ALONE!http://www.wral.com/news/local/blogpost/1802170/Sorry if this is [old]
9/13/2007 8:41:19 AM
Sorry to say, but it's too late now. It's pretty much an open lot.
9/13/2007 8:57:56 AM
thats why it say "the last vestiges of riddick." The old fieldhouse is s lated to be torn down in 08 or 09
9/13/2007 9:13:50 AM
i say, save it. tear it down and rebuild it as a historic site near carter finley... or make it a museum for how great this school used to be
9/13/2007 9:17:51 AM
how are they going to build a parking deck in that small area?
9/13/2007 9:36:27 AM
^it's not going to be just where that building was, but also a good bit of that old parking lot. Look at the "North, Central, South Campus" maphttp://www.ncsu.edu/facilities/maps_planning/large/index.htm
9/13/2007 11:58:57 AM
oh the memories of walking through the old stadium (when it was a lot, but still have the bleachers) to class.twas the good ole days
9/13/2007 12:26:44 PM
out with the old in with the new. Its time to make new history instead of dwelling on how great State used to be.
9/13/2007 12:33:44 PM
fuck that. Riddick was "the" center of the university in the olden dayssomething that was mentioned on Pack Pride: Take something from the Riddick Ruins and put that in the place of the tiny wolf statue in the Cave where the team runs out of before football gamesim pretty sad to see that last of Riddick removed
9/13/2007 12:44:51 PM
^^while i tend to agree, a parking deck is not making cool new history... unless ncsu forms a legendary go kart team that races to the top of the deck every saturday. i think some part of it (like the fieldhouse) should stay.[Edited on September 13, 2007 at 12:47 PM. Reason : .]
9/13/2007 12:46:29 PM
I'm talking about athletics program. They have a new much better stadium which i'm sure no ones complaining about and would rather still be in Riddick. So its about time the team makes positive history and not negative history.I guess i'm not used to the fact that 100 year old building is something to be impressed by.[Edited on September 13, 2007 at 1:20 PM. Reason : fda]
9/13/2007 1:20:19 PM
there is a huge math and stats building going where the old stadium used to bethe skeleton is already up
9/13/2007 1:41:57 PM
so sad *tear
9/13/2007 1:45:32 PM
whatever, if we saved everything historic then the world would be completely covered in ramshackle crumbling ruins
9/13/2007 3:57:17 PM
Or it'd look a little bit like the classy parts of europe, and it'd be just as expensive.
9/13/2007 6:28:40 PM
i heard "older" parts of centennial are already falling apart
9/13/2007 6:47:32 PM
That's what happens when the building contracts all go to the lowest bidder...
9/13/2007 6:51:06 PM
^yeah, the State students
9/13/2007 7:24:05 PM
Thompson Theatre:You're next on "tear down the most historic buildings on campus!"
9/13/2007 8:34:30 PM
save harrelson!
9/13/2007 8:55:57 PM
^^ yeah i am kind of worried about thompsonthe track record is not greattear down zoology building, erect mann (box)tear down YMCA, erect kamphoefner (box)tear down field house, erect parking decktear down riddick stadium, erect math and stat (box. . . BUT IN THE SHAPE OF AN "L" !!1)tear down trees, put up BTEC (box with inexplicably tiny windows)=who doesn't look back fondly on those halcyon days at business park university?it is like going to school at freaking initech
9/13/2007 9:10:16 PM
At least Kamphoefner is a moderately interesting box.
9/13/2007 9:45:02 PM
As far as I know, the plans for Thompson include generally not fucking with the front part of the building, though I think they may add on to the back. I predict the finished product will resemble Leazar--nicely restored early 20th century building with an odd, quasi-futuristic addition that doesn't match. At least with Leazar the additions are small and not visible from the front.
9/13/2007 10:25:54 PM
I walk through the field house nearly every day This is sad.
9/14/2007 12:33:48 AM
this does not phase me at all...i could care less about some old ass unused stadium at ncsu
9/14/2007 1:02:19 AM
9/14/2007 1:25:00 AM
For once I agree with DNL.
