WHAT? I'll be arriving for my honeymoon Dec 31st at 630 in the morning. Obviously, we'll be bringing in the New Year at the Eiffel Tower but then we have 5 1/2 more days to explore Paris and what's close by. On our list: The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame + a winery tour. If you've been there and have good suggestions on things to do (or not to do) or places to go (or avoid) please share. I'm also trying to figure out if there's additional stuff that can be done in the winter...

shit, you can spend a week just exploring the fourth district

Learn French and go see the Moulin Rouge...There are some beautiful palaces (other than Versailles). Check out Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau. They are in the same area and about a 15min drive from each other...just SE of the city. Take a train out there and grab a cab from the train station. (30 min train ride)

what are all these districts about?? are they just places like "china town" in NYC? My boss recommends the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th. I haven't been able to find a map coloring in the different districts so i don't even know where they are. What's to do in the 4th?

is the eurorail the best way to get between countries? I thought about that... taking a trip to Germany, Switzerland (for snowboarding), or to Amsterdam. I've been there though, and if i went i'd want to smoke again, and i'm not allowed to do that. is the eurorail cheap and efficient? does it mostly travel overnight? i can't seem to understand how to navigate through their website.
10/9/2007 2:18:25 PM
you can spend a whole day if not more in the lourve. you can go to the top of that hill where all the painters are but there probably wont be too many out in january. oh yea and
10/9/2007 2:19:28 PM
yeah just put all the stuff from your pockets on the side of the field
10/9/2007 2:23:13 PM
eurail is good if you're making multiple trips between countries; if you're staying in france, just get tickets through sncf
10/9/2007 2:26:58 PM
Go to the Musee (their modern art museum)...the building alone is worth it.

1. After dinner, hire a limo. Preferably a dark colored Mercedes-Benz.2. Have a drunk Frenchman drive you around Paris at speeds of over 80 mph, making sure to take the tunnels and narrow streets.3. When he crashes and you die, hope the world will think it's a conspiracy 10 years from now.
10/9/2007 4:48:27 PM
Do not bathe or shower the entire week so that you will smell like the rest of the French people. Also I know it is out of your control, but this is a horrible time for an American to go visit Europe given the weak US dollar. I hope you've got some serious bank to spend because you will be shocked at the prices when you get there.
10/9/2007 5:27:43 PM
go to Notre Dame during a service, the opening part with the organ is amazing. we just happened to luck into that, but definitely glad we did.make sure you have a LOT of time to wander around the Louvre. we had less than 2 hours and it wasn't nearly long enough.make sure to ask for water 'sin gas' or you'll get fizzy water. our waiter wasn't happy when we asked him to take it back. definitely try coffee and croissants pretty much anywhere. it comes in tiny little cups that don't make it seem worth the 2 euros, but is soooo good!as for the eurail... you can go to the station and get a reservation/ticket the day before you want to go anywhere. go earlier if you think it's a day (weekend) that a lot of people will be traveling. they'll help you out with the times and everything. a couple trains do travel at night, but we never did that so i can't help you out there. paris to munich was a hella long ride, but it was also the prettiest. we got stuck in Lyon, France for one night, and ended up liking it a lot more than Paris. seemed a bit more laid back and chill. one of our best meals of Europe was in Lyon, but maybe that was because we splurged a little....also, don't try to sneak extra people into your hotel room. they'll get really mad...[Edited on October 9, 2007 at 5:30 PM. Musée d'OrsaySacré-CœurArc de Triomphe at dusk, so you can see the Eiffel Tower light up
10/9/2007 6:33:33 PM
Napoleon's Tomb at L'Invalides (?) is pretty fuckin coolnot in itself, it's just a huge wooden casket, but it's pretty cool to think that Napoleon's skeleton is inside
10/9/2007 6:42:37 PM
Don't forget that you are American... and that American's shower daily. Also, make sure your new bride remembers that she is American, and American women shave their armpits.
