In need of some basic, inexpensive, but still reliable webhosting for a small website and a bulletin board/forum. I seem to have made this thread once before many months (years?) ago and got some responsed but I cant remember them and they may not be accurate anymore.... anyway thanks for any help.

mellocj. he hooked me up/helped me out with our company site.

I use site5 and I'm happy. I know others who use powweb who are also happy. IMO Dreamhost has uptime issues. What do you anticipate your traffic to be like and what's your budget?
8/26/2007 6:45:04 PM
ive been using 1and1, no problems and cheap as hell
8/26/2007 7:02:42 PM
^^ budget is not determined yet, not high though- how is traffic measured?
8/26/2007 7:11:01 PM
in gigs
8/26/2007 7:11:26 PM
for like $5 a month with 1and1 you get 2,500 GB of bandwidth..3 domains, 2500 email accounts, etc..
8/26/2007 7:14:45 PM
and i can run vbulletin over there no problems?
8/26/2007 7:49:06 PM
yea I'm doing it now..as long as your package has sql database support then you're good (aka the $4.99 for 3 months then $9.99 a month one)
8/26/2007 8:02:58 PM
mellocjhttp://www.tqhosting.comBest hosting ever.

When considering what your traffic is going to be like you need to look at not only the total volume of data you'll be moving, but how many visitors you'll have at any given time and what they'll be doing. You could have unlimited data volume transfer limits, but that won't help you if your host can't handle more than 5 people at once visiting your site.

mellocjhell...he hosts TWW
8/27/2007 12:12:58 AM

TQ was great, I used them for about a year. mellocj was always on top of things though and always offered probably the BEST customer service I've had from ANY provider. He was always there to help fix things and catered to even my smallest requests, all in a very timely manner. That said... the server I was on had a month or so of flaky service (only about ~30min downtime per day on TQ) and I needed more than 95% uptime, so I went with LunarPages http://www.lunarpages.com/ and they've been great thus far and I have never ever had to worry about downtime. But of course I had to pay for it. By far though TQ is the best you can get for the money, but if you need 99.99% uptime go with a larger company.Kinda depends on what you're looking for.[Edited on August 27, 2007 at 11:21 AM. OKAY SOgot my stuff straight through 1and1... but their "website builder" program is terrible. i mean horrrrrrrrible.what can i use instead? a local editor to set up my webpages, and then FTP them up to my webspace??? help please, its been years since i have messed with this sort of thing. i mean ages.
9/3/2007 9:18:28 PM
notepad + ftp = websitesomeone with one and one experience can help more, but that is the basic idea...
9/3/2007 9:20:37 PM
i vote mellocj & TQ as well.
9/4/2007 2:59:30 AM
^^^ frontpage makes it pretty easy.. or yeah you can FTP them up. For uploading all the files for your forum or whatever it was you were wanting to do FTP is your best bet. Also, I agree their website builder is utter bullshit..but I only used it once so kinda forgot about that.

thanks for the good words guys. my company is not selling shared hosting anymore so i would recommend something like bluehost or lunarpages OR checkout routhost.com - they are on the tqhosting network and have good packages starting at $2.95/mobut if anyone needs a hookup for a vps, co-lo, dedicated, etc, or just help getting pointed in the right direction let me know. I also use 1and1
10/2/2007 9:25:41 AM

10/2/2007 10:33:19 AM
i used to use site5 until i got my own colo'd servers
10/2/2007 10:36:59 AM
How hard/often does 1and1 come down on high bandwidth usage?I.E. Are they going to take a look at a large file that gets downloaded a lot? What's the policy/penalties on pirated software?I'm not looking to start a warez site or anything, I just want to know the risks of sharing some software with a small circle of friends.
10/2/2007 10:55:09 AM
i've been looking at mediatemple because of their whole grid server system. sounds pretty nice

10/2/2007 12:54:39 PM
ill figure it out tomorrow. it wont go live until 24 hrs anyway.thx
10/2/2007 1:11:43 PM
I cant get my FTP shit straight with 1and1
10/2/2007 2:14:00 PM
What's the problem
10/2/2007 2:28:55 PM
1and1 should have given you a temporary url to use until the domain name goes live ... at the very least you should have ftp instructions that don't rely on your domain name.
10/2/2007 2:38:43 PM
just in case the obvious is being overlooked here, if you didn't register the domain with 1and1 you will have to update the DNS with the place you registered your domain...
10/2/2007 2:44:28 PM
bingo.domain is live and I ftp'd to it successfully in windows explorer.my site is up and running.
