i have a 99 pontiac sunfire. a few years ago some part in the steering column got recalled for causing fires i think. anyway, lately i've been noticing a lot of heat coming from inside the column. sometimes i'll only drive down the street and when i take the key out it burns my hand...or the center part of my steering wheel will get really hot.i don't really know anything about cars, is that stuff normal?

^^?^ i got the part replaced when it was recalled, but maybe the new part was bad too?this was the recall btw:Campaign Number: 04V036000 Date: 2004-Jan-27Component: Electrical System: Ignition: SwitchDefect Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.Consequence Summary: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. Dude, just take out full coverage insurance and don't leave anything of value in your car. I mean, it is a Pontiac Sunfire. You can only end up being better off no matter what happens.

Its also possible they didn't install the new part right. My wifes Taurus had a warning about defects in the way the transmission casing was coupled to the engine. we took it to a certified dealer repair place and got it fixed, then I noticed that the case was leaking fluid, they had put on some spacers in the replacement kit without removing spacers that were part of the old one. Certified doesn't mean they know what they're doing unfortunately.
