I'm sure that thread title will lead to many juvenile jokes, but still I ask:Does anyone know where I can get Boiled Peanuts in Raleigh? I've been craving some for weeks!
10/2/2007 10:26:42 AM
Boiled? I don't know that I've ever had them boiled. Blanched, yes.Couldn't you just buy some raw peanuts and boil them yourself?
10/2/2007 10:32:41 AM
how do you live in NC and have never had boiled peanuts'go'on, git boy
10/2/2007 10:34:24 AM

You can buy them raw and boil them yourself (though it takes several hours), but I'm not even sure where to buy raw peanuts. And I really want some NOW!

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find any at the Farmer's Market. Thats your best bet in Raleigh.
10/2/2007 10:50:46 AM
You can get them at the grocery store. They come in a kind of rice bag thing. You open up the pouch, put it in the microwave for about a minute, and their ready to go. Pretty good too.
10/2/2007 11:06:40 AM
I saw some in a can at a gas station in Creedmoor. But I don't think those would be worth eating.
10/2/2007 11:28:36 AM
I used to eat those canned ones when I was a kid. I remember them being good. I think it was a yellow can. They were called [FAMILY NAME]'s green peanuts, I think. But I would still try the Farmer's market.
10/2/2007 11:44:46 AM
They sell them at the flea market every weekend
10/2/2007 11:51:44 AM
They do sell them at the flea market? Sweet! Any idea where they are on the concourse? And what are the Farmer's Market hours? That sounds cool, but I don't think I can get there before they close since I work 9-5

I don't know the farmer's market doesn't seem to be hurting at all. There are always a good crowd down there. And geographically I would argue that it is pretty much in the middle of the Wake County.

splitting up the farmer's market is a retarded ideaI would like for the main one to be downtown but of course parking and other issues would follow. Never been to the Moore Square market, how is it?
10/2/2007 2:27:49 PM
I haven't been either. It's only on Wednesdays though from April to October.

Sure it would be more convenient, but there's really not that much to split up, you know? It's not even that big to begin with. Sure there are 8 or however many stands selling to some extent the same variety of produce, but that's not many. And then there's the specialists who most likely can only afford to operate at one location (the bakery, the meat lady, the goat guy). Also, I think the larger format is key to the whole Farmer's Market atmosphere that draws people there in the first place.A better location? I could agree with that, just not splitting it up[Edited on October 2, 2007 at 3:40 PM. Reason : l]

They sell awesome ones at the roadside stands on 70 just before you get to Goldsboro, or at least they used to when I lived down there.

1. You can get raw peanuts at the farmer's market this time of year. You're going to want to get the ones that are fresh out of the ground (i.e., not dried up.) Sometimes they refer to them as "green" peanuts although they are not actually green in color. It is getting late in the season, so go within the next few weeks for sure.2. Boiling peanuts is not a difficult or drawn out process. Put em in the biggest pot you can find, get it boiling, toss in the peanuts with a cup of salt, put on the lid, stir occasionally for a few hours and check to see if they're done. Towards the end it is easy to add more or less salt to taste because the shells are so thin and soggy.3. If you want any for the winter just boil some extra and store them in zip lock bags in the freezer. When you're ready to eat just boil them for 15 or 20 minutes and add a little more salt. You cannot use the dry raw peanuts that they'll be selling at the farmer's market this winter (actually you can, but you have to boil them pretty much all day and they won't taste nearly as good.)4. There is usually at least one guy at the flea market selling them. You'll probably pay $3 for a ~16oz styrofoam cup of them.5. The gas stations in the Carolina Beach/Kure Beach area sell them year round. I'm jealous.6. Soda is crucial. Pepsi is preferred, but Coke will do in a pinch.[Edited on October 2, 2007 at 4:16 PM. ^ I prefer RC Cola Exit 364 on I-40 (Warsaw) has a produce stand that sells them sometimes. I always stop there when I head home.
10/2/2007 4:36:15 PM
you realize they sell them canned at the grocery store?[Edited on October 2, 2007 at 4:54 PM. Reason : sp]

You do realize that that canned shit is nowhere near the same as fresh boiled peanuts. Its like instant grits. No self respecting southerner should eat either.
10/2/2007 5:12:01 PM
haha, do what you gotta do chief
10/2/2007 5:16:10 PM
just don't try to go to the flea market this weekend, its shut down until after the fair! i remember seeing boiled peanuts on the side of the road all the time when i lived in SC...never here though
10/2/2007 5:47:48 PM
I bought a can from the Farmer's market back in 2002, and that was the VILEST SHIT I have ever had.It tasted like 90% salt, and 10% mush.Who the hell eats so much salt??? I had no idea there was so much salt in them, so I took a handful after I drained the can, and stuffed them in my mouth. I had to cough it all out. PURE SALT.
10/2/2007 8:52:53 PM
^hush your trap.
10/2/2007 11:24:09 PM
^^Well your first problem is you bought fucking canned ones.
10/2/2007 11:46:26 PM
10/3/2007 1:32:26 AM
right...... because getting good boiled peanuts is all about getting the freshest raw peanuts right into the salt water as quickly as possible!
10/3/2007 7:59:12 AM
Gotta have 'em hot. After they are cold they just aren't the same.
10/3/2007 10:20:55 AM
I love em cold. One of my uncles grew peanuts as his main crop, so we'd just go out there and pick a few five gallon buckets every year. Unfortunately he retired from farming and he's just leasing the land now. [Edited on October 3, 2007 at 10:48 AM. Reason : s]

10/3/2007 2:07:48 PM
Oh man...I was rolling through Pinetops two weeks ago and I got some bomb peanuts from a guy selling them out of the back of his truck right there in the middle of town.
