Has anyone taken PHI 340 online with Austin?
Any paper for this class? How hard is this class?
Do I need to read a lot for this class?

some people seem to have a really hard time with this class, and some don't. basically, it depends on how well you can recognize the nuances between the possible answers on the tests.

This class seems to have a disproportional amount of threats devoted to it.

haha i "took" this class awhile ago. I crossed it off my schedule after the first day and always forgot i had it. It's kinda a shame his personality is wasted on a class with no attendance policy bc he was hilarious the one time i ever went.

I stand by my review.

Quote :
"course : PHI 340
course rating : 1 - Bad
course comments : The only material is the professor's stupid ramblings. First test was about if Astrology, Acupuncture, etc. are "pseudosciences". Totally pointless. The second test was his weak arguments that science and religion are the same thing. He only starts to make sense at the end of the year, when he gets to dualism and determinism, but it still doesn't have material I didn't learn better in PHI 205.

class : Spring 2005 section 001
grade received : B
class rating : 2 - Average
class comments : The best part of the class is that it's very LOW COMMITMENT for a 3 credit-hour class. You never have to go to class, everything's online, and all tests are open-book. However, it's shit for a Philosophy course. Nothing but multiple-choice tests full of trick questions where the "right" answers are what he wants to hear. Fortunately, there is a huge curve. A 60 is a B-, for example.

instructor : Austin
instructor rating : 0 - Horrible
instructor comments : I think he's an idiot and a prick. If he spent as much time learning to make a real argument as much as he does adding pictures and fluff to his web pages, this might be a good course. "

nah, I took the actual on-campus class, but a friend took it through distance ed while on a co-op and said it wasn't that bad. The class is seriously a joke as long as you keep up with the readings.

You wont ever really understand the material. For tests you just Ctrl + F through the course readings, same with the micro-quiz you take every week. I got pretty crappy grades on most tests, a decent grade on the final, 6/10 microquizzes right, and got like a B.

That describes ANY class though.

If you actually do the readings, you should get an A.

If you half-ass the readings, or just ignore them completely, you'll get a B or a C.

I couldn't force myself to do the reads, they made me want to kill myself. I think I got a C by never going to class and not doing the readings. Enough to get my STS requirement and that's enough.
