Since the first thread appears to have been purged. Post here.

Do not ride to the store with your older friend when he goes to pick up beer for you and the rest of the dormrats. ALE agents around here love to follow you home and ticket the person who is over 21 regardless of whether or not there is any evidence that he is buying it for you.

GO!

yeah that is the biggest bunch of crap. I have had friends given tickets for possession b.c they were riding in a car with a guy holding a case in his lap. Granted he was buying the case for someone underage but it was not for any of the people he was riding with. They just all had been riding back from a Hurricanes game and stopped by the Food Dog on the way home. The ALE Pig's** logic was that since there was a case of beer he could divide 6 beers amoung all four car members .

Last time I checked it was not illegal to ride in the car with possession of alcohol with someone underage.

**(i respect police by not ALE gestapo and cops that specifically go out of the way to harass college kids)

Don't do drugs and wander the campus barefoot at night.

Learn how a fucking bus works...

Exit only means do not enter

You dont have to pull the chime at a time point... that makes you look like a serious n00b.

You only have to pull the chime once.

Your ipod must not be so loud that I can tell what emo song you are listening too from across the bus.

You weigh about 1/100 the weight of the bus, do not except it to magically stop for you just because you are blonde and carrying a razorphone.

The buses are not going to run perfectly on time, theres this thing called traffic that can hold them up; this is not Soviet Russia.

Your backpack does not require a seat.

Only pussies take the bus from the gym to the jordan hall stop.

If the driver is kind enough to say hi/have a good day to you, the least you can do is wave or reply back, just because you were in a upper echelon high school clique doesnt mean you can treat everyone below you like untouchables.

Speaking of the shower. . .if you are drunk and taking a shower, make sure that you let someone you trust know that you are going to the shower and ask them to check on you. Otherwise, you will wake up drenched in cold water or with an RA staring down at you.

No shit. One day I was leaving Daniels hall and passed a Fat girl at the bus stop outside of Poe. Sure enough I walk under the train tracks to get to my car located at Coliseum Deck just as the girl was getting off the bus going the same place I was.

How lazy is that she probably could have been in her car and driven off if she just walked the 1/4 mile to DC deck (probably took me like 5 mins from Daniels). No wonder she weighs 200lbs.

^^ scary thing is plenty of thin people do it to, even after coming from the gym!

More tips:

Do not attempt to drive on Dan Allen between 7-9 and 4-6.

Learn how to read a map and find your own classroom.. If you cannot figure out where a room is in a building you are probably better off dropping out of it.

Do not buy a text book until the 2nd week of class.

I'd say 50% of time I never needed the text box and/or the teacher never used it in the curriculum.

The only reasons i'll buy a textbook is...
- Hwk is given from the book
- Professor bases the lecture on book material and sucks on teaching

If you shared any of these from the original thread, give yourself a pat on the back. I did this in 2004.... no way in hell I can track down who said what. Proper credit/reverence given to all of you...

DORM LIFE

Everyone should spend at least their first year on campus. Preferably their first two years. Definitely get out and do stuff, it's when you will meet most of your lifelong college friends.

WEAR SHOWER SHOES

If you're not sure if you'll need to take it to college, don't.

Talk with your new roommate and come up with an agreement on things like who can come over and when...I lucked out with my roomie and if you communicate and respect one another's opinions and things then you should have a good experience too

Decorate your dorm room, the walls are so BLAH...and get a dry erase board for your door so friends and hallmates can leave you a message when you are out

Go to your hall meetings held by the RAs at the beginning of the year. They are supposedly mandatory and if you aren't there, they get pissed and are more likely to turn you in for stupid shit that you do wrong later on. If you are friendly and don't kiss their asses too much, they usually are pretty cool and will let you get away with stuff you aren't supposed to be doing.

If you see someone pass by your door that you don't know, run out and introduce yourself. You will be surprised at how much nicer people in college are then people in high school. Help people move in so you can get to know the people living around you. They will become your good friends for the entire year.

If it isn't too hot, open the window wide and leave the door open so you can hear what is going on outside.

Don't wait until you have absolutely no clean clothes to do laundry. If you are living anywhere on campus, don't wait to do laundry during the weekend, you will never get it done or someone will take your clothes out of washer/dryer and your shit will get messed up. Do it during the week on an afternoon when you have no class.

Don't be that guy (or girl) who tells the RA the sketchy or rule-breaking things that go on. Let it slide. If the RA didn't see it, it didn't happen. End of story.

Buy a desk chair. You will spend countless hours at your desk. Sometimes all day sitting at your desk. Buy something decent or you butt will go numb. Desk chairs with wheels are nice because you can roll from the desk to the fridge, get a drink, and roll back, without ever having to get up.

Play pranks on people in your dorm. That is, if you can take getting pranked yourself. Start a mild prank war. It can get really fun if you can get different floors in a rivalry.

Don't buy a cordless phone. Everyone else has one, and your frequency's will get crossed, and it will be annoying. Just get a long cord for your phone.

