http://youtube.com/watch?v=8xJeuJj6TDcI read an article on this today. Absolutely disgusting. I really hope the bad press continues and our government will flex it's muscles on this one.Volz was almost killed by a mob the day he was arrested. The police paraded him though town in the back of a truck as part of the public pre-trial (Duke LAX, anyone?). When a mob of people carrying sticks and machetes gathered around the police station the police took him out the front door to an awaiting truck to transport him to another prison. When the crowd started hurling stones all of the policemen except for one fled and the truck that was waiting took off. They literally ran down the street, Volz in handcuffs, and barricaded themselves inside a gymnasium. They were able to move into another building and escape the mob.The Reagan administration was openly hostile towards the Sandinista party and the Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega. Ortega lost his presidency in the 1990 election and was out of office until being re-elected in November 2006. During that 16 year period there was a small surge of Americans relocating to Nicaragua as beachfront properties were cheap by comparison to their neighbors in Costa Rica. It seems as if the regained power of the Sandinistas has brought anti-American sentiment to the surface again. It's not a place I would want to visit anytime soon.

Beaten in custody and wrongfully convicted?Absolutely disgusting! That never happens to white people here!
8/20/2007 4:03:06 AM
The international standard on prisoner treatment has been lowered.
8/20/2007 9:18:36 AM
^ WTF are you talking about?
8/20/2007 9:20:12 AM
^ Something to do with chicken wire, beach front property, dogs, and nekkid people I think.
8/20/2007 9:49:51 AM
we need to drop a bomb on those wetbacks and show them that we're the only ones who can be mistreating prisoners in this got-damn hemisphere, okay?monroe doctrine FTW
8/20/2007 10:01:44 AM
Yes, definitely. Mistreated prisoners were completely unheard before the War on Terror.
8/20/2007 10:08:40 AM
true. the only difference is, we dont have moral ground to stand on when complaining about it any more.
8/20/2007 1:48:48 PM
I don't think we had moral ground to stand on in the first place. We have history in Nicaragua (and other places) that pre-dates Bush. Also, it's not like the Nicaraguan judiciary is some sort of paragon or Nicaragua is a bastion of human rights. I would be suprised if Volz's treatment varied significantly from that accorded to native Nicaraguans.

My bad. It's ok since he is mostly white. Nevermind him being an American citizen or a human being.
8/20/2007 5:42:06 PM
What's happened to him appears to be terrible and awful and horrific and completely unjust. But that's what happens to people here in the US, too--US citizens and non-citizens...why should our government "flex it's muscle" over a country doing the same thing we do? There's only one answer to that. It's cause we're the United States of America, and we do what we want!
8/20/2007 6:02:01 PM
Did any of the people in this thread even read or watch what has happened to him? How can you say the US treats it's prisoners the same way? You're a fucking idiot if you think that is the case. Even if it were, does that in ANY WAY justify what has happened to him? For fuck's sake some of you shits need to get a clue.
8/20/2007 6:11:42 PM
^AHA, so you basically want this thread to be all of us posting, "Oh, man, that sucks. That's terrible! How disgusting!" Without a single mention that similar shit goes down in the US?
8/20/2007 6:16:31 PM
REMEMBER EVERYONE, THE UNITED STATES IS THE WORST PLACE IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This message brought to you by BridgetSPK and OEPII1.
8/20/2007 6:18:14 PM
I've never suggested the US is the worst place in the world. I'm just wondering what the fuck Ytsejam expected from this thread. And don't lump me in with OEP. He and I are nothing alike.
8/20/2007 6:20:02 PM
As a gesture of goodwill, we should try some of the folks from Reagan's government for war crimes.
8/20/2007 6:26:44 PM
8/20/2007 6:33:43 PM
^So what do you want this thread to be about?Just a legacy to Eric Volz and how outraged we all are?Fine, let's get theDuke to delete this thread, and we'll start over with explicit instructions that only posts of outrage towards Nicaragua should be shared. Anything else will be intepreted as not "grown-up."Dumbass.

^Your characterization of me is all wrong. The fact that you're only responding to me when most everybody else is saying similar shit is telling, and it would be apparent to anybody who reads this board regularly what you're trying to do.You missed the irony in your own thread, and now you're embarassed. So you're coming after me, the weak-minded dumbass, trying to get me to say something stupid so you can come out on top of your lame ass thread. Why haven't you responded to guth, GoldenViper, moron, joe_schmoe, A Tanzarian, and RedGuard...they all broke your NO BAD TALK ABOUT THE US rule, too.[Edited on August 20, 2007 at 9:03 PM. Reason : I think you're a big a fat pussy. Not even a bitch...just a straight up pussy.]
8/20/2007 9:02:44 PM

If Volz is innocent, he should be freed, of course. Either way, it does sound as if he was mistreated. However, I don't like the idea of our government flexing its muscles against Nicaragua. We've done enough to that country in the past. If we try to push them around some more, I seriously doubt that'll improve things.
8/21/2007 12:41:47 PM
^^guth is always talking about the School of the Americas. And GoldenViper's point about the Reagan administration was obvious. The fact that you find it "halfway intelligent" is concerning, as all he did was share the truth about the fact that the Reagan administration was more than just "openly hostile" (as you put it) towards the Sandinista party. With Reagan's funding, the Contras raped, tortured, and slaughtered civilians--in some cases, per American training manuals.I mean, anybody with a passing knowledge of our involvement in that region would know that we should not go "flexing our muscles" there.
8/21/2007 2:15:42 PM
Nicaragua's economy also went to hell after the revolution, partially because of the Contras.Nicaraguans are considerably poorer now than they were in the 1970s. According to the Penn World Tables, Nicaraguan GDP per capita is back to 1950s levels now.
8/21/2007 2:35:28 PM
I always figured illegal immigration was sorta our punishment for undermining numerous economies in Central and South America. But cheap labor doesn't seem like much of a punishment.
