good question. I'd guess they WOULDN'T, because I honestly think the main thing they don't like is the riaa/mpaa catching you using the school's network, plus using their bandwidth for illegal purposes. If you have your own computer with your own illegal files on your own hard drive,1.) how would they catch you?2.) if they did, would they really go through the trouble? Now, whether they CAN, probably. They can get you for about anything if you're a student on campus.

NC State won't be the entity prosecuting you, it will be any company or organization that thinks they can prove that you were sharing illegal copies of their intellectual property. The university's obligation is to make you aware that we've received complaints. If you're a repeat or egregious offender, the university may take action against you as well, depending on the situation and severity. To answer the original question, it doesn't matter when or where you got the file sharing program. If it's used while your computer is connected to the NC State network, chances are pretty good that someone's going to notice sooner or later. If the program is simply ON your computer, but you're not using it, then there's not a problem. We're not in the business of policing what's on your computer. That said, and considering that NC State received the most copyright complaints from the RIAA and MPAA earlier this year, it's probably a good idea if you were to refrain from using the program if you intend to share music with it.[Edited on August 1, 2007 at 10:06 PM. don't forget that UPLOADING is against the rules, too - so if you're not downloading but that shit's running in the background, you're still breaking rules
8/2/2007 12:43:40 PM
how can music run in the background if your not playing it? How would I make sure the music I downloaded doesn't run in the background?
8/2/2007 12:49:41 PM
gremlins that live in your computer play music when they have parties.
8/2/2007 12:51:09 PM
Naw soberfan46an3 , the gremlins are partying inside your head because their is plenty of empty space in your head for them to lie down after they passed out due to alcohol poisoning
8/2/2007 12:57:36 PM
oh manno, I mean whatever file sharing program you downloaded before you came to school. If it's running in the background, it could be uploading the files you were sharing on it. Just make sure it's not running.

nc state/riaa/mpaa wont do anything about what is on your computer unless you are openly distributing it. basically you wont get caught ever if you are downloading files and not sharing them. its still illegal but theres no easy way for them to catch you downloading.
