Apple event tomorrow, as you all probably already know. Here's my wishlist for the new iPod:-Full screen, touch interface ala iPhone (no more scroll wheel??!?)-Flash memory (32GB at least, plz)-Wifi (Some definite advantages to this for Apple: people buying iTunes directly from the iPod=more impulse buys)-All new interface w/CoverFlowIf it does have Wifi, I just hope it comes packin' Safari. I want a pocket web-access device that doesn't suck (ie is a phone) damnit! If it's got all of these, I'm buying one right away and having it engraved with "Steve Jobs is my daddy" on the back. For every 1 of these features that is missing, it will take me approximately 1 minute longer to pull the trigger.

isn't the scroll wheel kinda signature to an ipod?i doubt their gonna drop that.[Edited on September 4, 2007 at 2:41 PM. Reason : ei]

He didn't say "Safari for windows"
9/4/2007 2:43:30 PM
I think Safari is plenty fine for most applications, Stein. We don't all need to be able to browse the web from a terminal line. The scroll wheel might be 'virtual' in this iteration?
9/4/2007 2:44:33 PM
9/4/2007 2:45:17 PM
This might actually be enough to get me to buy an apple product.
9/4/2007 2:46:56 PM
unfortunately, I'm afraid it won't be rockin' a web browser... I think that definitely treads on the iPhone's territory too much for their comfort. Oh well, a man can dream.
9/4/2007 2:48:07 PM
If it's got wifi access and no web browser then it will be a matter of days before it actually gets a web browser via other means.
9/4/2007 3:01:15 PM
^^^ because it has (had?) a huge security hole that allows free open access to whatever device it's used on.
9/4/2007 3:01:31 PM
what browser would you suggest, Stein, IE? lol...Safari is a great browser, especially on Mac
9/4/2007 3:05:43 PM
whatever overcomplicated browser the ubernerds are all using nowadays, undoubtedly. Cuz, you know, Safari isn't 'powerful' enough.SkankinMonky: I guess you've got a point, especially if it's running OSX redux like the iPhone. Come to think of it, that's a pretty exciting prospect as far as homebrew goes (emulators, etc etc).

http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20070903PD203.htmlThis is most likely what I've been waiting for for over a year when it comes to why I've been putting off buying an ipod. For me it will come down to price. If I can get an iphone minus the phone with 16 or 32 GB of flash for around $300 I'll bite. Any more than that and I'll start to feel silly spending that much money and not getting an iphone. Assuming that's the only difference. They list Increased storage capacity as a feature for the new nano. If I can get 16GB on that for around $200 that will be awfully tempting. Somehow I have my doubts.Bottom line is, I'm pretty sure I'll finally be getting an ipod after tomorrow. I'm still interested to see the specifics on the pricing and features to figure out which one.]
9/4/2007 3:25:58 PM
but you can't grope + lick the nano like you can the (supposed) full-screen iPod.
9/4/2007 3:26:53 PM
+1 for the nano as far as I'm concerned.

^^It's not a standalone ipod, though. It's a completely different product.
9/4/2007 4:26:31 PM
A touchscreen over a damn click wheel is almost guaranteed in my opinion. The hardware has already been developed with the iPhone and I see no reason why they would do it any other way.[Edited on September 4, 2007 at 4:33 PM. Reason : ^^ what doesn't it render properly? Every page I've viewed is fine and I use it constantly]
9/4/2007 4:32:55 PM
I would think if the ipod where to dramatically change in appearance, something would've leaked about it.
9/4/2007 4:51:23 PM
I have serious doubts that the new iPod will essentially be an iPhone minus the phone part. I think Apple is going to want to keep the iPod and iPhone as 2 distinct products, and not have them competing against each other. Expect a touch wheel interface similar to the previous models, more storage, and some minor aesthetic improvements.[Edited on September 4, 2007 at 4:59 PM. Reason : :]

Practically every expert, "insider", and rumor mill say one thing.Shrike from the wolf web says another.I know who I'm gonna believe.
9/4/2007 5:17:49 PM
I saw a comment on another site that pointed out that the ipod accounts for several million units a year vs 200K iphones. Profit is profit. AT&T and Apple are in bed together on the iphone, Apple alone makes money on the iPod. Why not make it iphone like?
9/4/2007 5:26:22 PM
^ Haha, it's not that simple.
9/4/2007 5:41:11 PM
9/4/2007 5:51:24 PM
I don't think we'll see touchscreen iPods this revision.I think we'll just see a revised UI and smaller or differently oriented iPods with a coverflow browser as well.
9/4/2007 6:01:41 PM
I jumped boats to the Creative Zen when I saw the features they packed into the Vision M (namely, support for practically every video file format). If Apple can do that this time around, that would score some points in my book.
9/4/2007 6:17:10 PM
^ It's not going to happen.

flash>hddthe one thing that keeps me from buying an ipod. (though i have a nano for the wife).i prefer a smaller physical size, faster load times, transfer times, and less risk for damage over a large heavy hdd based player anyday.flash based 32gb ipod ftwbtw, thinksecret hardly ever gets it wrong:http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0709preipod.html

I'm not going to buy it until it comes in brown.

The one website I went to w/my iPhone that it didn't render quite right was http://www.jeep.com (I saw a hideous looking wrangler parked in front of Waraji, and wanted to read up on it till my friend got there). It didn't handle frames/scrolling perfectly. That said, the device/implementation is leaps and bounds better than ANY other mobile device has come close to. I'm buying another one for my girlfriend tomorrow...AhmetPS: The fact that I may choose to browse on the iPhone when my laptop is on the desk next to me, says a lot about it's usability.

Sounds like the OP wants an iPhone sans the Phone and with a lot more storage. I couldn't agree more. We're essentially talking about a widescreen, touchscreen iPod, and now that Apple has suckered ppl w/ the phones, it's time for those happy with their current phone to get a similar device that doesn't talk. And oh yeah, shameless plug for finding out what's new the moment it happens:http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/steve-jobs-live-apples-the-beat-goes-on-special-event/
