i have this running bet with my friend...everytime I refer to the US as "America" he corrects me and says America is a contentinent which includes North and South America. I tell him he's wrong, that's Americas.and that "America" is what people refer to as the US.so who's right/wrong
10/19/2007 6:10:39 PM
since we're the best country in the "americas" we can call ourselves americansand also united statesman sounds stupid]
10/19/2007 6:11:55 PM
can yall both be wrong?
10/19/2007 6:12:01 PM
consult my penis... i find he is always right
10/19/2007 6:12:08 PM
The US of what?AMERICA! MOTHER FUCKER!
10/19/2007 6:12:09 PM
When a person says they are American, no one assumes they are anything other than a USAer.
10/19/2007 6:17:26 PM
so basically what i am saying is can we say "we live in america" or he/she is from "america"b/c he is saying that is incorrect.....b/c america is a continentor do i need to say the "United states of America"
10/19/2007 6:19:16 PM
oh and give me proof to prove him wrong too
10/19/2007 6:20:31 PM
I don't understand your question....give us an example of a statement that you feel is correct, and one that he feels is correct.
10/19/2007 6:21:43 PM

10/19/2007 6:22:33 PM

10/19/2007 6:22:51 PM
He thinks it's US and feels that its incorrect to say america.[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 6:23 PM. Reason : .]

US citizens are arrogant to think that America only refers to this country. "America" (actually I think it was Americanus) was the name given to the "New World" centuries ago, which would encompass both North and South America. That said, in the US "America" is generally interpreted as referring to this country. I agree that technically we shouldn't refer to this country as America and a distinction should be (but isn't) made between "America" and "The United States (of America)".I am an American, but so are Hugo Cháves and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. I reefer to US citizens as exactly that: US citizens.]
10/19/2007 6:23:55 PM
me: "Ask her to come visit America".him: "No, You mean the United States of America. America itself is a continent that consists of North and South."me: "Whatever you anal bastard".
10/19/2007 6:24:32 PM
does he call people from the PRC Chinese?
10/19/2007 6:25:29 PM
^^ best explanation so far...yeah I'm not debating what we call ourselves, i.e. "the people that live here". I am debating "the location".I agree that Americas refers to the continent, North and South. But I always thought "America" = "US"[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 6:27 PM. Reason : k]
10/19/2007 6:25:44 PM
He's probably just some mexican/canadian that's all gung ho about that "North American Union" bs.
10/19/2007 6:26:53 PM
^ ha...actually he's chinese, but grew up in Colombia and speaks Spanish, and lived the latter half of his life in Canada. I had also attributed his analness to this.
10/19/2007 6:28:29 PM
10/19/2007 6:30:23 PM
10/19/2007 6:30:38 PM
ok, I missed that somehow.Yes, we can say we live in America and it is assumed we're talking about the USA. A person who lives in Canada doesn't say they're American. A person in Mexico might, say it, but we all know why that is

So Eddie must have been confused too when he got here.
10/19/2007 6:37:07 PM
america is to america as kelvin is to kelvin; america is a unit of america. i am an american, not united statesman...[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 6:37 PM. Reason : g]

10/19/2007 6:38:11 PM
