I am taking a 10-week summer course online and have not really done much work due to a busy schedule. I thought I had dropped it but it did not go through so now I am in a position to either just take an F and redo next semester or work my @$$ off the next couple of weeks to get at least a D. Should I take the F and get an A next semester (not a real hard course but I have a lot of work to catch up and not a lot of freetime to do so) or should I try to at least pass? I have a 3.248 GPA and it works out about the same if I do either as far as GPA goes but how much will future employers and/or Masters program count against me for that F? Any help......[Edited on July 20, 2007 at 12:29 PM. Reason : ]

If you're willing to take it next semester I don't see why you wouldn't drop it and take it next semester to spare you from getting an F or having to do work that you don't have time to do.

do the work. shitty as it is, a D is better than an F.

If the same prof is teaching it in the fall, an option might be to explain your situation and ask if you can get an incomplete, then audit the class in the fall and have the work apply to the summer class. Even if that isn't an option, definitely discuss with the prof why you haven't been doing the work, and they may be willing to work with you on a grade based on the final exam or something else along those lines that show you know the material. As someone who retook several classes due to not doing the work the first time around, just buckle down and do what it takes to get a low passing grade.

was this the only course you were taking over the summer. If so, you were supposed to withdrawal from the semester rather than dropping the course.

So getting a F then an A next semester would not look better on my tracnscript than a D for the course? I was just thinking in terms of that since they weigh about the same on GPA. I am not sure if the audit thing would work because I'm not sure if I can audit this course with my major.

can you not repeat if you get a D? if not, then I suppose taking the F this time and retaking it would be better, if you're certain you'll do well in it next time.

it stays on your transcript and since you are junior, you can repeat the course but they will just average the two together....I dont think you can do the repeat thing and get it replaced since you are not a freshman....did you transfer here?[Edited on July 21, 2007 at 10:36 AM. Reason : grad schools do look at that]

Yeah, I didn't read everything carefully, but I'm pretty sure someone mentioned talking to the professor. Before you plan to receive an F at all, your first move is to talk to the professor. Most professors really do want to help you out, and they'll work with you as long as you weren't just being lazy and now you're freaking out about it. Talk to the professor first and go from there.

get an incomplete, then you will have to the end of the fall to complete the work.

not all professors are going to be willing to give you an incomplete. For example, I wouldn't. You know your limitations going into the class, do the work or drop it when your supposed to. Its pretty simple. That said, you can likely still drop if you tell your sob story to the appropriate deans office and/or get your advisor to help with the drop. I have students magically drop past the drop date w/o me signing anything about every other semester.

Wait, wait..Everything changes if you ACTUALLY dropped it but due to a system error, you remained in the course. That's 100% not your fault. If you can somehow show that you actually dropped but a human/computer dropped the ball, you should be able to drop now without any consequences.
