh?)

wtf?
10/21/2007 8:54:20 AM
i usually just turn it off for a few seconds and try again
10/21/2007 10:57:13 AM
umm send it in

it depends on what is actually wrong with your xbox. there is a way to get an error code from it that'll tell you what is wrong with it, then you know what to fix. google it.

there are different problems depending on which sections are lit up. If it's the "red ring of death" (i think it's quadrants 1,2, and 3), that is covered for 3 years after purchase. So just call them and send it in.http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/support/petermooreletter.htm

re-seat the heatsinks on the GPUor ya know, send it in.

There is a tutorial online on how to take it apart and fix it. It involves replacing the x-clamps (or something like that) to prevent the motherboard from flexing, which is what happens when it gets too hot. Search around on google and you will find it.
10/21/2007 10:19:15 PM
IF IT IS UNDER WARRANTY (I.E. IF YOU'VE NEVER TAKEN IT APART) SEND IT IN.AS SOMEONE WHO HAS DONE THE X-CLAMP FIX AND CURRENTLY HAS IT DISASSEMBLED AND IN HIS LIVING ROOMSEND IT BACK TO MICROSOFT IF IT IS UNDER WARRANTY (AND IT IS UNLESS YOU HAVE TAKEN IT APART)

Mine died a few weeks ago...I sent it in and got a brand new box (not refurb) Manufacturer's date was like a week before mine died. Sadly it does not have the hdmi output. I would definitely just send it in and get a brand new one. I am hoping my new one has the improved thermal system and won't die again.

granted I don't have a 360 and don't know anything about what problems plague it, but how in the world would overheating expensive electronics fix anything? that's been a great way to break things in my past experiences

Send it in for warranty service. It takes about 3-5 days for them to send you the prepaid package. You box it up and drop it off at a UPS Store and it should be back to you in 2 weeks or so.

Kinda like back in the 80's when if your computer stopped working and it overheated you were supposed to pick it up and drop it a few inches to reseat the chips

trepanation helps. true story.

If you need it working for a bit, you can google the 'xbox towel' fix. There are plenty of youtube videos that say this works well (for a temporary period). But as others stated, dont do anything too stupid. its covered under warranty.

the problem is that when the red lights show, that means it can't read the discthe new dvd drives in the boxes require a "groove" to guide the laser, and so you will probably need to take some abrasive (sandpaper works) and create circular "grooves" around all of your games (like you would wipe it with a paper towel or something, but use the sandpaper) You might have to do this a few times to get it right, but once the laser finds the path, the red rings go away and you can play worry free.Took me a few tries to get it right, but i haven't had a problem since! While one game is reading (you'll see the red rings for about 5 minutes while it's searching for groove), you can save time by fixing your other games as well while you're waiting

What? The 3 part "red ring of death" issue that most people have has absolutely nothing to do with the DVD drive.

i fixed it wit the "hot gun fix" once but that only failed after about a week.then i resoldered the GPU and everything has been fine since. also, keep the powerbrick off the ground/somewhere warm.when i get home i'll help you in more detail. this problem is a bitch to have, i'll work you through it.
11/5/2007 7:55:14 PM
What is one looking for when needing to resolder the GPU? I think mine is at the point where that needs to be done now.
11/5/2007 9:52:16 PM
you don't

Squirt some starting fluid through the vent holes, then plug it in. The quick burst of flames will reseat those chips like new. Incidentally this is also a great way to make tractor tires clench the rims.Or try the sandpaper, that's bound to help too.Hahaha (a fluid trail on the ground like a fuse would have saved this guy his eyebrows)http://youtube.com/watch?v=T_6qV50NFgY"...now put it out!"http://youtube.com/watch?v=bAbuVE_mAJM[Edited on November 5, 2007 at 11:00 PM. jokes aside, why didn't you send it back to ms?you know those are covered for 3 years after purchase if it's a RRoD problem, right?or do what half the other people on here do...buy one from walmart, switch them, then take it back
11/6/2007 1:46:56 PM
