I'm considering upgrading from my Canon Powershot G2 to a more professional, SLR model. Yes, I've been drawn into the Canon vs. Nikon whirlpool, and I'm not sure I'm going to find my way out anytime soon!

Part of me says that I should just get what I want, sans cost. I was looking at the D200 (since I've handled one a bit in the past) however I wanted to know if it is really worth the extra money (from the D80...I suppose that the next level down...or any other model, for that). I also looked at the RebelXTi...but basically I can't make my mind up.

Whilst I'm dealing with my indecisiveness, it occurred to me how much I value the "point-and-shoot" option of my G2 (as well as the rotating LCD screen). The SLR's are bulky and quite frankly I wouldn't be carrying them to half the places I haul my G2.

SO, enter my question:

For those of you using the more professional D-SLRs, do you also have a "secondary" camera? A less expensive (and smaller) model that you can throw in your pocket, around your neck, or in your purse to carry along to ensure you really do grab EVERY "Kodak moment"? Or, do you really just take your SLR everywhere you go?

If you do have a second camera, what kind is it? If you don't, what are your opinions on the Nikon/Canon issue (I know this has been done elsewhere...but I'm specifically asking about the D80/D200/RebelXTi, or any other model you would suggest in their place).

For a secondary camera, look at the Canon Powershot SD800IS and SD870IS. Both have wide-angle zoom (28-105mm I think) which isn't terribly common for a pocket-size camera, image stabilization, plus the usual virtues of the SD line (very small, stylish, sensible menu layout, well built). The SD700IS has it also and had higher-rated image quality (at least according to dpreview.com), but it has been out of production for a while (I actually think the 800 is also out of production but it's still easy enough to find).

i just bought the new Olympus 790 point and shoot for throwing in my purse, and i use my brothers canon SLR and Sony HD handycam for more detailed stuff.

I LOVE this camera, it was worth every penny of the 299. its tiny and fairly thin, shockproof, waterproof up to 10'. Its great for just using for everyday and the pictures come out really nice imo.

as for a small camera, I'd get something like the Nikon Coolpix L11...we've got it at Wolf Camera right now for $120. It does videos too. It's small enough to tuck in your purse, and at that price, you're not going to be out much money if you bust it.

Canon/Nikon....whatever, they're both good, just don't go with Sony/Minolta/Pentax. I wouldn't get the D200, though because the D300 is coming out within a month. For the DSLRs, spend your $$$ on a good lens and you won't regret it. The primary lens I use costs more than entry-level DSLRs, and it's totally worth it.

I've got a Canon XTi, and have a small secondary camera that's a fuji for carrying around at parties and get togethers. it fits in my pocket and takes decent pics. if it's something I know I'm going to take a lot of pictures at and am at a place I can trust, I'll take the XTi if I can set it down and not worry about it walking off..