Bring a non-electric alarm clock, especially for those awesome 8 am classes freshmen get saddled with. You never know when the power will go out, roommate with trip and pull out your power strips...etc. Cellphones also work for this purpose but make sure that your phone can vibrate while charging.
(I will personally suggest the SonicBoom alarm clock - it has a vibrating disc you can put under the pillow, that shit will startle you awake if you're like me and go deaf in your sleep. Google it, everyone has one these days.)

Lock your room door. Lock it even when you are taking the trash out, sending mail, visiting the restroom, etc. Even at college there are many low-life scumbags who would love to take your stuff. Tell your roommate to lock the door, too.

Get one of those cheap tool sets from wal-mart because eventually you're going to need most of the stuff in there. If not you, then someone will.

ACADEMICS

Wait a day or two to buy your books...look on amazon.com and ebay and barnes & noble's site, they'll all be cheaper than the bookstore, just make sure you get the right version...

If you do buy books, save the CD that comes with it... that can be worth between 5 and 15 extra dollars on buyback, and if the book is an old edition, the CD might be the only thing of value.

Make friends with older people in your major. They know who the good/bad professors are and sometimes have old study materials.

Introduce yourself (at an appropriate time) to your professors, if they can put a face with a name they think you are willing to work hard (even if you don't) and they will remember you come grade time.

Don't be afraid to ask your profs to regrade stuff if you think they graded you lower than you deserve (within reason, of course); the worst they can say is either no, or you keep your same grade despite the regrade.

If you are in a major that you don't want to be in, tell them you want out NOW. Do not let them sign you up for useless classes and tell you "we'll get you out later"

Remember college is NOT to prepare you for a specific career, it is to make you a well rounded individual. Do not choose a major based on it's career paths, choose a major based on YOUR INTEREST.

Take philosophy of religion. At least open yourself to questioning your faith, it will only make it stronger.

Take at least one PE course every semester. Learn something new, find a new pastime.

Learn your way around before classes start. You move in before school starts for a reason.

You will learn things in college. Be prepared; pay attention in class, almost everything the prof says is important. You will never get any busy work in college, the prof will just dismiss class instead.

A lot of first year classes seem like repeats of high school classes (physics, chemistry), but don't be fooled. They go through more material in less time. Don't zone out when you hear something familiar, and think "Oh, I already know this."

Make sure you go to class the first few days, otherwise the prof will drop you from the roll to give your spot to someone else.

Most professors have better things to do than babysit their students through email. Make it a point to introduce yourself to one person in each of your classes...chances are you'll need them for notes or hw help. Get their SN/phone number by the end of the first week.

You don't have to do this immediately, but during your sophomore year (better yet, during your 2nd freshman semester), you should type up a 4 year academic plan. I say type because its MUCH easier to change, your advisor can read it much better, and you'll have a better understanding of what classes have what prereqs and what you learn in each class. You don't have the pick out all of your electives, just put elective for a slot.

Some books are worth saving, most aren't. If you know you are going to be referencing a book often, save it, don't worry about selling it back. If you THINK you might use a book in the future (for the knowledge), sell it back and buy an older version at one of the bookstores.

Take fun courses that still count for your degree requirements.

GO TO CLASS!!! Some professors give high-value quizzes on low attendance days, or extra credit answers for the next test. Sometimes the quiz is at the beginning of class, and asks only your name, section, and the date... then you can leave.

If you're in engineering don't even try to read the books. Just use em for the problems and homework. Any other reading you do will be a large waste of time. Just pay attention in class and take notes, then take notes of your notes.

Don't get out of a major based on one class, esp. in engineering or biology. The first class is usually a bitch. Those are "weed-out" classes. It gets better.

Also, if you're not doing so well in a class, examine what you're doing first. Are you studying as much as you could? Do you do the homework and the readings? Are you understanding the material? Yes there are asshole professors, but don't automatically chalk up bad performance and grades to the prof hating you, especially if you play EverQuest all night and sleep through classes all day.

CAMPUS LIFE

If you don't park exactly where and how you're supposed to, you will get a ticket. No, the ticket nazi does not care why you are parked where you shouldn't be, or for how long it is, you will get a ticket. And chances are, it will be expensive.

Take a LOT of pictures

Get involved with organizations or at least inquire, there are a LOT of them out there, both academic and nonacademic.

DO NOT GO HOME EVERY WEEKEND, YOU MISS OUT ON STUFF!!!

If you want to work, get a work study. Get a job that has 5-20 hours per week (depends on need and academic load). You will appreciate your free time more and the cash flow is invaluable during the semester.

Get involved in something fun...like intramurals or write for a publication on campus, it is a lot easier to get involved than most people think.

Never do anything more than 24 hours a week, except sleep. Even then get healthy amounts because oversleeping is VERY possible and you'll miss out on stuff. Learn the law of diminishing returns. Apply it to sleeping, studying, working, drinking, everything.

Be outside at least 3 hours a day doing something when it is above 65°. When it's above 80° keep a bottle of ice water on your person at all times.

Get involved in athletics. Whether you join a club team of some sort or just go out every couple of days and throw football or frisbee with your friends. You'll get exercise, meet people, relieve stress, and just be in an overall better mood because you're active. Sitting around in your room all day every day will leave your body and mind weary.

