Wilmington Police Department

News Release

Sunday, September 23, 2007 - 9:00 a.m.

The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a suspicious death that occurred early Sunday morning.

The body of a 20-year-old man was found in front of a townhouse at 5006 Carleton Place at about 1:30 a.m. The cause of death was not immediately apparent. An autopsy will be performed. (Due to the weekend, we are uncertain when the autopsy will be scheduled).

The victim's identity is being withheld until family members can be notified. He was from out of town and was visiting a friend here this weekend.

Witnesses reported that there had been an altercation involving several men a short time before the body was found. Anyone with information about this case should call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600."

An autopsy will be performed Monday.

WECT interviewed some friends of Flinn, who say they believe the altercation was the catalyst for Flinn's death.

The interview with Flinn's friends can be viewed by clicking the video link to the right of this story."

there are some places in Wilmy that I def. wouldn't want to be at 1:30 AM.
Princess Place FTL.

My car broke down near Sticky Fingers on Market St. at about 8:00 PM one night. I had 4 friendly crackheads pull over and ask if I wanted a ride within 10 minutes.

I go to Wilmington and it really is not that bad around teh beach and college areas. If you start wandering around south Wilmington though is when you get in trouble. I'd say the community in the vicinity of NCSU is a lot sketchier then the community around UNCW.

and if comes out that he was jumped by black kids, im marching. even before the trial!!1

"Autopsy Report Back on ECU Student

Sep 25, 2007 06:24 PM

WILMINGTON-- Police continue to investigate the death of 20-year-old East Carolina University student named Sam Flinn.

Flinn's autopsy report says that he died of bleeding in the brain. Friends say that Flinn jumped in a fight to help a friend. Apparently Flinn took a blow to the head which knocked him unconscious and later killed him.

Police are still waiting on toxicology results.

No charges have been filed.

The following is the official news release from the incident.

Skankin, you are a dumbass for taking it to that next level and practically claiming ownership over some lame ass, incorrect observation. Newspapers often make mistakes, but you're pretty fucking arrogant to assume you actually caught one there.

(I recognize jackleg already pointed this out. But I'd like skankinande to acknowledge he is stupid.)

seriously. I hope if I ever get murdered they don't put a picture of me drinking with the article. It sort of reminds me of that man show bit where they come to your house to clean up the evidence of your degenerate lifestyle in the event of your death.

Sam was good guy. I went to high school and played soccer with him. He always treated people fairly and would have your back if you ever needed it. I know I can speak for everyone that knew him when I say he will be dearly missed. R.I.P Sam Flinn

i went to UNCW and the area that the kid died in is a pretty decent area all around. of course sketchy people can wander in and out but most of the houses around the townhouse complex were owned by older, retired folks, or people with families.

"No Charges in ECU Student Death

WILMINGTON -- No criminal charges will be filed in the death of Samuel Flinn, an ECU student who died in Wilmington last weekend while visiting friends.

The New Hanover County District Attorney's Office and the Wilmington Police Department ruled that the punch that resulted in Flinn's death was out of self defense.

The news was announced at a joint news conference on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

An investigation into what happened Sunday morning reveals that the fight was started by Doug Reece, a friend of Sam Flinn.

Police say Reece approached brothers, Jeffrey and Jaron Collins in the area of the Carleton Apartments and started a fight.

Sam Flinn then entered the fight, threw a punch at Jeffrey Collins, who then punched Flinn in the chin.

"Mr. Collins responded to a non-deadly threat appropriately, he used his fist, not a deadly weapon. The medical examiner agrees that the injuries Samuel Flinn suffered are that of an unremarkable fist fight.," said New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David.

Members of the DA's office and police department say they hope Wednesday's press conference will help stop the rumors that are circulating.

A toxicology report has not been released on Flinn, but witness statements by Doug Reece indicate the 20-year-old had been drinking heavily, smoking marijuana and had taken prescription Xanax pills. "

all the more reason for people not to beat the hell out of each other

just 1 bad hit...thats all it takes

i do, however, wonder how many times the guy who died was hit after he was no longer a threat...

^The newspaper and DA reports state that witness accounts consistently indicated he was not punched after he was knocked down, and the autopsy was consistent with that. Sound like a million dollar shot on a guy whose brain was likely already vulnerable from alcohol/drug consumption.

Carlton Place is most definately NOT a sketch neighborhood. And wilmington beats the hell out of greenville. Downtown around Castle and Dawson, Greenfield Ave is where you most def have to watch your ass, but come on...Carlton place? The only reason the college area is so sketch is because of college kids and crackheads that live at clear run, and some of those complexes.

Sucks for Sam though.
