Honestly I think this was set up so they didn't have to fire him. It's a nice way of saying we don't want you back while making it appear they did to some extent.[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 2:56 AM. Reason : .]
10/19/2007 2:55:39 AM
Its a bullshit way out of not having to fire him. Everyone new he wouldnt take the offer. They fired a manager that got them to the playoffs every year. Imagine the manager they will hire. Now imagine them not getting to the playoffs one year. If they fired Joe, they got to fire thae person.

^^ See I just don't get that at all.Obviously, I'm a huge Yankee fan -- have been for 22 years. I'm a big-time Joe Torre fan. Love the guy; wish he would have stayed. But like Colin Cowherd was saying this morning, the offer still would have made him the highest-paid manager in baseball. Cowherd basically said, "HOW DARE THE YANKEES OFFER PERFORMANCE MOTIVATION!"And I agree with that. I can understand how people say it was designed to be turned down, but I don't buy that. I understand the argument, I just come down on the other side. That's all.
10/19/2007 10:31:29 AM
The highest paid manager in the majors is now Pinella... making $3.5m... so $5m ain't all that bad.Plus, for the first time in Yankees recent history, they have capped the value of SOMETHING. They throw money around like it's nothing, but all of a sudden, $2m breaks the bank?
10/19/2007 10:36:09 AM
^^ I highly doubt it was about the money for Torre either. The guy has to be tired of getting shit on year after year and constantly having to answer questions about his job. If my boss was constantly putting unrealistic demands on me and having me beg for my job every year, I would give him a big 'fuck off' too, no matter the money involved.
10/19/2007 10:50:44 AM
And you know what? That's fine. The Yankees job is just like that as long as Steinbrenner is around. If Torre was just ready to move on, good for Joe. I, and every other Yankee fan, wish him the best. But I totally agree with Cowherd on this one. Saying the offer was just a ridiculous slap in the face? Eh...not so much. Less than he was getting paid? Yes it was, but he was making twice what the next highest-paid manager in baseball was making. This wasn't about money. Torre was probably gone regardless of what the Yankees were going to offer, and he was probably gone of his own accord.
10/19/2007 11:14:08 AM
Torre isn't even that good of a manager. Yes I said it.Go back and look what his record was coaching my team.I will wager someone that no matter who the Yankees hire, pending they don't lose the whole team to free agency, that they will still make the playoffs. Joe Torre = MLB Phil Jackson, only wins with great talent and everyone slobs their knobs because of their championships. I could coach some of the Yankee teams he has to the playoffs.

10/19/2007 12:25:55 PM
I don't want to comment on this but I feel its already out of control. The terms where fine. Joe feels insulted b/c they were trying to motivate him to do better. Joe I love you. Seriously, I've never told a man that before. But lover, you're being a dick. No one is above being motivated especially if they have underachieved. Yeah sure the "Championship or Failure" mentality of the Boss' blows. But we all know what we play for year in year out. So don't say your insulted, but just say you didn't feel like coaching anymore. And Torre is a great manager. Any Yankee fan over 24 remembers how bad we were 13 years ago. This year of moving players around and getting us to the playoffs was brilliant. But playoff collapse 7 years in a row, esp. to the fucking Sox in 4 games, can hurt too much to bear. Let me take the time to say if I see Steve Phillips comment on this topic again, I may knock his perverted former managering Met ass off his high horse. I wish John Kruk would slap him. And this idea that the Yankees will fall apart after Joe leaves, is stupid.Jeter, Cano, Cabrera, Matsui, Posada (will be back), Chamberlin, Pettite (will return), Rivera (ditto), and young pitching farm players. Brackman anyone?
10/19/2007 3:34:33 PM
Torre's back.........
10/19/2007 3:45:00 PM
they obviously didn't really want him back, it's not like they were saying "PLEASE COME BACK JOE" and he said screw you guys...

NY Yanks potential free agents:Bobby Abreu (team option)Roger ClemensDoug MientkiewiczJose MolinaAndy Pettitte (player option)Jorge Posada (player option)Alex Rodriguez (player option)Mariano RiveraLuis VizcainoHeard Pettitte would leave if Torre went, Rivera said the same thing too, Clemens and Pettitte follow each other around and hes old anyways. Just wishful thinking but I hope they all leave, the Yankees can't sign any big free agents, and go back to the way it was before Torre.
