sherriff's officefew minutes to fill out the paperworkweek or so to get the permitdepends a lot on personal preference (revolver vs auto, caliber, size, brand)http://www.PDHSC.com

reliable, econimical, packs a punch = shotgun at walmart. no permit required.

http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=shooting+ranges+in+raleigh+nc&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8there are a few of the shooting ranges. Permits take a couple of days for the background check and you have to go to your counties sheriff's office. As far as what to buy....Handgun or rifle?Price range?
7/11/2007 3:45:54 PM
no price rangehand gun... something not over the top.But a nice gun thats easy to handle and packs a punch

my god...did you use the freaking search?:
7/11/2007 4:34:43 PM
Onenighter you really need to be more descriptive in what you want the gun for.A Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 480Ruger is easy for me to handle and would pack a big punch...I don't think that's what you want though...You want a range gun, a house gun, a concealed carry gun, a woods gun to go along with your rifle when hunting, a gun to bust caps in thugs?
7/11/2007 7:38:32 PM
You really need to go to a place like Davi's where you can handle all sorts of guns, shoot the ones you think you like, and then get one that suits you. I'm not saying buy from Davi's, but it'll give you a chance to see what you like, and what you don't like.^^^^ I like the M&Ps, but I've heard issues with their 9mms having FTE problems and I'm not sure how I feel about the jointed trigger. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if someone made a solid metal replacement. I'm still seriously considering getting one.I've got a J-frame .38 SPC Smith & Wesson revolver that I LOVE. Best $ / satisfaction ratio of any firearm I've ever purchased.[Edited on July 11, 2007 at 8:05 PM. Reason : .]

M&P mmmmmm I've never wanted a useless duty pistol so much (I have a Sig already). All of the problems have been fixed in the current production M&Ps. The biggest problem was defective frames didn't allow the mag catch to work properly resulting in mags that popped out when you didn't want them to pop out.The triggers are the best of any striker fired semi.Extremely short reset, nice and crisp (about like a well used P99). They're around the same pull weight of Glocks but they definately aren't mushy like a Glock.

I want a gun i could use for recreational shooting and one that can also be used to defend yourself from a home intruder/theft
7/12/2007 12:45:59 AM
If the M&P has indeed been fixed, and you're looking for a gun that you can comfortably plink with / defend yourself in the home, then the M&P, XD, Glock and Wilson Combat's ADP are good places to start looking.

I'd say the M&P is a good choice - all the ones I've held feel good in the hand and have a pretty natural feel. I think some of the new ones have interchangeable grips, so you can get one that fits you best. As far as chambering, I'm completely partial to the .40 S&W - it's got easily manageable recoil and can fit nicely in a double-stack mag, but still packs a hell of a punch for a compact cartridge. It's not too expensive either, and a damn good round for the money, IMO.http://tinyurl.com/ey877 - S&W M&P .40[Edited on July 12, 2007 at 2:38 PM. Reason : linky]

i agree that one of the best ways to decide is to go to a gunshop and personally handle some of the firearms...just cause i'm partial to Taurus PT145s and Springfield XDs doesnt mean somebody else isnt partial to Sigs or Glocksand then as far as caliber you want to find your own personal happy medium between stopping power, recoil and mag capacity (assuming semi auto)...I am partial to .45 but if you are "recoil sensitive" you might consider something smaller like a 9mm]
7/12/2007 2:41:07 PM
^^ Big issue with the .40 S&W is that it is loaded to about the max for its casing pressure. A bullet setback during feeding can cause a catastrophic malfunction. Also, muzzle flip / impulse can be a bit for a beginner. No doubt it is an effective round though.

Ruger .22 pistol--it's all you need. The ammo is cheap, it's fun to plink with, and you don't have to be concerned about a big kick. In addition, you should be able to become quite accurate with it, which should offset any concern about lack of knockdown power.
7/13/2007 1:39:03 AM
don't forget that you can go to ranges and usually they will have handguns that you can rent out for a few bucks. just have to use their ammo. this is a good way to get a feel for how a gun fires without making any commitment. never buy anything online unless you have held it first or are experienced and are well aware of what you are buying.
7/13/2007 8:18:42 AM
^^can't go wrong with a Ruger .22....I've got a MKII myself....but you CAN go BIGGER

^they still have the triangular/pointed sights? i personally didnt really care for those sights
7/13/2007 12:14:20 PM
yeah, they take some getting used to, but the tritium sights are 3-dot if you like that better and i'm sure you can get aftermarket sights that will fit

I finally got my hands on one of these babys.

thats just fucking bizzare. what is the $$ on those? The first thing I thought of when I saw that was a LeMat, which is a cap & ball pistol with a 9 shot cylinder over a ~16 ga shotgun.
7/13/2007 4:05:12 PM
^that bottom barrel might have a bit of recoil
7/13/2007 4:06:27 PM
I saw that thing on the History Channel and I was unaccountably excited, and wondered why none of these companies that make artillery handguns have brought this back.
7/13/2007 7:35:35 PM
Uberti makes (made?) a LeMat reproduction.
7/13/2007 7:42:43 PM
^^ closest thing is a pepper box oh and i love sigs and HK's. if you don't know guns, revolvers are best because if it's loaded and u pull the trigger it's gonna fire.
7/13/2007 7:48:59 PM
^^^they wouldnt be legal in the US i'd imagine as it would essentially be a sawed off shotgun

On another note, for anyone with a S&W J-frame or similar revolver, I highly recommend the DeSantis Nemesis. I've been looking for a good pocket holster for a while now and this is the first I've found that I like.http://www.desantisholster.com/n38.html

First off, does anyone recommend any particular grip tapes for an XD compact? That being said . . .
7/16/2007 9:26:37 PM
it wouldnt be fine motor skills, but nice try. fine skills typically involve finger and hand movement, not arm movement

Does anyone have a site with data or anything to back these things up? I'm interested in the ".357 is the best" argument, and also how the 5.7mm round performs as far as damage.

7/17/2007 4:09:21 PM
If you have to ask, you don't want 5.7mm
7/17/2007 4:09:31 PM
The 5.7 is a stupid handgun round. It does about as much damage as you can expect from a 22 mag...because that's what it essentially is.Handgun caliber arguments are stupid too.Get a 380ACP, 9x19mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, 38 Special, or 357 mag and learn to shoot it well. That's all you need to know.[Edited on July 17, 2007 at 4:17 PM.
