So I was talking to a friend the other day and reminiscing about the good ol' days at state. This got me wondering, what are all the cool things about state that set it apart from other universities. Also, what are some things that freshmen now are missing out on (i.e. Brentroad parties in their prime), or random facts that they probably wouldn't know (Brickyard Gary, Riddick parking lot was once Riddick stadium).

Everything is made out of beautiful bricks, except Harrelson. And we have two really cool hyperbolic dishes next to the brickyard.

the cow that you can reach into, it's stomach has a resealable valve that lets you see and feel inside of it. the bee apery or whatever it's called, and also bees and beekeeping the class, what a great class. the state fair used to be across from the library, way back when. there are only two none-brick buildings on campus, and only two non-red brick buildings (they are yellow brick)the building near the bell tower that the chancelors office is in, used to be NC State, like the classes, dorms and all, in that building. Harrelson is sinking, slowly, and a Clemson engineer designed it, soooo, yeahthere used to be a whole mounted police patrol, but now just the fewthere still are, and have been for a long time, plans to build a monorail, though this will probably never happen (you can look at the university master plan which projects for like 100 years of growth, it's pretty cool)

When I was a junior in high school I came to NCSU for an open house and the tour guide said that thing about Harrelson sinking. They also said the library was sinking because whoever designed it didn't account for the weight of all the books. It seems like someone brought up one or the other at least once a semester in one of my classes or so and the professor said it was all a load of BS.

10/17/2007 5:02:34 PM
I'm here.
10/17/2007 5:05:19 PM
Back in the day there were these grates behind the gym that you could lift up and sneak inside at night. I heard there was a similar system for sneaking into the atrium and grabbing all the Hostess cakes you wanted, but that might be a myth.

They're called storm drains. They drain the water away from sidewalks and roads during and after rain. They don't lead inside any buildings, since it doesn't rain in there.I heard that a freshman went missing, and it was a while before they realized he went down there and asphyxiated.

^x6 You can also get a spiral-bound hard copy--I have one around here somewhere--from the Bookstore or University Graphics maybe?
10/18/2007 12:19:33 AM
^ Do you know for sure where to get a physical copy? I'd like to have one and the NRL would be upset if I stole theirs.
10/18/2007 1:08:29 AM
^ To be honest, I can't remember where I got mine. It was several years ago either from the Bookstore or University Graphics, but I think I got it from Graphics--call them to see if they have copies available.

it was my understanding that the north or south tower had to be redesigned mid-construction due to the engineers not taking into consideration the weight of the books. not that it is in fact sinking

The extensive network of steam tunnels that run under campus were, last time I checked, still extant and still accessible to those in the know. For the most part, the tunnels are not terribly interesting, and mostly just provide an opportunity to get real hot. There are, however, a couple of interesting sights, like the giant pile of NRA trophies we found in one chamber. There's also some legend about nerds playing D&D down there and deciding to kill their mom or something like that. It's a pack of lies, but entertaining nonetheless.
