I just got a new Sony LCD TV and I'm trying to set it up as a second monitor (in addition to TV) to watch movies, etc. from my computer. My video card on my computer has a DVI out port, and I really want to maintain as much picture quality as I can so I got a DVI-HDMI cable. The problem seems to be with the TV getting the picture from the computer. The computer recognizes the TV, but the TV doesn't seem to output any picture. It says in the TV manual to use a VGA cable when connecting to a computer... I got that to work but the quality is pretty sub-par. I also got it working through S-video but that doesn't seem to improve picture quality that much. Do you guys have any recommendations as to how I can get the DVI-HDMI connection to work or just any ways of increasing picture quality?

What resolution is that display set to (in your graphics card settings)? How big is your TV? Is it a rear projection LCD or flat panel?

Flat panel 40 inch Sony Bravia

I don't remember the exact resolution (I'll take a look when I get home today) but I tried initially at just 1024x768 and (as I expected) it didn't look too great. I tried higher ones but they honestly didn't look too much better and I for a lot of them the aspect ratio wasn't right so I would have had to mess with settings on the TV to get it to actually looking correct.

The DVI-HDMI cable should work fine. What type of video card do you have? In the nvidia control panel there's a 1080p HDTV settings that you can output through the dvi port.

^Yeah I was thinking it might the video card, it's pretty old... ATI Radeon X700 (I've been meaning to upgrade due to Crysis anyway). I have used the DVI out tons of times on a different TV I was using before that had (I think) a DVI in.

will your graphics card output 1920x1080? Also, make sure your refresh rate is set to 30 Hz. Your TV might not like a 60 Hz signal. Other than that I don't know why the TV wouldn't display the signal.

OK i ran in to this with my old agp desktop

1080p is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz you're not getting enough fps to run it at 1080p try 720p and see if it works... it may not cause my tv at least tried to show 1080i when i was trying to input 1080p.