Go to all of the home football games if your school has a team, regardless of how good they are. Sit in the student section. Get crunk. If you can't get into the game, tailgate: It's equally fun and you'll be right in the mix of things.

Also go support some sports that don't get a lot of attention, like volleyball or wrestling... those athletes appreciate people coming to see them too.

Open your minds as well as your ears. There's a shitload of stuff you've never seen or heard before; thats OK, open yourself to it and judge for yourself. Never heard of Phish? Check 'em out before you bash 'em.

You'll be around foreigners, gays, lesbians, and freaks all the time. Don't be scared, they're usually nice people.

Upon leaving the dining hall, take an apple to go, and eat it. 'an apple a day'

If you have this whole ego thing from high school, drop it, nobody cares and you'll regret it if you figure this out too late. Chances are, there is somebody on campus that is smarter than you in your class and major, accept it and move on.

You're not in high school anymore, so get out of that high school relationship. The drama envolved with your high school life is the past. As a matter of fact, do you best to stay out of drama, avoid it at all costs. It will do nothing but add more stress that you don't need while trying to study for that exam.

OTHER ASSORTED CRAP

Look into what you have paid for and use every ounce of it. That can include the health center, the gym, library, free legal services, career development, and bus system.

Don't ever lose your ID or room key, replacing those is a major waste of money. Put the ID in your wallet/purse somewhere safe, and buy a school lanyard just for the dorm key. In addition, if you DO lose them, take a couple of days to search EVERYWHERE, and in the meantime just say you forgot your keys at home and that the parents will bring them to you in a couple of days. This will get you into your dorm/apartment a few times if needed... or just shadow your roommate (once they're done with class and stuff). Once you report them lost, a work order is put in, and you can't undo it even if you find the keys the second you hang up.

USE THE GYM. Go and go often, its the best deal for a full gym you will ever have.

Remember that using fake IDs with your info/pic = felony. If you're under 21 go to house parties til you're old enough.

Don't waste your money on frivolous things and have to call home everyday and have your parents put money in your account. Just as you want to be treated as an adult, they want you to live like one - a RESPONSIBLE one. Just because everyone is carrying the Dooney & Burke bags and/or wearing Jordans doesn't mean that you have to go out and buy them and end up starving to death for a few weeks. Only spend money if you know you have it, and make sure you put some to the side for random fees in classes and supplies in the bookstore.

GIRLS: DO NOT travel around campus at night alone, especially if campus is in the middle of a big city...have a guy friend or a group of girls walk with you or call public safety to escort you. Carry mace at all times but don't get casual with it.

Girls:
1. Go to student health and get birth control. If you think you'll forget the pills, get the patch.
2. If you can't go into a store and buy condoms, then you have no business having sex.
3. Don't expect the guy to have a condom.

Guys:
1. Buy condoms.
2. Don't use a condom thats been in your wallet for more than one night. Keep them in the sock or a seldom-used desk drawer.
3. Use the damned things. Neither kids nor STDs are fun things to have in college.

Don't sign up for credit cards just because you get a stupid t-shirt. They pre-approve everyone (so don't feel special at ALL) and if you take it that's the beginning of the end.

Make sure you're doing what YOU need to do to graduate on time. Once you're a junior, stop fucking hanging in the commons. Let the freshmen have their fun. Line up your internships, potential job interviews, etc. This doesn't mean become socially incapable.

And finally...always check and double check everything. Esp. grades and anything really important like that...if someone tells you they'll do something, make sure it gets done...don't just trust them. No one cares about you as much as you think they do; you have to cover your own ass or you'll be one of the kids 3 days before graduation trying to figure out why you don't have the right classes to graduate. This is especially true if you have AP credit.

^ I lifted like 90 percent of this from TWW. There was a thread a while back.... full of good ideas and such. Wait til Noen sees that this thread exists... he had a bunch of NCSU-specific knowledge to drop then and prob. does now.

Get comfy clothes for class, but make sure to look your absolute BEST on the first day of classes. It's fine to be a scrub (or in scrubs) by October or so; anyone you haven't impressed by then, you won't impress.

Rechargeable batteries. Get them, charge them often. You NEVER know.

Guys, get one or two bow ties, as well as some suspenders. Learn how to wear these items... but NEVER together. Unless you're that adventurous, in which case I won't stop you.

Get the weather (in fact, bookmark weather.com and let it run overnight, get the weatherbug desktop tool, anything) every morning before you head out. You don't want to be that dumbass wearing flip-flops/without an umbrella during a torrential downpour, or carrying a sweater on a November day when the temp is actually 75.

For that matter, ladies... flip-flops, crocs, and Uggs NEVER appropriately complete any semblance of a dressy outfit. EVER. Remember this: Flip-flops are worn by beach bums, crocs are worn by gardeners, Uggs are worn by Australian farmers. Get some real shoes that you're comfy in for those occasions.

Finally.... get a robe. You never know when somebody will pull the fire alert at 4am, having a robe helps make that situation a little less awkward.
