(yes this is a chitchat thread)

Alternatives?

Pros:
- Portability
- Interface
- Web enabled

Cons:
- storage is not expandable
- price
- itunes (i'm a linux user)
- no 3rd party apps

The only alternative I know of is the Nokia n800 or whatever it is, which kinda sucks balls.

I think the deciding factor will be if I can get iTunes working under linux.

If so, BUY!

not to be a douche but i would think a regular ipod would have a more single hand friendly interface.
again i'm just curious

Not to buy.

Wait until the next generation when they put more storage in it for the same price.

its pretty easy to use. Even of you type the wrong letters it puts up the right word for you. This is a very well developed piece of equipment. I planned on returning it but im really starting to like it. Very easy to use!!!

Btw...you need iTunes to start it for the first time..other than that..not sure.

I wish it had a speaker for music and videos though. This built-in speaker is only for key clicks and alarms (which its too quiet for anyway).

how much are they going for?

jellyfish.com sold a few for $250 and a little more than that.

Isn't it the same thing as the iphone just minus the phone part and some other small features?

I have the iphone and the only thing that sucks is the internet speed...but the new one will be out shortly and I'll trade it in...

I don't think I'll ever buy an Apple product, I just don't agree with their business practices. And for me those 3rd party apps are the selling point of any PDA (that's really what this is.) No third party apps, no infrared/bluetooth sending or headphones, EXPENSIVE, and you can't use it with your operating system. What kind of question are you posing, exactly?

Buy a nice PDA, an 8GB SD card, load it with linux and run whatever you want to on it. Still plays music, still browses the web, still portable. Plus you can buy a new battery in 2 years when it's shot. Blows my mind why anyone would buy iPod trash...

^ you order off the website or from 3rd party retailer? I was looking into their new line, finally getting some specs to get my attention (plus I'm slowly picking up more and more servers that need managing and W2003 just ain't cutting it.)

some suggestions on what to buy instead of the iTouch? the iTouch would be perfect if it were a fully functional PDA. as for linux-based (or hax0red homebrew linux) devices, what's got a good/fast/responsive (preferably touch, rather than stylus) interface? compact size (flash memory based) is a huge plus.

I have a 4th gen regular ipod and it works fine. I could not see myself watching videos on a device with a screen smaller than my calculator.

i'm looking at devices like the ipod Touch and the archos 605 wifi, which have much larger displays. i'm not as interested in video playback as i am in wifi. the archos can be hooked up to a TV for video playback (which my ultra-portable notebook is lacking).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190143814772&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=250163999588&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget

so i'm debating whether to get this knockoff (which has its own built-in fm radio transmitter) or an actual ipod. the only downside to this generic is that it only gets 8 hrs of playback on a full charge (vs 24 hrs). other than that, i don't see why a real ipod would be better. any feedback/comments?

apple does some great things with hardware, then they go and fuck it all up with their software

^^^i wouldn't buy that. the problem with knock-off devices like these is they usually have very cheap LCDs. I made the mistake of buying a knock-off GPS, and the LCD (while HUGE -- 8") had an 8 Hz refresh rate

^ well it has a samsung chip, and all those sellers have 99% positive feedback with no complaints about the product itself. i would have thought at least a few people on here have bought this.
it prbly does have a cheaper lcd, but i plan on using it primarily for radio/music. radio is pretty important to me, and i've heard a lot of complaints about the ipod's external fm transmitter.

sure get it, then in a few months the price will go down, and people will have what you paid $texas for, but for a lot less.
