"The Eight Most Fattening Foods of Fall

As the temperature drops, we start yearning for comfort foods. But beware of their hefty caloric price. A few of autumn's least healthy offerings.

Oct. 1, 2007 - The leaves start turning, the wind gets cold, and all you want to do is curl up with delicious but heavy autumn treats. And even though our fall favorites aren't exactly known as diet foods, their calorie counts might still surprise you. Turns out Thanksgiving essentials aren't the only figure-busting culprits. Here's a list of the worst eight:

1. Halloween candy With all the bowls and bags of bite-size treats around the house, it's all too tempting to steal a few. But those tiny chocolate bars are more of a trick than a treat. Eat just four "bite size" bars and you're up to 320 calories. Twenty pieces of candy corn will cost you 100 calories, and just 25 jelly beans add up to 140 calories.

2. Mashed potatoes They are the quintessential comfort food for fall. But watch out before taking seconds: weighed down with milk and butter, mashed potatoes usually have about 200 calories in a half-cup serving.

3. Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte Starbucks drinks are notoriously high in calories, and their autumn special is no exception. The Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte weighs in at 510 calories and 20 grams of fat.

4. Apple pie A Thanksgiving dinner is never complete without a slice of apple pie. But with more than 400 calories and 20 grams of fat, this might be one dessert you shouldn't be saving room for. Add a scoop of ice cream (who doesn't?) and you're up to 530 calories. It might just be enough to last you until next fall.

5. Cider Who doesn't love a cup of warm cider? You might not want to skip this traditional treat altogether, but with a sugar-laden 200 calories in 16 ounces, the sweet drink should probably be considered a dessert substitute rather than a beverage.

6. Stuffing At 358 calories and 18 grams of fat per cup, there's a reason they call it stuffing. The high-carb turkey companion may be appearing on lots of menus this fall, not to mention its starring role on Thanksgiving Day, but take it easy if you're trying to keep the fall weight gain to a minimum.

7. Candy apple An apple alone is a pretty healthy fall fruit somewhere in the 60-100 calorie range. Coat it in caramel, however, and you have quite a different story. A large candy apple with caramel usually weighs in around 540 calories. Avoiding this autumn treat will be a boon for your dental bills and your figure.

8. Turducken This combo wonderbird is a trendy entree you might want to forgo. It contains turkey, duck and chicken wrapped together for a new twist on the usual Thanksgiving meal. In terms of your diet, that twist may be for the worse: one serving of Turducken has 749 calories and 34.5 grams of fat. Try limiting yourself to one bird and skip the crispy skin. A three-ounce serving of skinless turkey has 130 calories."

I think a true weight loss success story is surviving winter.

Also, evolution has programmed us to eat 10% more during the fall and winter so that we'll have more padding to last until spring if the food supply dies out.

I dont eat mashed potatoes or stuffing, they're just gross. Turducken is way too much meat.

Last year though I seriously killed some Halloween candy. My mother's apple pie is wonderful along with that side of vanilla ice cream. Starbuck's? Perfect for a chilly day with a book. Last year I had a candy apple from Gatlinburg because they're to die for, I shared it with my man though.

Definitely will have to watch it this year. It's shitty because it seems all there is to do in the fall is eat tasty things.

I was just really close to ordering a pumpkin latte at Dunkin' Donuts. I think it sounds delicious, but I've been on a serious squash kick lately for some reason.

It's really weird thinking of squash-flavored coffee.

1. Sometimes I buy Halloween candy on sale after Halloween.

2. I eat these all year.

3. I don't drink starbucks.

4. MMMM, but I prefer pumpkin pie, which is not as bad.

5. Meh, I'll drink it sometimes, I don't think I could drink 16 ounces.

6. Absolutely love stuffing, but I pretty much only eat it on thanksgiving and Christmas

7. I like them, but don't ever eat them.

8. These things are like $40, no way would I eat one.

Oh, all I read is the title of the thread and scanned through the list.

