My 2 year contract with Sprint is up. I'd like to upgrade my phone from the dinky one I have now.
A slimmer flip phone is nice. Or go all out and try one of those PDA ones. At a minimal, playing songs and taking pictures is a must.

Here's what I have to choose from:
http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhones

And here's the ones I'm thinking of:
Razr or Krzr
Upstage
MotoQ
Blackberry
Treo
Smart Devices PPC6700

Even after rebate and all, some are still pricey. Has anyone had success getting more through the retention department?

be sure to use SERO if you just have an account by yourself - sprint.howardforums.com for details - read up on it if you aren't familiar with it - through SERO you can get much better deals on phones

what is your top $$ amount

I did a good bit of research on most of those phones, I'll tell you what people have said in general:

Razr/Krzr- good phone, good battery life, big bright screen, although they feel a bit awkward to hold during a conversation because they are so skinny, if you're looking for an all around good multimedia phone and you don't care to let your phone be your dayplanner and lifeline, go with one of these phones, Razr if you like the flip, Krzr if you don't like the flip

Upstage- not familiar with

MotoQ- simply put, don't get this phone

Blackberry- very popular, expensive, a bit bulky, good for checking emails on the go, I don't like the interface too much but that's just a personal preference, a lot of people love it

Treo- my favorite phone out of the bunch, very easy to use, practical, very long battery life, decent camera/camcorder, I love the calendar and memo pad, I basically live by this phone, I had the 650 and upgraded to the 700p when that came out, and now the 750 just came out. It will cost you a pretty penny but you will find that it is priceless. Ebay is your best bet for getting the lowest price. I signed up a new Sprint account at Best Buy and they gave me a Krzr for $30 which I sold on Ebay for $250 and bought a Treo on Ebay brand new for $375

I have a Samsung A900 and it's freakin sweet. They have a newer A910 out I believe, with expandable Micro-SD card memory. Both play MP3's. My A900 is slightly smaller than a Razr.

Absolutely love my phone.

but i'm almost leaning towards getting a PDA type phone.....

what's wrong with the MotoQ?
and what's the difference between the Treo 755p, Treo 700p, and Treo 700wx

755p is the upgrade to the 700p - 700w is the same as the 700p except it runs windows mobile 5 instead of palmOS

My experience with windows Pocket PC is that it is VERY CUMBERSOME TO USE and FREEZES UP ALL THE TIME.

I have tried the palm os, windows mobile, windows pocket pc, and blackberry OS's and honestly the Blackberry smokes them all as far as dependability and ease of use.

Windows is easy to get the hang of but thats only because you are already familiar with the layout... . a cell phone should not have a start button. Also on my GF's Treo 700wx there is no way to add a contact from the recent calls list. That kills it for me. How is something supposed to keep you organized when you cannot even add a contact in a few steps?

If you just want a phone for fun like watching videos, mp3's, texting, and such a MOTO Q is probably a good option. If you need something for business, e-mail and an organizer look at the blackberries.

hrmm i can add a new contact from my recent calls list - i do have wm6 though instead of wm5 but i have to imagine wm5 can do it too

on the screen you click menu - then save to contacts

most of the people that use a WM though for much more than a phone rarely use the start menu i think and rely on customizing their Today screen - i rarely use the start menu for day to day tasks - it's usually just for something that i need to do that is out of the ordinary

^^ yeah that's what i have - great pocket pc phone - the only real downside is the one handed typing that you can pretty easily do with the treo isn't quite as easy - but it's a rare occasion when that becomes an issue for me so far

755p is the upgrade to the 700p?
that's odd b/c the 755p is cheaper than the 700p on the sprint phone page

windows mobile 5 vs. palmOS, what do majority prefer?

yeah the sprint page has the Mogul listed as well...no idea what it is

the PPC-6700 is $100 after rebate..

sorry to be clueless, but what's the difference between the PPCs like Mogul vs the Treos/Blackberrys

the 755p came out almost a year later than the 700p i though - but the reason for the price difference is because the 700wx is the latest windows mobile version of the treo the and 755p is the latest palmOS version - the 755p is newer but the 700wx is the latest equivalent to come out for the treo

if you don't know the difference - don't buy either - it'd be a waste of money - look at normal phones and ignore the pda phones

so..........

what's the difference between PPCs like Mogul vs the Treos/Blackberrys...they seem to be the same except the PPCs hide the keyboard underneath

and Windows Mobile vs. Palm OS, which is preferred by the majority

The keyboard underneath is a horrible design.

Well I guess if you are a faggot like the guy a few posts up and think its cooler cuz all of your friends at work have it you probably don't ever use the phone part and just think its neat that you can turn it sideways and make the screen wider too browse teh internetz.

For those that actually use the phone for talking to people not just browsing the web, keyboard under is the shittiest design ever. I will openly admit you can type faster on it for sending emails and texting, but what about when you are driving down 440 and miss a phone call, trying to call the person right back either requires turning the phone and getting to the keyboard or pulling out the stylus and going to your missed call log. If you are trying to do that shit I dont want to share the road with you.

At least on the treos you can dial while driving because the keyboard is easy to get to and the numbers are clearly marked.

Oh wow I bought it on peer pressure?!? Then I went out and immediately got an iPhone cause all my friends are getting that and I have to be cool with them.

Go fuck yourself. Work bought it, but I found it cheaper online than they could get it, so they let me have the difference. And for your information to redial a missed number all you have to do is hit the left soft button twice and hit send. Its not some fucking conundrum like you claim to make a call, and if its that difficult for you to figure out, maybe you shouldn't be operating something more complex, like a vehicle.

