They do offer it at WTCC. You need to find the NCSU course equivalents page, or the comm college equivalency PDF, to find the institution course number that's equivalent to calc at NCSU.[Edited on August 22, 2007 at 9:51 AM. Reason : lsk]

The Egyptians did it without freakin calculators. What's your excuse?
8/22/2007 10:06:21 AM
the egyptians also couldn't do long division
8/22/2007 10:09:59 AM
I will take calculus over long division any day.

haha, try taking a square root by hand...

I took MA 121 Elements of Calc through distance ed. here at ncsu this summer, so you can probably go that route.

you should not take a technical course like this online - especially with your apparent intelligence level

121 & 131 are both available on DVD. 121 was an absolute cakewalk, 4 take home tests and the final on campus. Plus Dr. Lada is hilarious. He speaks so slowly and clearly that you can watch the DVDs on 2x and still understand everything he says.

I wish they would offer MA 132 online. I still have to take that one and I just haven't gotten around to it. Does anyone know what the class is like?
8/22/2007 12:35:57 PM
I took MA 141 and 241 through DE with Griggs and I'm taking 242 this semester with Norris online. Its not that hard at all, you just have to discipline yourself.

i had ma 141 and 241 online with griggs. easy class, but it's almost impossible to get a hold of griggs.

just had my first class today with griggs for a math/stat class, he doesnt seem like a great teacher to me, he may know his stuff but as far as teaching it, it seems poor

Perhaps your opinion will change by the end of the course...most of Dr. Griggs' students say that he is an excellent instructor.

Dr. Griggs is one of the best math teachers i've had at state

Okay, first, about MA 132, you pretty much don't have to go to class. So if you're taking NCSU classes already, you can add the class. I went the first week, but it was a FUCKING WASTE.Second, I'm ambrosia1231's old roommate. So here's my 'story'.I was taking MA 231, and my exam was in the second week of exams. I'm diabetic, and got sick over that weekend. Monday morning, when I had my exam, I went to Student Health, got a note and examination, and emailed my TA when I got back.He told me that since it was already late into the exam time, he'd give me an IN and I could make it up in the fall.In the fall, I tried emailing the TA, to no avail. I then began emailing Dr. Griggs, b/c I had no idea what happened to the TA. I emailed and called him multiple times that semester. But my schedule was completely on Centennial campus, so the only time I could even make it to Harrelson was after 5pm.So in the spring, after watching my IN (and A average in the MA 231 class) turn into an F, I finally had an opportunity to go to his office. I had a spanish class in Harrelson, and stopped by his office many different times before the secretary offered to set up an appointment with him. Finally had the appt, and he basically said "Oh, your TA didn't leave me any papers, so I ignored your emails." He said he had my final exam somewhere on his desk at one point and time but could not find it anymore. He finally told me to contact one of the professors teaching MA 231 that semester, and take their final at the end of the semester.(My TA had moved to Greensboro, that's why I couldn't get in touch with him, etc etc.)I ended up with an A for the final grade. Griggs was just going to use the exam grade for my final grade, b/c he did not have any test grades from when I took the class. But during the course of that spring semester, he finally tracked down the TA and got my test grades.

Griggs is one of the most available professors around, you could have avoided much of this trouble by finding time to go and talk to him in person. Why in the world did you let it go for so long? Anyway, it sounds like your TA was more to blame then Dr. Griggs. For all he knew you were just trying to hustle him.
8/23/2007 12:41:42 AM
I let it go on so long because I couldn't get in touch with him. The times in the fall semester when I got over to Harrelson, he has nowhere to be found. That whole semester was one of my craziest with my Textile classes, and I literally couldn't get over there till after he had left, on most days.I was also a little perturbed he couldn't have just shot me an email back to at least acknowledge he had gotten any of them. I know it's mostly my fault, but it was just very annoying to not have any reciprocated form of communication. But, I realized that there are just some faculty that require you to make a more concerted effort for them to pay you any attention. I was overall pleased with the results, though... I was able to take the exam with the other professor at a time when my exam schedule wasn't really heavy (instead of whenever Griggs/whoever decided), and I got a good grade. I had a lot of trouble with Calc I (some trouble with the understanding of it - seemed so very foreign to me - and some general slackass trouble), and in Calc II, I did a lot better, with study skills and my comprehension. So I wanted to make sure I got a good grade that time around!

take griggs for calc just because of this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko7EGXFOaQ0&mode=related&search=[Edited on August 23, 2007 at 3:38 AM. Reason : .]

I sometimes have to wait to see him since he is in charge of a lot of stuff, but his door is usually open and he is usually talking to somebody about something, if he's gone it's probably lunch or teaching, either way if you camp out there a little while he'll be back just about everyday I've been, and I'm talking about more than a dozen visits. Sorry you guys got unlucky.