Anyway, it's not like Americans don't eat shitty foods year round. Autumn just has a unique set of junk foods rather than the every day junk foods we eat.

I am really sick of hearing about how fattening or high calories some type of food has. Or some bitch priding herself on counting calories. YOUR BODY NEEDS CALORIES AND CARBS in order to sustain itself. The reason people get fat is b.c they over gorge themselves and/or do not EXERCISE. If everyone made an effort to get 30mins-1 hour of exercise (running, weightlifting, sports, walk around the neighborhood, sex with the mrs.) obesity would not be as much of a problem. Instead most americans would rather sit in the recliner and watch big brother 30, celebrity ice skating, everyone loves raymond, or one of the other brain rotting tv show that poisons the TV guide.

I sometimes eat healthy. Sometimes i say fuck it and pig down on some fatty food. I lift weights 2-3 times a week and get some other form of cardio at least 2 other days. Thus my weight is 160 compared to 150 upon entering college.

Another issue is the "late night munchies" that i see after a night of drinking. A group of girls begged me to go by cookout on the way of dropping them off last thursday night. No wonder girls get the freshman 15

Being a physical superman doesn't mean your organs are healthy on the inside. Surprisingly what we eat actually does effect how well our body functions.

So go ahead and day "I work out all the time so I can eat like shit and look better than you." I bet your insides don't look as grand as mine.

I think the thing is HUR people don't pay real close attention to what they're putting into their bodies. If they did we wouldn't have twice as many obese people as Europe (which is a fact I saw on CNN while working out, good motivation :spin

Anyway to each their own!

"No wonder some people will always be fat"

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/10/15/big.breakfast.burrito.ap/index.html

Quote :
"60 grams of fat for breakfast!

Story Highlights

Hardee's new breakfast burrito contains 920 calories, 60 grams of fat
2 egg omelets, bacon, sausage, ham, cheddar, hash browns, sausage gravy
Nutritionist: burrito has half a day's calories, full day's worth of saturated fat, salt

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- The people who brought you the Monster Thickburger and the 1,100-calorie salad are at it again -- this time for breakfast.

Hardee's on Monday rolled out its new Country Breakfast Burrito -- two egg omelets filled with bacon, sausage, diced ham, cheddar cheese, hash browns and sausage gravy, all wrapped inside a flour tortilla. The burrito contains 920 calories and 60 grams of fat.

Brad Haley, marketing chief for the St. Louis-based fast-food chain, said the burrito offers the sort of big breakfast item normally found in sit-down restaurants with an added advantage.

"It makes this big country breakfast portable," he said.

In 2003 the chain introduced a line of big sandwiches, including the Monster Thickburger. The 1,420-calorie sandwich is made up of two 1/3-pound slabs of beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered bun.

Even Hardees' chicken salad -- topped with onion rings and crispy chicken -- has 1,100 calories and 83 grams of fat.

The chain does offer some low-calorie options, including roast beef and chicken sandwiches.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based advocate for nutrition and health, has called the Hardee's line of Thickburgers "food porn."

The group's senior nutritionist, Jayne Hurley, said Monday that the burrito was "another lousy invention by a fast-food company."

The "country breakfast bomb," as she called it, represents half a day's calories and a full day's worth of saturated fat and salt, to say nothing of cholesterol.

"That's all before 10 o'clock in the morning," she said.

Haley makes no apologies.

"We don't try to hide what these are," he said. "When consumers go to other fast-food places they feel like they've got to buy two of their breakfast sandwiches or burritos to fill up. This is really designed to fill you up."

The government's Center for Nutritional Policy and Promotion recommends a daily caloric intake ranging from 1,600 calories for sedentary women and older adults to 2,800 calories for teenage boys and active adults. Hardee's sees its core customers as young men ages 18 to 34, Haley said, though it expects a wider range for breakfast items.

The Country Breakfast Burrito is generally available for $2.69 by itself or $4.09 for a combo that includes hash rounds and coffee."
