http://raleigh.craigslist.org/car/382035495.htmlSays the carb is "wore out" I mean its mechanical, carb overhaul is 1 thing, but how do you physically break anything other than springs or seals in a carb? I'm serious... and just asking a simple question about failure modes...

the bushings (or the housing) that the spindles for the throttle plate and choke plate go through can wear, causing a big vacuum leak. Either insert new bushings, or buy a new carb. its not unheard of. Also, if its plastic, they warp, and then need to replaced.I would say the question is why are you looking at such a fugly van, not how is the carb worn out.
