The Chargers should be one of the top teams in the league once again this year. The team that went 14-2 is still intact, but this year they'll have to deal with a tougher schedule, higher expectations and a new coaching staff. With the best RB, TE and arguably the best FB and OL in the league, the offense should once again be dominant. I'll be surprised if they don't lead the league in scoring again this year. Rivers should benefit from Norv calling the plays and the addition of Craig Davis at WR. Some analysts seem to think that Rivers' weakness is handling the blitz, based on his decline in numbers late in the year against blitzing defenses. We know from his days at NC State just how effective he can be at picking apart a blitz. I'm expecting him to be better than last year, although he might not be a Pro-Bowler due to Manning/Brady/Palmer. The defensive front 7 is one of the best in the league, with young stars Merriman, Phillips and Castillo only getting better. Once again the question is the secondary, although Jammer and Florence played pretty solid last year. McCree is one of the starters at safety; is rookie Eric Weddle ready to start opposite him? The loss of coordinator Wade Phillips might hurt, but replacement Ted Cotrell is a Phillips disciple. One big question will be whether Norv can get the team motivated week in and week out. The knock on Norv is that he's a great coordinator but not a leader. The team is known for having great team leaders like LT, Lo Neal and Rivers, do they need a disciplanarian coach on their ass every week? Marty was very good at keeping the team focused in the regular season, but the team lost that focus in the playoffs. I'm expecting the opposite this year. I think they struggle with injuries, inconsistency and a tough schedule and win only 10 or 11 games this year. Much like the Colts last year and the Steelers the year before, I think they pull it together in time for the playoffs and end up making a run for the Superbowl. San Diego Chargers: Super Bowl XLII Champions!

^I'm not even a Chargers fan, but since you said "arguably" when talking about Neal, there's really nothing I can dispute. Quality post. I feel the same way about the team slipping to 10-11 wins, but I can't overlook how terrible Norv has been as HC in the past, so I don't think they make that Super Bowl run.

all their losses (reg + post-season) last year combined honly ad a single digit point margin. there's something the Charger's ownership knows about the mediocre hire they made to replace Marty, that we don't.

i have a question for all you "chargers fans"?is the bandwagon strong enough to hold you all?
8/12/2007 1:36:21 PM
i think rivers coming to the team is a legitimate reason to pull for a team.
8/12/2007 1:50:38 PM
how is it possible to not like the PR/LT combo?

so all the other State players are worthless?of course, i root for every state player to do well in the nfl, but i am not disloyal enough to trash my favorite team that quickly.besides, if i just rooted for the best state players, i would have to be a Rams/Cardinals/Chargers/Seahawks/49ers/Jets fan and that would just be tough.(besides you always hate to bring race into a discussion but its interesting that all the black players in the nfl combined pull less love than the one white player)
8/12/2007 2:35:25 PM
it's the quarterback, the guy who touches the ball every playIf I wasn't already a fan of an NFL team, I would be a fan of the Chargers too, because that's where my favorite college QB playsAnd it has nothing to do with race. TA touched the ball a lot too when he was healthy, and I am a diehard Bo*jangles fan[Edited on August 12, 2007 at 2:42 PM. Reason : t]

i forgot LT doesnt play preseason [Edited on August 12, 2007 at 8:24 PM. Reason : asdf]

So, did anyone not know that they were going to give it to Lorenzo Neal? That short yardage play worked every time last year...
8/12/2007 8:28:22 PM
^^^ Wasn't jammer's fault entirely. Marlon Mcree (former panther) their safety was totally off and confused, didnt know where the ball was. He should have been there on an inside route in the middle like that....safety's responsibility on inside cuts.

Challenges, timeouts...jesus, people, it's the fucking preseason
8/12/2007 9:16:03 PM
That's a little "w00t" right there.
8/12/2007 9:18:18 PM
Still worried about the receiving corps...
8/13/2007 1:59:14 AM
I think the recievers will be fine. Malcom Floyd is the real deal. Craig Davis was smooth and Legadu Nannee looked a lot like Anquan Boldin out there. The O-Line looked like shit. For a unit that's supposed to be one of the best in the league, that was downright embarrassing. The defense looked a lot different than last year. Not many blitzes at all. I doubt the Chargers lead the NFL in sacks again this year. I prefer an attacking D, but with lots of guys in coverage you're gonna get more interceptions. The safety they drafted, Eric Weddle, looks pretty good.

I am pretty worried about the Chargers after Marty left. I can't believe you get rid of a guy who went 14-2. And to top it off, you hire Norv Turner? It reminds me of what Nebraska did a few years ago in football.
8/13/2007 11:45:10 AM
Craig Davis did look good. He's a rookie, but hopefully he'll be more reliable than Eric Parker. Other than that, the receiving corps is basically the same. Nannee could be a good pickup, it's just hard to tell how receivers will do when they are in there with the third string. Hankton and Gaines have had a lot of great preseason performances over the years... Floyd and Jackson were unimpressive.I hope Darren Sproles can stay healthy. He looked pretty sharp.
8/13/2007 11:48:58 AM
i love rivers but if it was the Chargers and Panthers in the Superbowl fuck rivers

They might not have the roster space. This is a deep team. Also, Michael Turner was better at kick returns last year than Sproles was 2 years ago. Ditto for Eric Parker on punt returns. Sproles fumbled 3 punts as a rookie. he has to show that he can hold on to the ball.

haha, is PR calling the plays?
8/18/2007 10:40:08 PM
Good performance all-around for the Chargers tonight. Only area that really looked weak was the secondary, but the Rams have a pretty strong passing attack.
8/18/2007 11:09:28 PM
I was stuck with the Deadskins game instead, maybe I can find the Chargers game on NFL network tomorrow.
