trying to build a couple of simple websites and need some recommendations on good scripts

#1 need a classifieds script
- something with simple usability, good design, but powerful
- e.g. cars.com (with sortable headers)
- i've looked at stuff like geodesic, esvon, phpclassifieds

#2 need social networking package
- has built-in modules for news/articles, forums/blogs, calendar, photos, directory
- e.g. tmz.com, prefixmag.com, and I've seen many more that have the same structure/functionality
- i've looked at joomla

both need to be easily customizable....thanks

#1 no matter what you pick is going to take a shitload of work to achieve: simple usability, good design, but powerful

Just use facebook as your social networking platform, and add whatever you want on top

Creating a new social network from scratch these days is a waste of time, as people hate signing up for new services...

The Facebook api is pretty solid and easy to setup.

most have, or at some point will ... They have to either register for facebook or for your site ... and those who already have facebook can simply log in to your site using facebook if you build that into your site.

Thats what I recommend doing, as no one needs a 10000000th social networking profile.
