im all for hating unc, but we only sold out 3 games this basketball season with a new coach and everyone excited that herb was gone, so its not like we are any better.

Football is much different than basketball. If we only played 6 basketball games a year in Raleigh, they would sell out.

also is 3 really the only # that were sold out? or is that just the # that all the seats were filled? cause i could've sworn there were more than 3 games i went to last year where they claimed to have "sold out". maybe they only really count it as sold out if alumni show up to sit in the seats they pay for.

i realize that, but our basketball arena is also roughly a third the size of our football stadium.

i know im not going to convince anyone, but im just dissappointed that for all we talk, we rarely back up our claims with actions.

Not correct. We sold out the majority of our schedule. The RBC Center reports attendance, not just sales (which is what most schools report). We only had 3 games with sellout attendance, which is pretty typical.

We averaged 14,000 in attendance which puts us at 18th in the country. We haven't been out of the top 20 since we opened the RBC Center.

Its much easier to attend a game on a Saturday afternoon than it is 7pm on a Tuesday. You simply don't get travelling attendance unless it is a huge game or the fans happen to be excessively active.

ive been looking around for information about the attendance/ticket sales thing. we had this discussion a while ago and someone showed somewhere that the attendance reported in box scores is actually ticket sales, not how many people walk through the gate.

i can't seem to find anything right now showing either side though.

^however, basketball games only last 2 hours, so its not the same time commitment as going to a football game.

Not a potent argument. A lot of fans groan at the thought of simultaneously fighting rush hour traffic whilst changing clothes in the car while trying to figure out how to deal w/ the kids for the night on a weeknight. Weekends are infinitely easier for most ppl to make. There's a huge time committment outside of those 2 hours when you take traffic into account.

^^ I think that the argument he is trying to make is that people can travel a couple hours or more for football games on saturdays, but can't do for bball games on a workday. Not necessarily the duration of the event, but the day of the event and the time it takes to travel to the event.

The 2 hours vs. 3 1/2 hours is a pretty irrelevant consideration for most people. The 3 1/2 hours of the game on a Saturday is a pretty small part of the equation when I'm driving 4+ hours (not to mention tailgating for 4 or 5). You are dealing with 7 home games, all on Saturdays vs. considerably more on any night of the week. You end up with a different crowd, and it's apples and oranges.

Also, by far the biggest culprit on lower attendance for "minor" games in basketball is the high number of these held as corporate LSRs. The fact that these tend to be the best seats makes it even worse. Most of our games actually are sold out, and the upper deck is often fuller than the lower deck. If the RBC nazis relaxed restrictions on moving down into empty seats a few minutes into the game, you would at least see our arena look fuller. Heck, I've been at Wake games where the PA announcer invited people to move down.

Anyone have a link to attendance per game numbers?

Attendance is reported as tickets sold/distributed, not actual gate figures. This is standard procedure in all sports, both profressional and collegiate. If they counted gate figures, no team would ever hit 100%.

^^You are seriously misinformed if you think there is any "standard procedure" for reported attendance. Some schools/teams report gate figures, while some (notably UNC) even use "visual estimates".

^The procedure to do this involves letting people move down after the X minute mark. That's all there is to it. If someone has tickets to a seat and is gone to the bathroom, they obviously get their seat back. If they have any social skills whatsoever, they will inform the person that is their seat. If they are passive aggressive/wimpy/unable to communicate with others, they will ask the usher, who hopefully won't be a douchebag in directing the people to other seats. This works at most events not staffed by the Gale Force/Event One types.

I've been interested in the business end of sports for a while, and have never encountered a team that intentionally understates their attendance by giving the gate numbers. Why would they want to make their attendance look lower, and if they do indeed do this, how could we possibly have had 100% attendance for 3 games?

EDIT: Okay, I am reading that the NCAA will allow tickets sold or actual attendance as reporting methods. It still comes as a surprise to me that a team would choose to do this, and I don't understand why.

ok, here's what you do. since they scan all the tickets, they have to have a computer system that knows which tickets have been scanned and which haven't. you make a quick print for the unsold seats and have tents in the concourse where during halftime you can trade in your upperdeck ticket for a new one. if you have a lower level ticket but don't come in until after halftime, then you have to find a seat in the upper deck. perfect.
