I figured there might be a lot of people interested in this.

Best Friend Pet Adoption is hosting Pet Fest on Sat., Aug. 18 from 10AM to 4PM at Durham's Sutton Station. This event celebrates pets, pet owners and pet adoption. Our goal is to raise funds to support the medical expenses of our foster animals, provide information about Spay and Neuter options, and to provide the Triangle community a fun-filled day of activities for animals and their people !!
We will have an ongoing rabies and microchip clinic as part of Pet Fest. Dogs and cats are required by North Carolina law to have a rabies vaccine at four months of age. Microchipping assists with speedy recovery if your pet is lost or injured, and gives you an added sense of security if your pet slips its collar -- the microchip is always present.

Rabies shots are $5, cash only. Written proof of prior 1-year vaccination is required for 3-year shots.
Microchips are $20, cash or check only.
(usually costs $75-$100 at a vet)
All cats must be in carriers, all dogs on leashes.
Dr. Regina Sanders, Purr and Bark Veterinary Mobile Doctor, will administer the rabies vaccines and microchip implants.

Aww, crap! I was out of town.

Love BFPA, though. I got my kitty Chloe from them about 3 weeks ago. Very friendly people!

Do most vets really charge up to $100 for microchips? If so the vet clinic I work at is losing money charging less than half of that.

Which brand microchip? Home again has always been reliable, but they recently changed from a one time fee, to a pay every year over and over fee system I believe.

I always got the impression that microchipping is cheaper than that also. I'm gonna call my vet and see about that, because Grits needs a chip soon!

shrug.
I know I paid around $80 for 2 of my dogs to be chipped at the vet while they were being neutered. Granted this was 2-3 years ago and maybe prices have gone done. I had my other 2 dogs chipped at clinics where it cost me $20.
If you had your dog/cat chipped at a vet you'd also have to pay a vet visit fee so add an additional $30+ onto that.

I doubt you can find a vet who will do it for $20 though.

The one in Benson in Sept is only $10 for microchipping. You certainly can't beat that.

I'm assuming homeagain chips are used at these clinics. They're the most widely used and I 've never heard of problems with them (unlike the banfield ones).

My dogs are all registered with HomeAgain and CAR (Companion Animal Recovery). So far I've only paid for the registration fee once. I'll check online to see if i need to pay again.
