Potentially, possibly, rumors are for a "radically redesigned iMac" debuting tomorrow/today (August 7). Discuss. [/apple geekery]

apple store's down
8/7/2007 12:46:52 PM
I'm excited + I don't even know why
8/7/2007 12:51:08 PM
^ same.I don't even like Macs, or iPods, or anything. I guess I'm just interested in Techie News.
8/7/2007 1:03:29 PM
word from the conf. is new iMacs indeed
8/7/2007 1:07:55 PM
already talking about macs and how much better they are than dells 20 and 24" lcds - easy to upgrade... not a bad design ]

8/7/2007 1:12:56 PM
i like the design... almost started trying to justify the purchase of another computer.Good job, mr. jobs... good job
8/7/2007 1:16:28 PM
design looks good. i don't like it b/c it's an AIO solution, but for all those who don't fix or upgrade their own computer it looks to be a solid solution, esp. nice w/ the C2D & screen upgrade
8/7/2007 1:21:47 PM
I just bought mine last year, so unfortunately I'll have to wait a bit
8/7/2007 1:24:38 PM
yeah i meant to put easy to upgrade RAM but nothing else...
8/7/2007 1:25:51 PM
OOOH THEY ADDED 'EVENTS' to iLife!!!! OOOOH.Didn' someone already invent that and call it 'folders'??
8/7/2007 1:26:54 PM
they're probably talking solely about the ability to add a DIMM by "only removing 1 screw".^^ that's what i get for clicking reply and then walking away for a couple of minutes before posting the message[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 1:31 PM. Reason : *]
8/7/2007 1:31:01 PM
seriously though... not that i'm expecting them today or anything, but....where the fuck are the new iPods?
8/7/2007 1:36:37 PM
the invitation to the attendees said "absolutely no iPod or iPhone news"
8/7/2007 2:09:42 PM
i always have, and always will, hate all-in-one units...i realize macs are geared towards people who are NOT tech savvy (but still require performance) and who are scared of the thought of opening up their computer, but limiting oneself to being stuck with the thing for the sake of having a screen integrated into the CPU, and largely with non-standard components, is just stupid

finally, "Numbers", the spreadsheet to go along with Keynote and Pages. I highly doubt it's an "Excel killer", especially for business uses, but probably more than sufficient for most people.iWork 08 for $79..... that's pretty damned good for an Office-like productivity suite[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 2:25 PM. Reason : .]

Numbers looks really nice.....http://www.apple.com/iwork/numbers/i really like the feature to put multiple Tables inside one worksheet, each with its own grid and separate formatting. Oh how I wish Excel did this, instead of changing column and row sizes, merging cells, using multiple worksheets for data that should stay on a single sheet. and i love the idea of having the worksheets listed on the left in tree-view style, instead of the f'ing tabs at the bottom like Excel. The tabs are practically unusable if you have more than 8-10 of them, especially if you want them to have descriptive names[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 2:50 PM. Reason : .]

OK, not as radical as revisions in the past (to Flat Panel; to behind the screen) but still looks good to me.
8/7/2007 3:41:06 PM
Also, new keyboard. It's probably more impressive once you can put hands on it.
8/7/2007 3:43:01 PM
i just had a macgasm
8/7/2007 3:44:39 PM
They keyboard is just like the ones on the newer MacBooks. They look a bit funny and flat, but I'm a really big fan of them. They have a great feel and feedback.