9/14/2007 7:17:54 AM
The idea of reusing the building to house NC State's football history isn't a bad one. The house wouldn't actually have to be torn apart and rebuilt either, it could be moved intact (where's the civil engineers when you need them?)
9/14/2007 8:06:37 AM
NC State's football history? Dude, we've always sucked!
9/14/2007 9:16:30 AM
Riddick Stadium (opened 1907) was a former college football stadium, home to the North Carolina State University Wolfpack football team. The stadium was named after Wallace Carl Riddick, N.C. State football coach during the 1898-1899 seasons. The Wolfpack baseball team also played its home games in the stadium. The stadium initially had only wooden bleachers on the sidelines, but over the years concrete bleachers were built and a fieldhouse was erected behind the south endzone. After the completion of Carter Stadium (now Carter-Finley Stadium) the east stands and the field were replaced by a parking lot and the fieldhouse was made into the campus police station. The west stands remained and served a number of functions through the years, including a residence hall in the 1940s and the home of the University Planning office until their demolition in the summer of 2005. The former fieldhouse is now empty as well. A new academic building is being constructed on the site. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riddick_Stadium"RIP
9/14/2007 10:10:49 AM
now when they decided to build Carter Stadium, did they contemplate expanding riddick? I know it's in the middle of campus, but was that an option on the table?
9/14/2007 10:46:13 AM
the article states riddick had issues and attendance was so low we tried to play our games on the road. expanding would have been ridiculous.
9/14/2007 1:16:38 PM
^^The issue would have been where exactly to expand, and where to put the parking. I guess parking might not have been as much of an issue, since neither Derr track nor Talley existed at the time, but expanding the stadium to a decent (for the 60's) size probably would have required the demolition of Syme, the YMCA building, the Morris building, the Laundry building, and possibly the steam plant for there to be sufficient space. That's a LOT of collateral damage.
9/14/2007 1:27:57 PM
So basically, you want to save a building because someone used to play football games there?Come'on now, that's just ridiculous.
9/14/2007 2:16:08 PM
Does anyone know why they chose the site where Carter-Finley is now? I wonder if they considered putting a new stadium over where the track is.
9/14/2007 2:30:48 PM
SAVE THE HISTORIC BASEBALL FIELD! DON'T LET THESE CORRUPT ADMINISTRATORS TEAR IT DOWN TO BUILD SOME REDNECK RUGBY STADIUM! FOOTBALL'S JUST A PASSING FAD ANYWAY!The photo is from 1910, by the way. After football caught on a few years later, a new set of wooden grand stands were built sometime before 1923(the outfield of the baseball field became riddick field). The first WPA project on campus was the construction of the north side concrete stadium in 1933, finishing with the field house in 1938.After baseball was evicted, it moved to a field south of Thompson Gym(later Theater), where the colliseum parking deck sits today. I don't know when baseball moved to the field behind Lee dorm.[Edited on September 14, 2007 at 2:35 PM. Reason : Moving the football stadium off campus was smart, as anyone who's been to Keenan can attest.]

9/14/2007 5:38:13 PM
post more old pics
9/14/2007 5:50:27 PM
On that NC State Master Plan map, what are the hundreds of buildings they've added to centennial? How about that huge building south of Lee?
9/14/2007 9:29:37 PM
The concrete bleachers were the only bit of character the campus had
9/14/2007 9:45:45 PM
9/14/2007 10:39:31 PM
9/14/2007 10:44:08 PM
The fieldhouse is only 70 years old.
9/14/2007 10:55:16 PM
reroute the railroad tracks!
9/15/2007 2:35:57 AM
9/15/2007 5:35:28 PM
100 years is not that much.Anyway, down with the stadium up with math.I think it sends a good message. Next convert Carter Finley into class rooms and tear down the gym, put in a parking lot there as well.
9/15/2007 9:40:23 PM
they need a parking deck beside the gym.
9/16/2007 8:33:16 PM
because there's tons of room for a parking deck there
