it's called the Hanover knot. It's like a thicker windsor, and produces a wider base. It has a couple of extra loops in it, so it uses more tie. it's a good looking knot.

im the only guy that will wear ties to my job

I only do it on occasion though..

my group used to have a very strict dress code that involved a tie and jacket.

you were only allowed to be without your jacket whilst sitting at your desk.

even to piss, you had to put your jacket back on

Hmm, I might employ this since I have a short torso, for me and the Windsor, it's a fine line between thin enough when tying so that the knot is a good size but such that I didn't leave too much length on the tie. So if this uses more tie, then I can start with the thin part of the tie and pull it in as needed with this knot. Maybe.

For a Windsor I find myself leaving about 10" of the narrow end to give me the perfect length on the torso. For the Hanover, it's reduced to about 5" to give the same torso length. And interestingly enough, you start with the tie inside out.

^ It will only be too large if you're one of those people who love ultra tiny tie knots, like the four-in-hand. I actually prefer a thicker tie just to get the extra base.

^^^^ They always say dress for the job that you want, not for the one that you have. Or at least my grandfather did, who insisted that his employees wear suits everyday, complete with a perfect Windsor knot. I usually will wear a suit to work now that I've started to "move up" a little and have earned more responsibility. I've noticed that people tend to treat you a little more professionally and will be a little more respectful or courteous to you. Plus, it's given me the opportunity to build up my suit collection to a point where I think my grandfather would be proud of me

Larger people typically go for the smaller knots just to overcome the length on the torso issue. On the opposite side, there's a guy who is slightly taller than a midget, and he buys ties from the boys' section of the department store.

My boss has never figured out how to tie a good tie, and he keeps about 5 clip-ons in his coat closet in his office

I like a standard size Windsor. Not "ultra small". I don't even know the 4 handed, so the concept of an ultra small knot is foreign to me. I mean for fucks sake, the website just told you that thicker ties will give problems, and then you're going to tell me it doesn't if I tie it in a certain way?

I didn't mean it that way... I was just saying from experience and by owning all different kinds of ties of varying thicknesses, I've never ran into the issue of having a Windsor knot that was "too big" and caused trouble.

The Windsor knot will obviously be larger, and may be too big for those who prefer the smaller knots, at which point they shouldn't be tying a Windsor in the first place. And by ultra-small, I mean the typical asymmetrical, single-looped knots (like this one, although there are even smaller ones that look even more hideous).

^ you just gotta keep practicing. And yea, don't leave a tie tied longer than it's around your neck, because that will permanently deform the tie. It's also not a good idea to remove the tie by pulling the narrow end through the knot, rather just untie it the reverse of how you tied it.

I'll stick with the half-winsor. Easy to tie. Doesn't take up too much of the tie. And, best of all, when you slide out the short part, the thing gently unravels - no muss, no fuss ....

i love wearing ties. I would look like a stiff at my current job though so i never wear one to work. Dress code here is business casual at its finest with casual friday. Not to mention i have to visit the occasional job site.

but back on topic, i love a good tie and perfectly tied tie to match. I am a knot perfectionist when it comes to getting dressed and wearing ties.