Apple is really taking AJAX to the next level, by making it functional and look very good. Here is a sample .Mac Web Gallery created from iPhoto '08http://gallery.mac.com/emily_parkerEverything is AJAX except for the Carousel view (Flash) - http://daringfireball.net/linked/2007/august#tue-07-ex_web_galleryif you didn't notice before, the most recent Apple.com redesign is heavily AJAX enabled. Try the search feature at the upper right (search for ipod or something) - http://www.apple.com/you could almost say it works better than Spotlight does!
8/7/2007 6:10:56 PM
8/7/2007 6:27:22 PM
show me an AJAX application that is as functional and looks as good as the Web Galleryedit - ok, maybe not a "whole new level", since I'm sure you'll find something. But at the least, Apple is showing that they're committed to making very nice looking and functional webapps/pages[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 6:38 PM. Reason : .]

wow, WTF did they do with the new wireless keyboard. the one on top is the wired, on bottom is the bluetooththey really crippled the wireless one.... like they're encouraging people not to buy it. Or maybe they're trying to push that one to laptop users (very small, easy to carry) and the wired to desktop users, but a lot of people like wireless on their desktops too...
8/7/2007 6:45:14 PM
joe - I'm betting the wireless is more focused to the livingroom media type machines where a keyboard of that size makes a lot of sense. Pretty much everything to the right of "Enter" is used <0.01% by the vast majority of people anyway so it's pretty much wasted space for them. The thing I'd hate about it are the arrow keys eh also I'm not really sure how i feel about 89235 cords going into the back of the monitor.I've never been a fan of the USB hub in monitor thing. you seriously think grandma is using the keypad?I'm a software engineer, a Linux hacker and I use keyboard shortcuts for everything possible and I guarantee you that if I tallied my keystrokes the keys to the right of enter would represent less than 0.5% of my total keystrokes.
8/7/2007 7:40:18 PM
8/7/2007 8:18:41 PM
I use the keypad all the time because I used to work retail and number entry is so much faster that way for me.
8/7/2007 8:36:33 PM
not if I'm using python

8/7/2007 9:27:44 PM
I'm skeptical of the ajax claims until i see the API[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 10:14 PM. Reason : and until it works seamlessly across browsers]
8/7/2007 10:14:00 PM
it uses SproutIt and Scriptalicious as frameworkshttp://www.sproutit.com/2007/8/7/introducing-the-new-mac-galleryhttp://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/07/new-mac-galleries-based-on-open-source-framework/
8/7/2007 10:54:44 PM
if its using scriptaculous then its using prototypeJS as the underlying framework.which is kind of funny, because prototype isn't DOM compliant. I LOVE prototype, but I'm REALLY suprised to hear that any big company is relying on that.Google's libraries are so damn much better, but such a bitchfest of an initial learning curve compared to prototype and scriptaculous.
8/7/2007 11:06:21 PM
just noticed that the wireless keyboard looks EXACTLY like the keyboard on my macbook pro
8/8/2007 1:01:07 AM
Makes my original 17" flat-panel iMac look decidely unsexy...I might have to squeeze the money out of somewhere. ]
8/8/2007 1:02:53 AM
$1200 for a PC and 20" monitor? Just a week or two ago you could get a Dell with the 24" LCD for under $600. I just don't understand the iMac appeal. I mean I can at least see the point in the Mac Pros and MacBooks. This just seems like an expensive way of saying "I REALLY LIKE APPLE!!1"
8/8/2007 3:11:35 AM
the Jay Leno chin still ruins the sex appeal of these thingsick
8/8/2007 6:45:07 AM
yeah, i would have preferred they got rid of the chin and made it a little bit thicker. i think that's where they store the power supply, so you don't have an external brick

^^^ As someone who is quite possibly going to buy his third iMac, I'll try to describe it.I want something that works, period. No matter what I do, I want it to work. I'm not going to play any graphic-intensive games or edit a full-length feature film, but I want it to work under any and all circumstances.I've had my current iMac since the day the 17"ers arrived at Southpoint in 2002, and it's crashed a grand total of once, about 18 months ago. Everything works. When I plug in my camera, it fires up iPhoto and downloads the images because that's what I've set it to do. My dad has a Dell that's set to do the same thing, but when he plugged in his camera the other day, it decided that it no longer recognized JPEGs. Awesome.Sure, Apples are much more expensive than a comparable PC. However, I'm willing to pay a premium for simplicity and functionality. Maybe I overpaid by $350 back in '02 based on system specs, but for my money, I've saved that much in time and headaches since then.
