a thought hit me... being able to get into buildings all over campus and all that kind of thing. are there security cameras on campus or anything like that? i've wondered this... like if my car gets busted up or somebody tries to steal stuff from campus buildings, etc.

anybody know?

no, only in areas they consider problematic.

unless it's a huge deal, they won't start doing it until new funding comes through.

there were crazy reports of people stealing stuff back in the day, nothing was done b/c there was no evidence. not locking doors and having no cameras will do that to you.

the university just wrote everything off and got insurance money for it.

most of the monitors/computers are attached to alarm boxes or something.

honestly, I don't feel like having my engineering building locked down after 5pm for those of us who actually need the computer labs/shops after the workday. Assuming most are in class for 3 hours during the day minimum that gives 5 hours per day max. I'm not smart enough to get that shit knocked out in time in there, and the library aint gonna cut it, trying to run engineering programs through the distance applications is ridiculous, especially on resource-hogging programs. We got a senior design lab to our respective department, but hell if I can't get in the building then whats the point of the dedicated lab? I see what your point is, but give me (sr, grads, etc.) an electronic key card on the doors like nelson and I'd think we're money on that. maybe even ones that log who's card it is so they know who is abusing the system/stealing.

i had a key to Daniels for a long time. i forget how i got it originally. once you got a key, you basically kept it til you graduated.. (at least when I was there, up to 2003)

i think you can get a prof to sign you off to get one if you have legitimate work to do there (like Sr Design, for instance)

i remember being in tucker lab a while back, and some kid unplugged his mouse for something, then plugged it back in. about 2 minutes later some guy proceeds to barge in the room and inspect every inch of his computer for like 5 minutes. some of that stuff is on serious lockdown.

I set one off in Jordan Hall once adjusting the monitor so I didn't have to slouch while using it. Loud is an understatement. It was physically painful to be inside the room when it went off.

at georgia tech, the id cards have the magnetic stripe and built in RFID, the newer buildings have RFID readers

all the buildings are locked after 5 or 6 and on weekends

and you have to personally request access to the buildings you need

all the computer labs are locked 24/7 with cameras

they dont play here...however, if i need to access the lab, my office, etc at any time i can, i like this setup better than nc state

^ That's the direction NCSU is moving. Most of the newer campus buildings have RFID readers ready to go for non-public spaces.
