10/3/2007 4:03:28 PM
congrats dude.....i wish i were into competitive fishing...just leisure
10/3/2007 4:05:07 PM
I haven't been fishing in years but I'd love to do it again. So how do the tournaments work? Yeah there is a lot of skill involved in fishing but isn't a big part of it luck? So are the winners the guys who get the most/biggest fish?
10/3/2007 4:08:37 PM
^^I'm sure it's gonna be more of a headache than any recreational fishing...but I'm looking forward to itplus if I can pad my outdoor resume with some wins it will help me out down the road since I am looking to start guiding fishing trips along with the hunts I do^yeah, well it's luck and skill...you gota know where the fish are, not just the fish, but the big ones... which can be tricky in the ocean... but every offshore fisherman knows where the rocks, wrecks, hard bottoms, and breaks are... which is usually where the fish are. It's just knowing which ones have been producing your winning fish.over the last couple weekends, tournaments have been won with fish in the 40 pound range, but earlier in the summer (esp in NC) a 25 pound fish can win it... when we fish the gulf coast(Fl,AL, LA, TX) it'll probably in the 50-60 pound range that wins the moneyit helps to have a fast boat, some of our trips can be a 200+ mile run depending on where the weigh in is located[Edited on October 3, 2007 at 4:12 PM. 10/3/2007 4:08:48 PM
damn dude....bad ass life
10/3/2007 4:09:30 PM
you jump the breakers? Saw a guy rip a prop clean off doin that... crazy...
10/3/2007 4:13:15 PM
^^I guess it's nice to not pay to fish anymore ^ ehhh, what do you mean?usually the most breakers are in the inlet at low tide with some windunless it's blowing up pretty good, then you can have some big waves...well, an exception is the Cape Lookout Shoals about 10 miles out of Beaufort Inlet... I've seen the depthfinder go from 70' to 10' in a hundred yards! and yeah, there are some monster waves there[Edited on October 3, 2007 at 4:15 PM. Reason : ..]
10/3/2007 4:13:26 PM
So I guess you have to do a lot of research before hand of the area you are fishing at then.
10/3/2007 4:16:31 PM
well, you can go online and look at current temperature charts to see where the temp breaks are (usually fish are there)but most of the "structure" that holds fish is common knowledge among the people that fish the areait's all marked on charts, maps, and even on the internetplus we don't fish the bluewater usually (gulf stream) so all you really need to know is what spots have the big fish
10/3/2007 4:18:34 PM
if any of yall are at Atlantic Beach Oct 20th or are in the areacome to the weigh in and cheer for me!
10/3/2007 6:03:13 PM
you assholes better come cheer for us!
10/4/2007 1:38:45 PM
are you doing the big rock blue marlin tournament
10/4/2007 1:39:48 PM
nah, I fished that this year, but that was with a friend who asked me to come alongthats billfishing, you're talking about 5 million dollar boats out fishing that tournament but we fish King Mackerel tournaments from here to texashttp://abkmt.com/ there ya go, thats the site for our tournament here
10/4/2007 1:44:06 PM

10/4/2007 2:42:52 PM
hey greg i want to go hunting and fishing. how do i sign up?
10/4/2007 3:11:53 PM
I catch fish with sticks of dynamite. I also get arrested and can't go near fish anymore.
10/4/2007 3:13:15 PM
i hear hand grenades and depth charges work well also...
10/4/2007 3:15:08 PM
is this a full time job or something on the side?
10/4/2007 3:24:02 PM
Something on the side. Sometimes the guys who do one every weekend, own their own ride, and are already rich do it as a full-time gig.Not to belittle this, but it's basically an "anyone can join" type of thing and you just need to either A)own a big enough boat and have the money or B)know someone. It's still really cool and I'll prally dabble in it a bit when I can in the future, but it's not like he's become Mark Sosin or anything. No offense at all pwr, it's just that most of these cats are clueless.[Edited on October 4, 2007 at 4:02 PM. ok, hellbound, there are some threads which I do bragthis happens to be one of them
10/4/2007 9:54:41 PM
That's freakin' sweet!! Congrats!!
10/4/2007 9:58:36 PM
"jumping the breakers" - there are places where breakers form from the water getting really shallow, really quick (as you mentioned). There is a technique for larger boats with tons of power (2-4 engines) where you can hit the wave right and literally jump the breaker. Everyone else has to ride down to the end of the inlet, go around, then come back. Saves you tons of time, except in the event of missing the wave, catching the ground at full tilt and ripping a prop off.
10/4/2007 9:59:42 PM
^^ thanks yeah, ok... I've always just gone over them on the boats I've been on
10/4/2007 10:11:22 PM
You take me fishing, and I will take you hunting when I become a pro female hunter and have my own show!
10/4/2007 10:11:59 PM

Can someone really make a living being a "professional" fisherman? I mean how much money do you think you'll bring in on avg from a tourney? Is this going to be your only job now?
10/5/2007 10:12:20 AM
10/5/2007 10:19:53 AM
