I registered for the PS 320:02 W 1:30-4:15 class on wednesday afternoon after the first class had already met for the first time. I sent the prof an email asking what I need to do to catch up, he emails me the assignment along with the syllabus and says to read it carefully. i'm looking at the attendance policy today and see that it says this:
Quote :
"more than one missed class under any circumstances, or any unexcused absence, will result in a letter grade reduction in your final course grade"

i'm thinking that's pretty outrageous so i check the university policy:
Quote :
"Instructors may use reasonable academic penalties commensurate with the importance of the work missed because of unexcused absences"

http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.3.php
This is the second class i've taken with a policy like this, and i think it's definately unreasonable that i can't make above a B just because i added late.
I was hoping maybe someone who works in Registration & Records or someone who had a similar situation can offer advice on how i can get this attendance policy over-ruled.

Most don't count attendance the first few days of class anyway, just talk to him about it, its not hard. Also if the class only meets once per week, I think it is reasonable to only allow one absence.

Just fucking go to class, you douche bag.

Oh, wait. I'm sorry. God forbid your parents to pay for an education that actually requires more of their child than sleeping in, drinking beer, and jerking off.

He probably won't take off for you registering late, that would be unheard of. But I agree, you should just go talk to him.

I think you may be jumping the gun if he didn't say that this was going to count against you. Most profs. aren't going to count the days before you were registered as an absence. Ask him about it... nobody here knows if he is going to count this against you are not. It may be the case that you talk to him, he laughs and says he never intended to count it against you.

^ there are are lot more reasons for not going to class than what you listed, some of them very valid. Not to mention she's talking about a class meeting she missed because she wasn't actually enrolled in the class yet. And how do you know who pays for her education? You assume far too much.

As far as I'm concerned; If you you can show that you've mastered the material attendance shouldn't be required other than to prove mastery. But I don't make the rules.

Yeah it is stupid to think that the class before you added it will be counted in attendance for you.

You can't miss something if it doesn't exist. Common sense, folks.

Just ask him to confirm. If he says yes you have an absence, then he deserves to be shot in the face.

AND BTW

ONE DOES NOT EQUAL MORE THAN ONE. EVEN IF IT COUNTS, YOU HAVE ONE ABSENCE, NOT MORE THAN ONE.

NO ONE CAUGHT THAT? JESUS PEOPLE, ARITHMETIC.

"definately [sic] unreasonable"

(1) Your spelling is definitely unreasonable; obviously, you need to go to class at every opportunity. And (2) on the first day of class you were already concerned about attendance? Not a good beginning for the semester.

No one caught these?

actually i'm paying my way through college. and thanks for assuming thats what i do all day

thanks, he assumes that i'm a guy also.

"or any unexcused absence"

thats the part i was concerned about. only 1 unexcused absence = a letter grade off
and its possible he would mark me absent for the 1st day if he tallies attendance at the end of the semester.
i dropped the class and sent him an email explaining that i disagree with his attendance policy and that i don't think it complies with the university regulations of "reasonable academic penalties"
i'd rather be safe than have to worry about if that day counted against me.

^^Thats a great idea. Start arguing with him before you've been to class.

That absence would not have counted if you would have talked with him face to face rather then getting your panties in a bunch and dropping the class.

In addition, missing a once a week class is essentially like missing 3 class periods. I agree the policy is pretty unreasonable, but a professor can find any way to dock you points if they feel like it (policies, subjective grading, etc.

WTF???? DID I READ THAT CORRECTLY????

So, instead of talking to him and confirming it with him, you

1) make a thread here, as if we are his PAs.
2) then you drop the class WITHOUT TALKING TO HIM... I mean, Jesus, it is not like the drop deadline is tomorrow or something...???

So you couldn't wait to drop it until you had talked to him?

Well that just shows what the real reason is for you abruptly and illogically dropping:

Quote :
"i'd rather be safe than have to worry about if that day counted against me i end up being absent for no reason late in the semester.[/"

And again, WTF is this "worry about" shit????

Have you not a mouth and legs? Could you not go see him and ask him, instead of losing weight, getting cancer, and high blood pressure by worrying about it?
