The Whole Foods has cooking classes.

My wife got me a some classes at this place in Durham: http://chezbaygourmet.com/I think it was 3 classes for $100. It was pretty fun and I learned enough to get my money's worth. It was little things like being shown exactly when pasta dough was done being kneaded (took a lot more than I had ever done before, which explains a lot of my failures at making fresh pasta in the past). The classes are about 12-14 people if I remember correctly and they are one of the few cooking classes that actually let you cook (I was surprised at how few let you do any prep/cooking, apparently liability issues).

http://www.foodnetwork.comMy mom gets recipes off of there all the time and gave me a bunch to do, which could help you with getting started.
9/5/2007 8:37:15 AM
I'll teach you if you pay me and buy the food.
9/5/2007 9:14:46 AM
I just learn as I go. If I eat something some time I'll just think "Hey that was good. I'm gonna look up the recipe." Soon after, I try it out and it is added to my arsenal of culinary skills.
9/5/2007 10:25:07 AM
Depends on where you are at. There is one of these just down the road from me and they are pretty good at what they do. http://www.vikingcookingschool.com/hc-cgi-bin/hc?templ=new_vcs/home.html

^ditto. You can look down a restaurant menu a lot of times and just remember the name of the dish and there is bound to be a good recipe for it online somewhere. Thats how I come up with a lot of ideas for my meals
9/5/2007 10:29:29 AM
I think you guys are overlooking the fact that some people know nothing about cooking. Finding recipes doesn't necessarily help if you just read them and think "WTF does 'julienne' mean?" Not that Jen is necessarily one of those people, but there are a lot of them.
9/5/2007 10:31:31 AM
A lot of cooking terms you could just look up online and figure out what they mean. But yea I do agree that some learn better hands on
9/5/2007 10:35:25 AM
Jen, find a guy willing ot cook for you.

Just because she can't spell it doesn't mean she doesn't know what it means. I like giving people the benefit of the doubt.
9/5/2007 10:38:47 AM
I don't know what julienne means. I cook just fine.
9/5/2007 11:48:46 AM
i just bought a book and will learn from there. I highly recommend it.http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Cooking-Need-Cook-Quickly/dp/1930603002/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-2070891-6536035?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189026428&sr=8-1

hahai dont want a cookbook. I know some of the basics but for me its more a timing issue. Me and a friend want to take it together, we thought it would be fun. Nothing too basic cuz we arn't total retards in the kitchen but nothing to fancy either or overly educational too. Im also uncomfortable cuz nothing i can make can possably compaire to my mothers cooking, mom's like fuckin emeril in the kitchen.

Titina at Capri Flavors does a fun class where you learn how to prepare an entire meal and then eat it. http://www.capriflavors.com/class_schedule.php It's a little pricey but a fun special occasion type thing.
9/5/2007 8:16:50 PM
Man, i should start teaching this shit.
9/5/2007 9:35:36 PM
easy. if you cant cook, go out to eat.
9/5/2007 10:13:54 PM
^cause thats cheap and healthy
9/6/2007 1:30:29 AM
I already know how to make everything I need to know how to make. I don't eat for enjoyment, I eat because it's necessary. The quicker, healthier, and easier it is the better. Because of this I eat a rather bland diet, but that's fine with me. The appeal of learning how to make lobster bisque and creme broule has never appealed to me. Don't get me wrong, it'd be cool to know how to do and it's impressive to see what a good cook can do, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing I would pay to learn.
9/6/2007 2:22:21 AM
my advice is not to jump the gun on fancy shitlearn to cook basic, good mealsand go fancy from there

I'm with Ian (MetalRed). I need to start doing this shit for money. Get a good kitchen and teach classes 4 nights a week, 10 people per class, $30/person... gross $1200/week... that's much better than i get paid now.Ian, we need to set this plan in motion.
9/7/2007 3:40:55 AM
I agree.
