Anyone have any idea if the new mac operating system (leopard) will work on the original G5 when released? mine isn't intel-based

NO
9/27/2007 2:04:36 PM
Yes, leopard is UNIVERSAL.The talk is that 10.6 will be intel only ;-(Minimum system requirements is only a recomendation... Why not try and see, go download the latest beta of Leopard and see. Leopard should be GM in a week or so.[Edited on September 27, 2007 at 3:09 PM. Reason : .]

thanks, huge help. any speculation on the price?
9/27/2007 10:22:56 PM
most likelt $129, like all the other versions of OS X have been, i believe
9/27/2007 10:25:08 PM
Yes, $129 on amazon right now, pre-order...But the best deal is to goto http://developer.apple.com and signup for a student membership and get access to all the developers tool sets including the Final GM image of Leopard when it goes gold.[Edited on September 28, 2007 at 2:06 PM. how much of a hardware discount do you get with that?
9/28/2007 2:27:25 PM
I am going to put this question here as opposed to starting a new thread. Is it possible to run multiple versions of OSX in a dual boot setup? I have the new beta for leopard and would love to install it to a partition on my external f/w drive, however, I am a total mac noob and don't know how this would affect my current tiger install.any help?(not being a pirate btw, just sampling)
9/30/2007 1:03:42 PM
you can probably just set up a 2nd partition and install 10.5 on it, then use the normal dual boot option to select which one to boot into
9/30/2007 1:22:38 PM
so the 10.5 build should have no effect on how my apps run in 10.4 when I boot back into it?
9/30/2007 1:37:08 PM
Correct. If you partition your drive, functionality is determined by the version of the OS on your designated Start-Up Disk.
9/30/2007 1:42:33 PM
my question is when will it start shipping on new machines? the website says that it's shipping in Oct and it's finally Oct but no mention is made about it shipping now.
10/1/2007 12:04:49 AM
It was October for 5 minutes when you posted that.
10/1/2007 12:34:31 AM
It's been several hours now and still nothing...
10/1/2007 7:41:42 AM
Everything I've heard from our Apple Rep suggests towards the end of the month, so you you should give it a few... hundred more hours.
10/1/2007 7:50:37 AM
yeah i feel like a complete nerd saying this, but it's driving me crazy. i have 10.3.9 and it turns out i'm glad i waited for the 10.5 release, but after seeing what it can do, it's making me antsy. (like i said, nerd)
10/1/2007 9:22:35 AM
mac nerds are the worst, too!!!1
10/1/2007 9:36:05 AM
^ i know right, cause we have the most to look forward too
10/1/2007 9:45:07 AM
While 10.5 isn't likely to be the misshapen abomination that Vista turned out to be, it doesn't seem like much to get excited about to me.[Edited on October 1, 2007 at 1:41 PM. Reason : thanks]
10/1/2007 1:35:30 PM
10.5
10/1/2007 1:40:46 PM
so what do you think the chances are they will announce GM on 10/5? that would be very appropriate. even more appropriate since it's also my birthday! [Edited on October 2, 2007 at 10:31 AM. Reason : even though my wife will reap the 10.5 benefits before i will]
10/2/2007 10:30:53 AM
I am betting for a 10/8 release because that's 31 days after I bought my macbook and you only get a free upgrade if it's been 30 days or less.
10/2/2007 2:53:46 PM
^ haha nice.from all i've heard so far... i'd look at Halloween day
10/2/2007 3:32:11 PM
So I'm guessing it will happen near the end of the month since I haven't hear of an official release date yet...
10/11/2007 8:00:56 AM
rumors are the 26thhave they done ANY advertising for this yet? i haven't seen a thing outside of the pre-existing tech world buzz. how far in advance was microsoft advertising for Vista, at least 6 months ahead of launch, right? and Apple's waiting a matter of weeks? what gives
10/11/2007 9:52:22 AM
They don't want to hurt their current Mac sales I guess...even though people get a free upgrade within x amount of days but then someone might say "i'll just wait till the new OS release" if they actively advertised a release date.
10/11/2007 10:07:18 AM
confirmed for the 26th and priced at $129http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/apple-confirms-october-26th-leopard-ship-date-311259.php[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 9:34 AM. Reason : .]

