Political spying is nothing new, but it is certainly becoming more high tech, and it is disturbing to think that private conversations pretty much don't exist anymore. I suppose this has probably been true for a while.

This kind of reminds me of when the US first entered Iraq, the locals thought we had portable AC's under our flak jackets and x-ray goggles that could see through womens' burkas. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that our friendly protesters are grossly overestimating both the capabilities and will of the government to "keep the man down".

That, or maybe they want to feel like the government is more worried about them than they really are, and jump at every possibility that the Man is using every advanced resource it has in its arsenal to track them.
