I start my new job in Garner NC tomorrow, but I live in Greensboro, NC. My lease isnt up until December. My office is 100 miles away from my house. My G35 sucks down gas like a fat kid does milk shakes. Thats 200 miles a day, 5 days a week, 4000 miles a month!!! I guess my car does about 20mpg... 4000m/20mpg = 200 gallons of gas a month. 200 x $2.80gas = $560 a month in gas. NO WAY!!!!

I do plan on moving to the Raleigh area soon. Until then I cant seem to find a carpool or vanpool service that fits my schedule and destination. I work 8-5pm M-F

to spend that much in gas, it might be easier to break your lease and move sooner. I'd talk with your leasing agent telling them your situation and try to work something out.

My first 'real' job was 92 miles away in Lumberton, NC. Every morning I drove an hour and a half and every evening I drove an hour and a half + rush hour. It was by no means 'fun' and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...I would definitely suggest breaking the lease as ^ said.

The final 2 weeks of my co-op, I drove from Raleigh to Fayetteville and hated my life.

I'd DEFINITELY talk with my leasing agent and try anything to wiggle out. Maybe offer a breaking-lease penalty less than they want -- they might be nice considering your situation.

I would NOT continue that drive. You'll hate your new job before you even have a chance to like it.

screw that. i would even just eat the remaining 2 months rent before i did that every day. still, unless your landlord is a complete dick they should help you out since it's close to the end. maybe charge you only half of the remaining rent or something like that.

in the past my lease agreements included a "if you move more than 100 miles away" clause.

you should check to see if they have one.

your job performance will also take a hit..given that its a new job you would need to be on your best game to make a good impression. Showing up to work fatigued everyday sucks....the drive home will also suck and you will increase your chances of a traffic accident.

If it costs $560 a month to commute, it'd probably be worth renting a cheap 1 bedroom apartment to stay in during the week. Costs (gas vs. extra rent) are probably comparable, and you'd definitely save yourself the aggravation of driving 4 hours everyday.

Definitely see if you can get out of the lease.

Find someone to take over your lease in GBoro. Offer to subsidise Oct Nov Dec rent. If you throw someone $100 a month credit per rent, and you're not putting out $560 in gas, then you're still $460 ahead of the game.

Dude, you can get out of that lease. Leases are not suppose to be immutable legal instruments that ruin peoples lives. I know this as a landlord myself. Tell your landlord that you have a job and need to move, unless they want to pay you. If they say no, tell them talk to your lawyer. Leases are not meant to put your life on hold. Make a good faith effort to the get the place rented, but don't let it ruin your life.