the guy at the Apple store told me the 26th last week but he said he wasn't sure. Glad to see its coming out soon. Definitly will be picking up a copy. Spaces alone looks pretty sweet. Right now I'm using virtuedesktop but its buggy as hell.
10/16/2007 9:40:39 AM
sad thing is the education price, they only cut $13 off.[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 10:28 AM. Reason : ]
10/16/2007 10:28:29 AM
pretty much tax free...
10/16/2007 10:29:40 AM
compared to the $69 price tag for Tiger... $13 off sucks, especially considering that in all reality this is more of an upgrade than a new OS
10/16/2007 11:00:07 AM
true but its more of a new OS in terms of added features and support vs Windows and its new OS releases. $129 isn't all that much for a hefty upgrade.
10/16/2007 11:05:51 AM
So uhh....what kind of copy protection does Apple put on their OS Software?
10/16/2007 11:06:33 AM
I've never had to input a CD key before on any apple software... (iLife Mac OS X etc)
10/16/2007 11:09:07 AM
lets face it, the new features aren't all that "new". they're cool and nice, and i'd shell out $70 for them... but not $100+
10/16/2007 11:09:22 AM
$129 IMO is perfectly fine for an OS upgrade. Better than $479 for a downgrade in Windows.
10/16/2007 11:12:39 AM
last i checked i get versions of windows for free in CSC.i don't even have $129 lol.

EDU price sucks[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 12:02 PM. Reason : .]
10/16/2007 11:58:52 AM
Let me know what price the bookstore is selling student copies for when pricing is confirmed. It's usually lower than the typical educational price.
10/16/2007 1:02:15 PM
^ is what i'm hoping for. they're saying the "institution" price, aka for departments and the university itself, is still $69, which the bookstore could choose to sell it for.anyone on here currently work for the bookstore?[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 1:31 PM. Reason : ]
10/16/2007 1:31:11 PM
if you guys can't afford the difference between $69 and $116 or $116 and $129, then maybe you shouldn't be buying new OSs as soon as they come out....
10/16/2007 1:40:10 PM
^ A weak argument, at best. First of all, Apple's OSes don't decrease in price until the next point release comes out. The deal is Apple has been shaving away EDU discounts for awhile, it's a reasonable gripe, end of story. Apple's retarded to think the demographic most likely to pirate will put away their T1s in favor of paying MORE for an OS.[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 1:52 PM. Reason : .]
10/16/2007 1:52:37 PM
my argument was not that you should wait until Apple decreases the price, which I'm aware they won't. My point is, I don't possibly see how a $70 OS is reasonable but $130 is totally out of reach. If you can't afford the difference from 70 to 130 or 70 to 115, then maybe you shouldn't be buying new OSs at all. If it's something that you really want, and you can make $70 happen, then I'm sure you can make $115 happen somehow. If not, then i suspect that 1) $70 was really too much anyway, and/or 2) you just need to save more money. if you have $70 to drop on it now, then just save and additional $10/week for the next 5 weeks and you'll be able to afford it by the end of November. Surely you can wait until then.
10/16/2007 2:00:09 PM
amazing how many people think it doesn't make sense to want lower prices on something...
10/16/2007 2:06:20 PM
its amazing how many people bitch for the sake of bitching.OMFG!!! Apple is charging money for their products! WTF???[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 2:08 PM. Reason : 1123123]
10/16/2007 2:08:27 PM
^^ ExactlyYou boozers could make the same argument: "Don't gripe over a $13 martini -- you probably couln't afford the $8 one, anyway" The fact that you are apologizing for a price hike is ridiculous. Care to rationalize how "alright" it is for your car insurance / taxes / whatever to spike? Sheesh.[Edited on October 16, 2007 at 2:10 PM. Reason : .]