^^^ the differences are mainly personal choices - there is no one clear winner overall

^^ it's pretty clear that you don't know how to use the phone from previous posts it sounds like you've used your gf's phone a few times and never owned one even though you do say you've tried them all - they all have pluses and minuses

if you have to turn the phone sideways to make a phone call then you are definitely doing something wrong - the one thing the treo does excel at is one-handed dialing on the keyboard though - the point of the touchscreen is that you don't have to use the keyboard...the buttons on the touchscreen are much much larger than the ones on the keyboard

this image is an example of what comes up when you push the green phone button...then you push 1 more button for the complete call history...

or you push the phone icon with the exclamation point from the main screen to show the call history

or you push the notification button on the main screen when you miss a phone call to call the person back

ok i've narrowed down my decision to either the Mogul or the Treo 700 (don't know wx or p version)...but then I just read about the Treo 800 coming out soon....hmmm

I'm gonna hit the sprint store to see if I like the hideable keyboard on the Mogul. I'm either gonna love it or hate it.

And what is this SERO stuff I need to look into.

I have a Moto Q and love the thing, When I was looking I just thought it had a better feel than the other smartphones.

I def. think it has the best keypad, nice big screen, and I finally got my Nintendo Emulator running (but you can do that on all the Windows Mobile phones, but still RBI baseball anywhere ROCKS)

sero sprint employee referral offer.

really cheap phones and plans they offer to people that know a sprint emp. But if you're out of contract you can often get these prices if you agree to stay with them for another two years. Costs them more to sign up someone new than to retain their old customers.

go with
MotoQ
Treo
or
Smart Devices PPC6700 (star com by the way)

the upstage is shit, the krzr is shit, blackberry is only better than the other smart phones if you have a blackberry system at work (though I haven't had my hands on the pearl) and only the red razr has a 1.3 megapixel camera (I work at a cell phone kiosk)

but of those three if you like texting go with the star com PPC6700 (if I didn't have to pay retail because of my employee plan I'd get it)

I'm leaning real heavily on the Sanyo M1... I really need a phone that can double as an mp3 player.

I hated the razr after getting two in 3 weeks and trading in for another phone that would be functional, everyone I know who's had it also hates it

I havent heard much good about the Upstage

MotoQ sucks ass

I wish Sprint had the blackberry pearl, my boyfriend is thinking of getting the blackberry 8830 (sprint) he's looking for a powerhouse for emailing/interneting, bt, and GPS and battery life is supposed to be really good.

His mom has the treo 650 (sprint) and she just loves it, it has no camera, but she loves the palm os

My boyfriend's last job gave him a PPC6700 and he loved it for what he used it for. Emailing, the apps he used, that all sufficed. Battery life sucked, bt locked up the phone when he used it as a modem, and it had no GPS.

Hope that helps. If I decide on the M1 I'll come back and review it for you.

My boyfriend recently bought the a900. It has some good features but seems to lack a few things that my d807 has. I don't know if it's because mine is cingular/att and his is sprint or if it's just the models but they're very similar. He seems to have problems talking on it because of sound quality. Otherwise it's a good phone.

ok so i went to the sprint store today to play around with the Mogul, Treo 700wx, and Treo 755p these are my impressions being the first time i've ever played with PDA type phones

The Treos seem well built. Only problem I had were the keys seemed kind of small and hard to type on using two hands, I would accidentally press other keys. The Palm OS on the 755p reminded me of my first Palm PDA back 7 years ago, the contact/calender/todos didn't seem to change much. I didn't like the look of the apps back then so I still have issue with palm os now. Then I played with the wm5 on the 700wx. The resolution seemed bad but I'm used to the windows look.

Then they just got in a Mogul and I tried that. It's got a slightly longer screen, and slideout keyboard. The keyboard looks cool, buttons are square and larger. Much easier to type two handed. Also the screen auto adjusts to landscape, seemed easier to view the web and take pictures. The resolution was great. WM6 seemed really cool and fluid. The rep said the Mogul was the only one with built-in WiFi. He did mention a memory load problem, in that all the apps stay open (minimized) in the background, so you have to manually go in and close them. I asked about the quality of the company that makes them (HTC/Audiovox) and it seemed mediocre.

My only concern is the build quality and if slideout keyboard is more suspectible to damage. But right now I'm definitely leaning towards the Mogul.

So what's the best way to get the best deal on these phones. My 2 year contract is up, and I've been with Sprint for 8 years. These phones all run about $299 after rebate and instant savings whether SERO or not. What I hate is that the instant savings is the same whether you are a new customer or existing customer upgrading. I've always hated that they don't give existing customers better deals than new ones. Should I try the retention route?

So for best deal on phone should I:
1. get another one that's free off Sprint and sell on ebay, use money to buy Treo/Mogul
2. try to swindle a deal through Retention or SERO
3. suck it up and pay the $299 after rebate

also since I would need data for the first time (I think he said $15/month) should I not break my current family plan and try to get the same SERO deal through retention?

anyone work for Sprint?
Help!

you should be able to just pay 288 through sero and not have to deal with retention or anything like that - read the first reply in this thread for how to find out more info on sero - you don't need to know anyone that works for sprint...

since the mogul is htc's 2nd version of the phone the build quality shouldn't be that big of a concern - even the 6700 wasn't built horribly

i've had the mogul for a few weeks now and have been pretty happy with it so far - i do recommend reading some forums like ppcgeeks.com or sprint.howardforums.com for how to "upgrade"/tweak a few things to make it run better/faster and look a lot better - the new htc touch today screens are a lot better than the standard wm6 screens

for the plan - you should either pay the $15 for the data plan and stay on your family plan or just get a sero plan - you should be able to do some simple math to figure out which is more beneficial cost wise

no idea on the $99 deal on ebay - but i'd imagine there is a large catch or it's a scam
